To Live and Die in LA worth a mention. Willem Dafoe as a counterfeiter.
Not that it's a great movie, but Tequila Sunrise. Pat Riley was the influence for Kurt Russell's character. |

Swingers is one of my all time favorites. Ish never gets old for me.
America Me/Mi Vida Loca/Training Day: Representing Echo Park.
No mention of Heat? Michael Mann generally does a great job of capturing the essence of LA. You know, with the smog and all the shootings.

I'm so glad no one said CRASH.
Terrible movie and probably the worst movie ever to win an Oscar for Best Picture, by far.
Some white guy who has never been east of La Cienega wrote that movie and invented an LA race story that is so far from reality for LA and for race relations that it's comical. |

That other LA movie, Crash should be on this list though. _________________ ♪ ♫One good thing about music, when it hits, you feel no pain...

They set out to use the dirty/seedy backdrop of the ugly parts of LA as a character in itself and they succeeded. It has much more of an LA feel than most of the others named thus far, save for Boyz.
Hard to put Reservoir Dogs in there being that most of it was filmed in the building, but there's a ton of LA commentary that few outside of the area would understand.

'Beginners" which came out last year and provided Christopher Plummer an Oscar, was practically filmed in my backyard. Just about every location in that film is a stone's throw from my place, and when Melanie Laurent's character takes Ewan McGregor to "her favorite taco truck", it also happens to be my favorite taco truck. _________________ 14-5-3-12 |
