WBC President to allow Canelo-Cotto fight if they sign contract to defend against Golovkin
Quote:
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman will reportedly give the green light to a fight this year between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, as long as they both sign a contract stating that the winner of the Canelo-Cotto fight will face WBC interim middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin next.
Cotto is taking a voluntary title defense against #6 WBC Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) on June 6th next month at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. If Cotto gets past Geale in their 157 pound catch-weight fight, he’s supposed to be defending his WBC title against Golovkin, his mandatory next.
Sulaiman will allow Cotto to bypass the Golovkin fight and face Canelo this year, but he’ll need to sign a contract stating that the winner of the fight will face Golovkin. It’s unfortunate that Sulaiman has to go to these lengths to get the winner of the Canelo vs. Cotto fight to defend against Golovkin, because they should do it simply because he’s the WBC mandatory and he’s considered to be the No.1 fighter in the 160 pound division.
Ring Magazine has Cotto as their middleweight champion and Golovkin as the next highest rated fighter in the division, but that’s clearly an oddball rating and makes no sense in the real world.
Cotto was given that prestigious ranking based on beating the gimpy-legged, 40-year-old Sergio Martinez rather than someone in their prime with two healthy legs like Golovkin. Cotto is clearly not in the same league as Golovkin in my view, and I don’t see Cotto as deserving a higher ranking than Golovkin.
“WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said if Cotto beats Geale, he’d allow him to face Alvarez on the condition that they both sign a contract to then subsequently defend against Golovkin,” Kevin Iole said on Yahoo Sports.
I think Canelo and Cotto will sign the contract to get their fight made, but I also see the winner of their fight vacating the WBC title immediately after their fight rather than the winner facing Golovkin and subsequently getting knocked out cold.
Sulaiman can pressure Canelo and Cotto to sign a contract stating that the winner of their fight will face Golovkin, but it won’t mean much if the winner of that fight turns around and vacates the WBC belt immediately instead of getting in the ring with Golovkin and taking a beating.
Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya has already said that he’s not going to consider putting Canelo in with Golovkin until two years from now. In other words, not until Golovkin is 35, heading towards 36. It seems pretty obvious that the idea is to match Canelo with Golovkin when he’s an aging fighter near the end of his career rather than in his prime.
Gotta credit Suliman for pressing the issue. Golovkin took an unnecessary fight with Rubio for the interim WBC title just to be the number one contender for Cotto. Now Cotto will defend his title against a guy that Golovkin destroyed in three rounds at a catch weight of 157.

Roman Gonzalez
Quote:
INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Floyd Mayweather has been largely unchallenged as the world's finest fighter for more than a decade. Now, though, there may be a debate.
Flyweight Roman Gonzalez made his HBO debut on Saturday a spectacular one, dumping Edgar Sosa three times en route to a successful WBC title defense at The Forum, forcing referee Raul Caiz Sr. to stop it at 2:37 of the second. It raised Gonzalez's record to 43-0 with his 37th knockout and burnished his reputation as an elite champion.
He may not be the best in the world yet, but there aren't but a very few fighters who are better than he is at this stage.
Gonzalez, 28, started slowly in the first round, getting the measure of Sosa, who was moving away.
It was for good reason. Once Gonzalez got his sense of timing and distance, he was blistering Sosa with near-perfect three- and four-punch combinations. He was working the body and the head and showing the complete arsenal of speed, power, boxing ability and defense.
"He's good," Sosa said. "He surprised me, but he’s a very good fighter. I can’t tell if he’s the best because it only went two rounds. If the fight had gone longer, I would know more."
Gonzalez has been one of the world's elite for a while, but because American television has had a bias against smaller fighters, he didnt' get an opporunity to fight on the big stage before Saturday.
He took full advantage, pummeling a quality fighter in Sosa. He dropped Sosa three times in the second, forcing Caiz to halt it. He could have stopped it at any point in the final 45 seconds, as Gonzalez was overwhelming Sosa with hard, accurate shots to the body and head.
He credited the late Hall of Famer Alexis Arguello, his countryman and one of the greatest fighters who ever lived, for helping him get to this point.
"With the grace of God and through my training with Alexis Arguello, I was able to put on a performance like this," Gonzalez said. "I am so happy to be here on HBO. I’m very happy with my performance. He was a tough fighter, but my power made the difference. I want to fight Juan Estrada next, hopefully on HBO and hopefully in the United States."
Hopefully he can bring excitement to boxing. Most people won't go any lower than 122. 118 is pushing it. I told you guys about Gonzalez. Dude is just nice. Hopefully he can get a worthwhile scrap in against Estrada or Ioka. Hell, even Viloria wouldn't be bad.

