Devin Ebanks to re-sign with Lakers on Monday

Lakers forward Devin Ebanks will accept the Lakers' qualifying offer on Monday, according to his agent, David Bauman. (Wally Skalij / Los Angeles Times / April 13, 2012 / August 12, 2012)

By Mark Medina

August 12, 2012, 10:37 p.m.
After taking his physical Monday at the Lakers' training facility, forward Devin Ebanks will sign the Lakers' qualifying offer that entails a one-year deal worth a little more than $1 million, according to his agent, David Bauman.

The deal doesn't exactly elicit the same headlines as the Lakers' acquiring Steve Nash or Dwight Howard this off-season. But it is yet another move the Lakers have made to shore up a bench that finished near the last in the league in scoring.

Ebanks, 23, averaged 4.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in his second season with the Lakers last year, and earned a few unexpected promotions. He started the season's first four games at small forward. Ebanks started five games at shooting guard while Kobe Bryant nursed a left shin injury in the season. And Ebanks started in place of Metta World Peace during his seven-game suspension for elbowing Oklahoma City guard James Harden two games before the playoffs. As a starter, Ebanks averaged 6.4 points on 47.8% shooting and 3.2 rebounds. Bauman said four other unspecified teams made "serious calls" about Ebanks, but sensed he's going to keep developing with the Lakers.

Ebanks "feels they know him now and what he's capable of and can contribute," Bauman told The Times in a phone interview Sunday evening. "He's going to be given a chance to get a role on the team."

Dwight Howard trade: Lakers show more commitment to winning

By Mark Medina

August 13, 2012, 8:00 a.m.
The moment he hung up the phone Thursday, Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak stared across the room at Coach Mike Brown.

Kupchak had just ended a conference call with officials of the Orlando Magic, Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers, the final chapter of what Kupchak described as a "frustrating" process in pursuing Dwight Howard.

After all, the Magic spent over a year weighing every trade proposal imaginable, while Howard gave mixed signals on his intentions. Once that phone conversation ended, though, Howard became a Laker. Kupchak recalled the conversation with Brown:

"We have a deal," Kupchak said.

"Who are we getting?" Brown asked.

"Dwight Howard," Kupchak answered.

"Who's going out?" Brown asked.

"Andrew," Kupchak answered, referring to center Andrew Bynum, who will now play with the 76ers.

"That's all?" Brown asked.

Ding: Lakers need not worry about Dwight Howard's health, offense

Kevin Ding column: Dwight Howard's back surgery and desire to score are issues for the Lakers to work out, not major problems in the offing.

Well, it was in NBA 2K12, the video game. But it was newsworthy enough for Lakers coach Mike Brown to report the scoring tally back to Howard, laughingly sharing with his new center how Brown's 17-year-old son Elijah dropped a new Lakers uniform on Howard and went all Man of Steel with him.

For all the Andrew Bynum haters, you'll be glad to know that when Brown told Howard that his digital self must've scored from everywhere on the court to get 119, including 3-point range, Howard plainly told the Lakers' coach: "I won't shoot threes."

Actually, Elijah went 0 for 2 on 3-pointers with Howard as he shot 51 for 67 from the field to score those 119 points in 29 minutes. (You're welcome, Kobe: Elijah let you score four points. And they were critical in the Lakers' 124-122 victory over the Thunder!)

Considering the optimism surrounding Howard's arrival with the Lakers, it feels like Howard and Kobe Bryant will have to take turns scoring 119 points off Steve Nash's and Pau Gasol's passes

These pickups won't get much attention, but I don't think it's hit home that we have ebanks, Jamison, Meeks, and hill all coming of the bench.

Steve Blake isn't as bad as everyone says look for him to play well this season. We went from no bench to having a competent backup at every position.

Not Lakers news directly but thought it would be interesting as it was part of the Howard trade originally reported

Rod Thorn confirms Magic rejected offer that included Andre Iguodala
By Matt Moore | Senior NBA Blogger
August 13, 2012 2:23 pm ET

The Magic passed on Andre Iguodala. (Getty Images)

If Andre Iguodala still isn't super-sold on Denver, he should thank his lucky stars.

Because he could have wound up with the Magic.

Rod Thorn confirmed on radio this week that the original construct of the trade that sent Dwight Howard to the Lakers, Iguodala to Denver and Bynum to Philadelphia was built around just the Sixers, Lakers, and Magic. But a sticking point, it turns out, was that the Magic didn't want the U.S. gold medalist and versatile forward. From Sports Radio Interviews (emphasis ours):

“It's interesting in that we've been talking to the Lakers and to Orlando for the last three weeks. We've been talking about different deals, various deals, and it never got out. In today's world that's something of itself. And then it really came down to, Orlando — they did not want to keep Iguodala because they're going in a different way. And they wanted to move him, and so they talked to a few teams and they ended up making the deal with Denver to move his contract, and that ended up making the deal. It took a while to do it but it ended up getting done.”

Ranking the West: Lakers once again team to beat

August, 13, 2012

By Jeff Caplan | ESPNDallas.com

After what seemed an eternity, the Dwightmare is over. Team USA giddily won gold in London. And the Los Angeles Lakers are again the envy of the NBA.

When U.S. star of stars and Lakers icon Kobe Bryant squeezed Spain foe and L.A. teammate Pau Gasol for an extended embrace after Sunday's gold medal match, surely Bryant whispered in Gasol's ear to savor his stunning survival in Tinseltown and to sharpen his mind the rest of the summer for another championship run -- the one that will even Bryant with Michael Jordan at six.

