Five changes the Princeton offense could bring to the Lakers

The moment the Lakers bring the ball up the floor, plenty of movement will ensue. They'll constantly make cuts and passes to ensure balanced spacing. Regardless of position, each player will operate from various spots on the floor. How they run these sets and counters won't be predetermined. It will mostly depend on how the defense reacts.

Ah, the glory days of the triangle offense. The Lakers didn't always love running Phil Jackson's system, and they proved eager in moving to a more traditional offense under Mike Brown once Jackson retired. But the triangle helped the Lakers win five championships. And with the Lakers lacking offensive efficiency last season, some players privately wished the triangle offense would return.

That moment may never come, but it appears it could emerge in a different form. Various reports indicate Brown will hire Eddie Jordan on his coaching staff after both Ettore Messina and Quin Snyder left this summer to take coaching stints with CSKA Moscow, a basketball powerhouse overseas. Yahoo! Sports reported that Kobe Bryant has talked with Brown about using Jordan's version of the Princeton offense with the Lakers.

Below are five changes that could bring.

Lakers Reportedly Interested in Signing CJ Miles

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, there’s mutual interest between the LA Lakers and unrestricted free agent forward CJ Miles: “The 6-foot-6, 222-pound Miles could make a decision during the next 2-3 days. If he signs with the Lakers, the source said, it’ll likely be a one- or two-year deal via Los Angeles’ mini mid-level exception. Miles, 25, has already met with Dallas and Cleveland since free agency started July 1. He averaged 8.4 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists for Utah from 2005-12, playing in 389 games (159 starts). Miles’ best season was in 2010-11, when he set career highs in average points (12.8), rebounds (3.3) and minutes (25.2). His production slipped last year, though, when he shot just 38.1 percent from the floor and failed to land a consistent spot in the Jazz’s rotation

Lakers to go Ivy League on offense?

The Lakers last season were often, put mildly, an inelegant group offensively. No real surprise, given everything they faced. New coach, no training camp, unlearning the triangle offense anchoring most of the group (and particularly Kobe Bryant) for years while simultaneously learning what Mike Brown wanted them to do in a system more dependent on set play calls.

Change was in order. From a personnel standpoint it certainly came with the acquisitions of Steve Nash and Antawn Jamison, but also could be more structural. As Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports, according to Bryant the Lakers will in 2012-13 once again become a "system" team, not with Phil Jackson's triangle but Pete Carril's Princeton offense.

Writes Woj:
"... The prospect of returning to the discipline of an offensive system in the post-Phil Jackson era holds appeal.

"It's a great offense," Bryant told Yahoo! Sports. "It's exactly what we need. It takes us back to being able to play by making reads and reacting to defenses. It takes a great deal of communication, but that's where we're at our best: Reading and reacting as opposed to just coming down and calling sets. Calling sets make you vulnerable.

"There's so many threats, so many options, it's very tough to defend. Against the type of defenses that teams play nowadays, they load up on one side and are constantly coming with help from the weak side. The Princeton offense makes it very, very tough to lock in on one particular player.

"From my experience, those types of principles -- ball movement, changing sides on the floor, everybody being involved -- those are championship principles. That's championship DNA."

Olympic Basketball 2012: Kobe Bryant Quiet In Team USA Victory Over Tunisia

Team USA didn’t need much from Kobe Bryant (or LeBron James for that matter) in order to spank the Tunisian national team in a 110-63 rout. Bryant did score the first bucket of the game so if nothing else at least he gave his country a kick start as the gold medal favorites improved to a 2-0 mark in group play.
That first bucket by Bryant was one of two he dropped in the opening quarter which would be good for his total for the entire contest. Four points on five shots is a slow 10 minutes of hoops for KB24 in an NBA game but in the Olympics that’s just fine for KB10. At least for now it is.
