James Gang... LeBron just swished his second three over Sabonis in overtime, a deep wing bomb with the clock low. He turned to the crowd and shook his head. Nothing anyone in the league can do about that step-back shot from deep.

The backbreaker from the Lakers gunslinger, however, was a corner turnaround swish to go up by 6 with 40 seconds left of overtime. When the perimeter shot is falling like that, teams are generally in trouble.

LeBron was methodical in that fourth and overtime. He hunted matchups as we ran inverse screens with shooters. That led to big threes for Monk and Ellington and helped the Lakers take their first lead of the game with 4:30 left in regulation.

Without AD in the mix, Vogel went to our centerless lineup down the stretch of regulation and overtime. They had the trio of Melo, Ellington and Monk on the floor for a lot of this and somehow worked it out. Credit all those guys, but especially LeBron for running that center spot beautifully.

“I’m able to basically call all the coverages before the team can get into it and get the other four guys in position so we are not caught off guard,” LeBron said.

He captained the team as the small ball center for most of the fourth and overtime and then threw the knockout punches on offense.

“Us being better,” Monk said afterward, “is him communicating everything and why he’s in the backline.”

Vogel shuffled through man D with traditional centers hedging or in a drop coverage. He went back to the zone until the Pacers overloaded the side and created shots far too easily. He abandoned that in the second half and finally settled in on riding or dying with that centerless lineup during crunch time. The Lakers worked it out for the 124-116 win.

LeBron -- -- Perhaps not the smartest of shots by LeBron as he iso’d on Sabonis in overtime. Ideally, you attack the slower-footed defender who had foul trouble. But LeBron knocked down the threes. Big shots they were. He’d then hit that big turnaround jumper. Stu remarked this is vintage LeBron. If he means vintage like the an old version of LeBron, that’s what this is. It’s certainly not young LeBron. He wasn’t driving, imposing his athleticism and size down the stretch. He was using the threat of that and taking advantage of all that work he’s put in on his jumper. He’d finish with 39 points and 6 assists, sinking 5 threes on the night. He was methodical down the stretch hunting the switches. In the first half, we saw more drives as he had 17 points on 6-10 shooting and 3 assists to lead the team at the half. Quite a night. “He put on one hell of a show,” Vogel said. The Stats: He scored 39 points on 13-29 shooting (5-12 from three, 8-9 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 6 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 43 minutes. He was a -3.

Westbrook -- -- He was actually awful defensively in that first half. He got backdoored a couple of times. He was not boxing out. It felt like Vogel actually sat him for a stretch longer because of that D in the first half, which might have helped later to have that energy on the second night of the back to back. He had 12 points on 3-6 shooting and 3 assists in the first half. The D picked up in the second half immediately. He had a couple of digs/reaches to force turnovers. The Pacers had just 2 turnovers all first half and he helped them into a couple quick ones in the second half. Some ugly moments offensively. He choked a dunk with about 4 minutes left, losing control of the ball as he went up uncontested in transition. He also airballed a 12-footer by about two feet on another pull up. Good job getting to the line, however. He was intentionally fouled with 22 seconds left up 1 and he made both. In OT, he also hit a big bank shot to get us going. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 5-15 shooting (1-3 from three, 9-11 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 5 assists, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a +14.

Horton-Tucker -- -- I’m not quite sure what’s going on. He’s struggled to finish the last couple of games. Blowing easier layups than we usually see, too. And he’s not even close on some of these reverses. Obviously, you wonder about the thumb, but he wouldn’t be back if he wasn’t healed. He had a nice drive, bumping his man and scoring a layup in transition. He hit a step-back wing jumper. He found Ellington for a couple of his threes. One was off a ghost screen on an ATO that drew Ellington’s man to him and he kicked it to the corner. That was a nice play design by the staff as Ellington had it going then and we set him up for an easy one. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-10 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -2.

Bradley -- -- He was lucky not to be called for a foul on that corner three in regulation that went down. Wish he defended that kickout better. There’s only one place that pass could go and we let it happen. Prior to that, though, especially in the first half, he was one of our better defenders on the floor. Some really nice recoveries to blow up screens and various plays. That kind of stuff typically goes unnoticed, but it’s what we lack without AC on the floor all the time. Bradley did a great job containing his man on those screens and recovering after going over the top. Offensively, nothing going on and our other guards had it going, so that limited some of his time. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 25 minutes. He was a -10.

Jordan -- -- There was a sequence that was DJ in a nutshell. Bradley had a nice drive baseline and threw up the lob for DJ to slam. Great play. On the other end he sat back in drop coverage as his man was up high screening off a defender and allowing us to give up an uncontested three. In case you are wondering, this is why he doesn’t close games. Shooters can get into space and hit some easy ones off him. With no AD tonight, we needed our bigs to just not get destroyed and we managed that much. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting to go with 11 boards, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -5.

Anthony -- -- He had 12 points on 3-8 shooting at the half, including a couple of threes. He’d only score a couple points in the second half. His best play in the second half might have been winning the jumpball of OT. Not sure how we got that. The Pacers were really isolating him on defense in OT. They were coming for him. We worked it out, however, somehow giving up just 4 points. Sketchy moments basically swapping AD for him and surviving. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 4-13 shooting (2-7 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 foul sin 30 minutes. He was a +14.

