I think we all have to remember that these deals more than likely never come to fruition. We may have a better than normal chance, but that still puts us at less than 50%. |

No - just a gut feeling based on what I see and hear out there. _________________ "Why do you think bad things happen, anyway???" "So we have something good to look forward to."

This rumour has more positive spin on it than any I remember. Between Phil admitting something is being worked on, Kidd saying his days have been great in New Jersey and playing in LA would be great. Rod Thorn telling Kidd he is on the block. Vince Carter is also being shopped by Thorn, and Vecsey saying he thinks deal the will be done.
I'm not sure what negative stuff is brewing out there?

I may be willing to cross Emplay's 49% line in the sand, stick my neck out, and say 51%. Everything I've heard leading up to this, both in the media and out, has been pretty consistent with the most plausible scenario -- when they've been talking, when they've been at a standstill, when they've added players or been stuck on them. And when I expected people to come along with made-up stories, they did!
Latest I've heard is that nothing is done yet, and things could fall apart at any moment, but there -- I said it. 51%. |

The difference, is the media outlets have caught it which means its serious. last year the media never picked up the T-Mac to LA rumor because it was nothing but speculation.
Kidd to LA has serious legs. more legs then any Trade rumors we have heard in the past during the deadline during the modern tri years. |

I'm pessimistic about this trade now too after being very optimistic throughout the week. However, Larry's belief that this deal is more likely to happen than not happen stems pessimism...somewhat. |

Latest I heard on that was Vescey's opinion. We need to scour the fan blogs to see where Pete got his info..... |

Larry......Lord knows I'm getting REALLY ahead of myself here, but if this deal were to go down in it's present incarnation (with Collins), would that pretty much eliminate the possibility of the Lakers using their MLE until 2009-10, being that any player that we were to sign would in fact cost us twice as much due to the luxury tax? |

I believe Brian Grants contract expires after this season so I think we only have to worry about the luxury tax for this season. I could be wrong though. |

Grant was cut under the amnesty clause. We might be paying him, but he doesn't impact the Luxury Tax. |

Correct. The team will be in grave danger of paying the tax with Kidd, and especially with Collins. But this weekend, Mitch pointed out in an interview, "We've paid the tax before..." |

And they have.
If the Lakers have a shot at contending, they will and have paid the tax. I'm pretty sure that they only dropped below the tax level when they traded Shaq. |

Tell me if this doesn't sound like a GM preparing the fans for a major move
Quote: | From Rod Thorn to Nets' season ticket holders
With NBA All-Star Weekend upon us, I would like to give you
my thoughts on the state of the team and the outlook for the
rest of the season and beyond. Our season ticket holders
are part of the Nets family and it is important to us to
keep you informed.
First, from our perspective we are disappointed in our
record so far this season. While we have been hurt by
injuries, particularly those to Nenad Krstic and Richard
Jefferson, our second and third leading scorers
respectively, we have been able to pur ourselves in a
position to win almost every night only to lose a number of
close contests. Our coaches and players continue to work
diligently to improve our defensive and offensive execution
in late game situations so many of these defeats can be
turned into victories.
Secondly, there has been a lot of speculation regarding
potential player transactions prior to the February 22nd
trading deadline. Our position on this issue has always been
and will continue to be that we are always looking to
improve the team either short term or long term, and if
something presents itself that will enable us to do so, then
we will pursue it.
Finally, there have been a number of positive things that
have happened this year and give us optimism for the
remainder of the season. One of our goals during the
off-season was to improve our bench play and in that we have
succeeded. Newcomers Marcus Williams, Eddie House, Josh
Boone, Hassan Adams and Mikki Moore have played solidly with
the latter having moved into the starting lineup and
performed admirably over the past month. With Richard
Jefferson expected to return to the lineup in March, we feel
confident that we will stay in the playoff hunt for the
duration of the season.
Hopefully, I've been able to answer some of your questions
regarding the state of the team. I thank you for your
support and I'm looking for a better third of the season.
Sincerely,
Rod Thorn
President

Same thoughts here, as he A) mentions his teams' 2 injured, young players, B) talks about being willing to do what it takes to win - be it for the now or later, C) talks up the talent on the bench that is more likely to help in the future, D) mentions RJ getting back healthy for a playoff run, and most importantly, E) not one time does he mention a possible VC or Kidd trade - not even the mentioning of "exploring possibilities". _________________ Stephon Marbury on Kobe: "He's the only person on 'dis earth that can do 'dat. He guards people, like shuts 'em down. Then, to do 'dat on 'da offensive end. It's like 'Damn, I can't score on him AND he about to bust my ass." |
