http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers/la-sp-lakers-20111217,0,3278039.story
Quote: | Veteran guard Baron Davis became a free agent Friday after none of the teams under the salary cap put in a bid to claim him. He can now sign with any team, and the Lakers and New York Knicks will look into his health before taking any further steps.
Davis was bothered by a bad back in recent years and did not take part in training camp. His agent told various media outlets that Davis would be sidelined several weeks because of back pain
."I've known Baron forever," said a longtime acquaintance who asked not to be identified. "All he's ever wanted to do was be a Laker. | "
Meh. Too old. And there are better players around. Louis Williams is probably my favorite. Sure, not a true PG but the guy is amazing, I see a lot of TP in him. I guess for vet's min I would sign Baron...why not..but I'd also want another PG. I don't trust Baron's health for one and I would like a younger PG. |

Baron, if healthy, could add quite a bit on offense. I don't remember ever seeing him play defense, to include his two years with UCLA!
The question is whether Davis brings enough upside to cut the minutes of Blake and Morris (assuming he makes the team). My view is that as a role player, Baron Davis has a lot to add. But, clearly he is not the "answer" at PG that we are all hoping for. That ship sailed a long time ago, unfortunately.
I'd like to see how Baron responds in the Lakers culture. I don't think he's ever been (since UCLA) on a team that has a champion mindset. This could really make a difference. |

Heard that AC Green and John Salley are working out and looking to give it a go. J/K Anyway, Baron's got that disc issue which might scare off some under the cap teams trying to pick him up before he clears waivers, hopefully the Lakers will have a crack at him.
Go UCLA, got Barnes, Kopono, and maybe Baron.

Davis to us can be what Cassell was for the Celtics 3 years ago. And that's about it IMO. |

Judging by some of these responses, I guess beggars can be choosers. |

Ha! Speaking of Nick, remember when the Lake show had Nick the Quick, Kobe, Eddie Jones, AND Shaq??!!
If only Phil had been coaching at that time. That was a lot of wasted talent. |

I think the back injury was more talk to keep teams from bidding on him, but if Davis is up for the Lakers it would be a good fit. It doesn't matter that he gets the minimum salary from the Lakers as the Cavs are paying the bill. What better situation than to have Davis be an contributing member of the team and Dan Gilbert footing the bill. He can still ball if healthy. |

There are many good PG's available out there. It's not like we're desperate. We"ll get someone for that position, it's a matter of time. Davis quite simply isn't the right person for it, he can be a great backup but I wouldn't want him to be that starting PG that we need. Even if you ignore his age, he's still injury prone. There are like 5 or 6 PG's available that would be great for us. So no, I don't think we're beggars. |

I remember when we signed Divac with the MLE. Then he had this same back injury, herniated disc, that kept him out most of the season. Even when he came back he wasn't able to do anything productive. I doubt Baron will be able to provide anything significant this season. Pass. |

Oh yeah, that was one heckuva roster, Elden was there too, they had all the potential but couldn't get over the hump. Chants of Eddie Eddie Eddie echoed through the Forum, good times. |

How many of those five or six are actually obtainable? How many of those are interested in the Lakers? |

Baron would be great IF he is healthy.
Baron, Fish(Perfect role), Blake
Kobe, Ebanks, Kapono
Barnes, Metta
Pau, McRoberts, Walton (if we could just let release him to make space)
Bynum
Morris, Goudelock, Caracter |

Seriously. You couldn't have found a worse coach for that group of guys.
Well, maybe Rambis. |

Even if he didn't have the back issue, I doubt he's even in shape. |

I think the Lakers should take a chance. They should check out his back, of course, but they would be signing him to the vets minimum. Offer him 2 years at the minimum (he'll still be making $13-14 mil per from his other contract), let him sit out a while, and see if he can figure out a way to get back and in shape by playoff time. Low risk, high reward. |

Bring him in..
What do we lose?
Plus I wonder if his back issues are just a ploy to keep teams away |

geesh its not like were gonna sign the guy to a multi year deal. IF Baron really wants to be a Laker then a year and maybe 2nd year team option for the vets minimum would be a good deal considering his health concerns. Theirs no denying he'd be a good fit if healthy. Who knows maybe all this bad back talk is just to scare of early bidders so he can choose where he wants land.
Some of you are saying their are better options but don't even care to say who... |

Why all the negativity....
Dude can still ball. Hes not cp3 but would any of us be complaining if none of the drama that happened last week happened and we just got bdavis as an upgrade....
Plus the cheap risk of picking him up would be worth it if he broke out and gilbert had to watch |