Noah Graham/Getty ImagesThe Lakers' addition of Dwight Howard makes them the team to beat in the West.
Apologies to the NBA's fun bunch and reigning Western Conference champs in Oklahoma City, but the Lakers are again the team to beat. How can they not be? General manager Mitch Kupchak, the runaway favorite for Executive of the Year, shored up the club's greatest weakness by landing two-time MVP Steve Nash in a sign-and-trade, and last week incredibly upgraded at center as the other 29 franchise's could only shake their heads. L.A. shipped out All-Star Andrew Bynum and acquired the game's most dominant paint force, Dwight Howard.

Lakers make Jodie Meeks, Devin Ebanks signings official

By Mark Medina

August 13, 2012, 2:36 p.m.
Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss deserve a vacation.

A long and relaxing one.

The Lakers announced Jodie Meeks and Devin Ebanks signed with the Lakers on Monday, making their roster pretty much complete. The team now has 14 players under contract. They field a star-studded starting lineup in Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Pau Gasol and Metta World Peace. They added critical reserve pieces in Antawn Jamsion and Jordan Hill.

With Meeks signing a two-year, $3-million deal, the Lakers acquired a definitive backup shooting guard who could lower Bryant's minutes and provide needed outside shooting. The 6-foot-4 Meeks, who played for the Philadelphia 76ers in three of his four NBA seasons, averaged a career-high 37% from three-point range in the last two years.

Ebanks accepted a qualifying offer worth a little over $1 million after averaging four points and 2.3 rebounds in his second season with the Lakers last year. It's likely his playing time will increase since the Lakers didn't resign veteran forward Matt Barnes. Ebanks started 12 games in varying circumstances, averaging 6.4 points on 47.8% shooting and 3.2 rebounds in those contests.

Dwight Howard Is Totally Willing To Do Whatever’s Best For His Team. His New Team, Anyway.

Every morning, the fine folks at Sports Radio Interviews sift through the a.m. drive-time chatter to bring you the best interviews with coaches, players, and personalities across the sports landscape. Today: The new Dwight is all about sacrifice.

Dwight Howard joined Fox Sports Radio with Petros and Money to talk about how excited he is to be a member of the Lakers, how tough this past season has been for him, whether he has talked to Kobe Bryant since getting traded to LA, what he was thinking when the Lakers traded for Steve Nash given his desire to play with a top point guard, what he expects his role to be with the offense and if it is true that his number one team on his list was Brooklyn.

Metta World Peace Calls Himself Best Wing Defender in NBA History

by Faizan Qurashi

August 13, 2012 06:40 PM EDT
Leave it to Metta World Peace to make a bold statement.

After the Lakers made splashes this off-season with major moves in acquiring Steve Nash and Dwight Howard, add to the fact the two other Lakers in Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol were playing in the Olympics in London, World Peace has had to take a back seat with the media and coverage.

So now once he got a chance to be with the media, he made the most of it. According to a report, Metta World Peace called himself "possibly" the best wing defender in the NBA history, and not just in the NBA right now. He made the statements on a radio show with Miss Mimi on Sirius Radio.

Those are bold statements, even for a defender as capable as World Peace. Many NBA fans and athletes would argue that players such as Scottie Pippen or Joe Dumars may have been better wing defenders. The Lakers seem to be in good shape since four of their five starters are All-Stars and the remaining one is "possibly" the best wing defender in NBA history.

He won't have that problem if he's smart enough not to play Nash and Blake at the same time

I agree on all counts. We went from very good to great (assuming full recovery) at center, and from awful to fairly good to amazing at PG this past year. Still, the Lakers aren't title contenders if the bench languishes like it did last year.

Hill, Jamison, Meeks replacing Murphy, McRoberts and Barnes? I'll miss Barnes most, but this is a huge upgrade overall. Add Ebanks and we have solid backups at 2 through 5.

Lots of people are down on Blake, but I remember him settling in late in the season and playing some very respectable ball on both sides of the court. For a second string PG I'm not convinced he's hot garbage like some here think he is.

Now let's see if MB can sort out rotations with this group. I think he's got everything he needs to take the title back to LA.

Currently the choices are Steve Blake, Darius Morris, Chris Duhon (who was acquired in the Howard deal) in the mix, as well as combo guardAndrew Goudelock, whose 2012-13 contract is not fully guaranteed.

Realistically, what would be better options that Mitch/Jim can get

By mid-season, trade Duhon and Morris for JJ Barea. Why Minnesota does this? Not enough minutes to go around between Rubio, Ridnour, Schved.

Plus they would owe Barea 9mill for the following two seasons as opposed to being able to buy out Duhon for 1.5 mill next season.

why should NJ go from one backup role to another with even less pt available - especially noteworthy is that outside shooting is not his forte.

If Nash wasn't there, he would be a good starting PG.

Luke can play the 2 and schved is a NBA rookie while dubious is recovering from a serious injury, hence jj will definitely get more pt and responsibilities because of his experience

Even with your trade, the Lakers sill have a surplus of PGs

It's Haslem, and personally I like Blake over Cole and think Ebanks and Battier are a push, at best, if not a slight nod in Ebanks favor. I think he'll show us flashes of why the Lakers view him as a potential piece of the future as he continues to establish and develop his game. Battier is old and lame at this point in his career, as opposed to just lame... either way, we just one-upped Miami and there's not much they can do about it with their current financial situation, Ray Allen or not. Don't get me wrong they'll be tough, but in the end I think we'll prove too big, too strong, too versatile...