Chocolatito is what boxing is all about. He's one of the sweetest boxers I've seen for some time. Sosa ain't no joke and Gonzalez straight spanked him.
If you are the kind of fan that likes boxing the lower weight divisions are ones you should be watching. Guys there move with speed and precision yet they also pack a punch.
I wish HBO, Showtime would show more lower weight fights. I believe more exposure in those divisions would bring more casual fans to the table. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Whispers have been that Brian Viloria has been trying to get a fight with Roman Gonzalez, but the Gonzalez camp hasn't wanted it. Brian has won world championships at 115 and I think it would be a fantastic fight for HBO.

The last time 115 really had more buzz was when Nonito Donaire upset Vic Darchiniyan, to win his 1st world title. At that time, Vic was demolishing every fighter in his way and was considered a top P4P guy.
Only way the same type of buzz starts coming around for 115, is if Chocolatito keeps knocking guys out consecutively, or there are other top guys that truly challenge him. Nonetheless, loved watching him live, since he hasn't gotten any TV exposure until now. _________________ Just chill and watch the new Dynasty evolve...

Seems like Jr. is trying to make up ground, where some where starting to question his Dad's decision makings, prior to his passing.
What's funny is, Cotto already stated that all of his fights at middleweight will be at catchweights, so he won't be fighting anyone at 160.
The great news is that, GGG already said that he'd come down to 154 for the winner of Floyd vs. Manny (which, we all knew neither were realistic opponents for GGG, since they're both already small for welterweight), so that just means they'd have no problem fighting Cotto at his desired catchweight!
In the meantime, I wouldn't mind seeing GGG vs. Andy Lee, for the WBO title. Since his fight with Quillen was a draw, Andy increased his value, and Quillen didn't even make weight to win the title anyway. Since Jermain Taylor was stripped, looks like N'Dam vs. Lemieux is the fight for the vacant title. Wouldn't mind seeing GGG going for a unification match against the winner either, especially if it were Lemieux, I think that'd be an awesome fight with a mix of great boxing skills and slugfest.
Will the fight be carried by either HBO or Showtime? _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Sulaiman will allow them. How delusional. Everyone knows they will vacate, Cotto will probably vacate before hand and fight Canelo without the strap on the line. Cotto is old and has been through it he doesn't need the ass whooping and not fighting will hurt him none. Golovkin has progressed at his pace fighting not so stellar opposition and now is a grown man, I wish Canelo would fight him but he still has big money fights and time to grow, so I wouldn't exactly say he's waiting for him to get old. He's 24 has been pro for a while with a decent resume, he'll progress at his pace and not anyone else's.
LD, Golovkins team already stated 154 was for Floyd only. Lemieux would be nice as well as Andy Lee. Quillen isn't happening. The dude unfortunately is just stuck.

Don't they have to compensate GGG if they forego fighting him?

Sounds crazy, dudes paying not to fight em >.<
Gennady will get a portion of the monetary compensation not the recognition he deserves. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

What he wants is the lineal title which is what Ring Magazine attempts to represent. If Cotto vacates then the WBC will schedule a fight for the vacant title and GGG being the number 1 contender will be in it. Andy Lee will apparently fight Billy Joe Saunders for some good money in the UK but I don't think Andy will shy away from a GGG bout. Kid Chocolate
Is on the outside looking in since Al had him dump his strap instead of fighting Korobov, who was beaten by Andy Lee. He also lost 1.4 mill for not taking that fight. Haymon working for his guys!

It would be a good fight. Don't think it would end well. Seems like he comes up short against those top fighters (Sosa and Estrada). Just think Gonzales is on a whole different level right now. Plus I don't like that seven year age difference.

Age is the bane of Chocolatito and GGG, both are 28.
I hope promoters will see what the advantage of showcasing them now would be for boxing.
