I’m in SF now but got word from my company that we can work remotely for at least a year (maybe even permanently)...so there’s no reason for me to spend $3k/month in a city where everything is closed anyway....
Anywho, looking to buy a condo or house in an area in LA that has some upside in appreciation in home value in next 4-5 years. Any thoughts? I haven’t been in LA that frequently in over 5 years. Back then, I heard Arts District is the best place to be in terms of upside.....is that still true or are there other places I should look at?
Lookin lg for something in $800-850k range if that matters (max), but preferably cheaper and with low HOA _________________ Billions Billions Billions

which california policies do you hate?
Not necessarily the policies but the cost of living is just astronomical. 800K for a 1300 square foot townhouse in So Cal versus a 2500 square foot home on a giant property up on the Colorado river. Austin checks off a lot of boxes for me. A liberal town with none of the Hollyood crazyiness, tons of great restaurants a robust night life. I'm also getting WAY more into nature type activities (another thing you wouldn't have caught me dead saying during my decades of hard partying as well).
I'll just have to wait and see how the dust settles...not even sure if my place survives the Summer.

Austin sounds and is nice on many levels, but the fact that it is in Texas becomes unavoidable if you live there. If the coronavirus has taught me anything, it’s that what state you live in matters a ton, as much as what city.
It’s also true that you tend to trade lifestyle and income with cost. There are confluences or lower cost and good lifestyle or income, but it is hard to find a place where people really want to live and are awesome, and not be expensive. _________________ “We must always take sides. I’m salivating at the idea that I can get 1309 square feet in LA for for 800k. I’m currently looking at 550 square foot studios in SF for 850k _________________ Billions Billions Billions

I'm not sure if it's doable in the heart of LA as i haven't checked. I was thinking one of the suburbs. _________________ KOBE

That's getting tougher to find in Austin proper, at least along the river. Better get out here before Tesla builds their new plant and brings Silicon Valley money with them.

I read Boise is the #1 SoCal ex-patriot location. Sell your modest home, live like a king. You'll have to put up with the ornery riff-raff, but probably worth it.

Yeah, turns out the "affordable" housing my neighbors rabidly fought so hard against (a fight broke out in one meeting) isn't so affordable. A real estate agent informed me they're actually yuppie condos. If anything it will increase the value of the area.
A teacher of mine once told me she'd rather live Torrance than Beverly Hills because the weather is better.
You can move to my area, West Garden Grove, (zip code 92845), many people have negative thoughts on GG, but West GG (just north of were the 405 and 22 freeways meet) is a miles away from the main GG area. It is a super safe, clean, crime-free place, and houses hold their values well..
12 minutes from the actual beaches of Huntington Beach or Seal Beach. Near three major freeways (405, 605 & 22). Very good schools (they local HS just totally remodeled and the Middle School did a few years back).
Houses are in the $700-$800k range.
And West GG, is right next to Cypress, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach. Rossmoor is very close (Multi-million dollar homes there), about 10 minutes from the east side of lower Long Beach, Cal State Long Beach, etc...
Gets good ocean breezes and does not get the heat that inland OC gets.. _________________ “Always remember... Rumors are carried by haters, spread by fools, and accepted by idiots.”

Same, dude.
I have family that moved up to Oregon/Washington and I am seriously considering the move. _________________ "Dread it, run from it... destiny arrives all the same."

You know what area might be interesting (or maybe that ship has already sailed) is the Mt. Washington/Eagle Rock area. There are quite a few mid-century modern homes in that area. I knew someone who lived there 20 years ago...it felt kind of run down back then, but there were some great homes...it's close to downtown.

That's the area sandwiched between Pasadena and Glendale right? Saw a listing for a new 2000 sq ft home for 800K in that area. Sounds too good to be true no? Just north of Downtown a bit, a stone's throw from Old Town Pasadena and not too far from the mountains. _________________ KOBE

You must live in the same area of GG as a buddy of mine. He says it's nice out there. The only drawback is the commute. If I worked in OC I wouldn't mind living out there. _________________ "Suck it up. Don't be a baby. Do your job." - Kobe Bryant

Yeah, I hear ya, in the 23 years I've been here, I've worked off the 405 @ Century (the drive sucked) and most recently at the 405 & the 5 (Irvine - the drive sucked).. right now, I have a 4.5 mile, non freeway drive and it's awesome beyond words..! _________________ “Always remember... The quality of life between having a long work commute versus a short one is astronomical. My first job out of college was in Century City. 2 hours each way from Irvine for a year. If I had stayed any longer I probably would have done time for road rage. _________________ KOBE