Howard -- -- He got a couple of points on putbacks, looking like Dwight from a couple years ago. He’s kind of struggled on those types of plays this season. He also had a nice drive and dish to Melo for a three. One of Westbrook’s turnovers, Dwight didn’t seal his man, let him step around and also didn’t go to meet the ball on a slow developing pass. Felt like both those guys should have got half a turnover on that. But Dwight then also didn’t get back in transition off that and we gave up a hoop. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-4 shooting to go with 9 boards (4 offensive), 1 assist and 3 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -3.

Monk -- -- Huge second half offensively, including several big shots when we finally caught the Pacers. He drilled a step-back three to cut it to 3. He ran the inverse-screen with LBJ and hit the three of that to cut it to 6. Guys are so worried about LeBron on those that they sometimes don’t switch on the shooters. When they do switch, then that’s LeBron’s man to take care of. Monk hit another three with 4:30 left to get our first lead of the game. He’d also get fouled in transition for a couple FTs with 2 minutes to go. Not always clean from him. In OT he had a wild dribble on a pushout and was called for a turnover. Defensively, he was fairly active. He did give up a straight line drive, but if he can play D on a rope and have LeBron helping him on where to go while hitting offensively, that’s what will get him minutes. Glad to see him and Wayne step up tonight. We needed it with AD out. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-11 shooting (3-6 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +15.

Ellington -- -- Excellent game from him. He knocked down 4-6 from three, including three straight during a key stretch where we were trying to catch the Pacers as we were down 6. When LBJ missed time earlier in the season I think Ellington’s game fell off right with that. Good to see the floor spacing return in this one. Defensively, he had some moments on the glass and even on a challenge or two. It wasn’t always great (he gave up a straight line drive in the first half), but he was holding his own in some very tricky lineups. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-7 shooting (4-6 from three) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists and no fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +20.

Vogel -- -- Key Moment: Maybe giving up that huge corner three to Duarte and lucky it wasn’t an And-1 for the win. The Lakers handled their business once again in OT from there.

Key Substitution: Going centerless with some combination of LeBron and Russ, Melo, Ellington, Monk or THT down the stretch. Vogel said they went to it longer than he wanted, but it brought them back after trailing by a good amount early in the fourth.

Key Stats: The Lakers shot 15-37 (40.5%) from three. Lakers also had just 11 turnovers. Offensively, that will get it done.

Great write up DB.

Good one DB.

Not an ideal win, and way too similar to other close call wins which are followed by an awful game or more...but, obviously will take any positives for now. We will not be able to rely on LBJ going off like that all the time, so...hopefully the other guys get it together.

Nice win. Great to see Ellington finally hit some open looks again. He’s been in a slump the last few games.

Bron/Westbrook have shown they can share the ball well in terms of the attack points of the game. Westbrook takes over earlier in game (IE 3rd Q) and Bron later in the game. Have seen this play out yesterday but also in the wins against CLE/Houston.

Wonder if that's the whole plan moving forward. Westbrook has figured out that he is best attacking from the wing, and has found his attacking angles in our offense. He also is deferring to Bron in the 4th. We definitely win that Knicks game 2 nights ago when Westbrook sat, and THT was running the O, if Bron is in the game. That's when you rely on Bron.

Crazy that the big 3 have only played about 7 games together. 6-3 with Bron, but 1 game Bron left at halftime. Yesterday no AD.

My notes from the game:

Westbrook's D was very good in the 2nd half/OT.
Monk is an enigma. One good game for every bad game. When he plays well on O, he tries hard on D.
Melo is hunted on the perimeter on D but more often than not we figure it out.
We're better when we run Dwight or DeAndre at the 5 as it gives us some physicality for a bit. And size for boards.
THT is not a guy we can rely on for big minutes around the big 3. He is not a reliable shooter nor a reliable PG/shot creator yet. Talent is there, but his contract is the one we should target to move via trade.
The spread offense with Bron at PG is a very good closing/4th Q option.
We're a completely different team on offense with Bron vs without.

What's our record if Bron plays say 18 games instead of 9? Maybe 12-6 in those games. We're talking about this season completely different if Bron plays more games. Our issues have been exagerrated due to the Bron injury/rest. However we also have some roster issues. We need a KCP type player to compliment the big 3 badly. We need that guy througout the game, a core player, who can give you some 3 point shooting, but also defend bigger 2s and some 3s. I know they hope THT can be that guy, however he's more of a shot creator. Would love to see a move to get that kind of player around the stars.

There’s a chance with a healthy trio and our shooters catching fire at right time, 16 playoff win, tough but WB/AD and WB/Bron combo have shown glimpses

Thanks, DB!

LeBron is old but he's still good. In a different way, but still a damn good basketball player.

I'm not worried about THT, honestly. Dude is still fresh off injury, with 5/6 games under his belt. He's just starting to play himself into game shape/rhythm. He had a hot start, but that shouldn't be expected every night. He's going to have up's and down's.

Some people calling for him to be traded, so soon after his return, is ridiculous.

Look forward to AD (along with DJ and Dwight) to continue the same effectiveness
