PostPosted: Sun Mar 27, 2011 8:45 pm    Post subject: Thoughts on a LakersGround Mobile App

I am thinking about possibly writing a mobile app for LakersGround. I got the idea from surfing LG on my iPad and simply wondering how the experience might be different inside of a native app. On something like the iPad with the increased screen real estate, Safari probably suffices for most users. But on a smaller device, like an iPhone or an Android phone, it may be nice to have a dedicated app to optimize how LG is presented to the user.

Having said that, I wanted to see if anyone would be interested in such a thing. LG has a reasonably large community so I feel that it would be a positive to make a contribution like this. From what I can tell, there is no LG app on any app stores at the moment. If I were to do this, I would do free apps on both Android and iOS (not sure which one would come first).

So basically, I want to know:

    * Would an iOS/Android app for LG interest you?
    * If such an app existed, what would you like to see in it (features, layout, etc.)?
    * And to any staff/admin/mods who may be interested in answering, what would be the feasibility of setting up something like this (is there any sort of API for the site, would you allow such a thing, etc.)?

If this ground has been covered before, I apologize. I am just curious and I think it would be fun.

Note: I am posting this here because I could not determine whether "Off Topic" or "User Feedback" was more applicable and felt that this could be potentially good for the site as a whole so it would be better to place it where it could obtain more exposure.

If there was an android app I would certainly use it. Will give some thought to features, but mostly being able to read posts and respond are the main things. Spell check would be nice.

Iphone/Ipad for sure. This is a great idea, and I remember it being talked about a few years ago, but nothing ever transpired. I would love the app, as reading the site on my Iphone via safari strains my eyes.

I've surfed LG on the Ipad via safari and I have no problems with it.

iPhone here.

I'd want it to be simple and do the basic things well. For instance, I wouldn't want to see avatars, because that wastes space.

This would be great, if it's done the right way.

I always thought it would be funny having a Twitter-style feed mainlined straight from the Game Threads. Watch the game and get bipolar "play-by-play" at the same time.

I know that there's mobile apps for discussion boards, such as phpBB. Might want to look at a few of them, and come up with a streamlined, simplified one for this site. Review threads. Post. Get status on threads you care about.

That's a good idea, LG is the number one site that I use on my iPhone/iPad/(Droid in the past). Safari loads up fairly quickly so I have no probes with the current setup and have gotten used to responding to threads with it. Of course, the auto-correct feature notwithstanding(that was "probs" not probes).

As mentioned in earlier threads of this nature, why not just redo the site so that is is more mobile browser friendly. There are a ton of message boards that have implemented this function.

But so far, not LG.

LG has one, called ToGo, but I forget how to get to it.

I know about this section but to be honest, that's a horrible implementation of what I'm talking about. There are way more advanced mobile versions of message boards I've seen out there.

So you can only view threads and comments? you can't actually comment yourself?

With a native app, you would want to take advantage of what such a format can provide that a mobile browser cannot (or at least, cannot do as well). The ability for threads to update in real time (instead of having to manually refresh) and the ability to watch certain threads (sort of like taking a thread and placing it off into a special container for your convenience) are two examples of good features which could take advantage of this format.

If you got the time, that would be great.

Sometimes, when I get really bored l dive into the archives of the User Feedback/ Report Bug forum. There's app threads litterd about every year or two.

One day I'll probably read this post there and giggle to myself.
