http://www.draftexpress.com/article/By-the-Numbers-The-2012-Guard-Crop-3986/

While I'm not a big fan of statistics in general, I do appreciate it when the statistics are better specified to show player attributes and habits.

Points Per-40 Minutes Pace Adjusted

Quote:
Name Team League Pts/40p
Damian Lillard Weber State NCAA 27.7
Terrell Stoglin Maryland NCAA 25.8
J'Covan Brown Texas NCAA 22.3
Dion Waiters Syracuse NCAA 21.2
Darius Johnson-Odom Marquette NCAA 20.9

Top 5 within the given list. Aggressive basketball player, but later we'll see where those points come from. Notice how Stoglin and Brown were not drafted, yet Lilliard and Waiters were lottery picks.

It's not about how many points can be scored per 40 minutes, but rather, what are the most effective and various ways that is accomplished.

Quote:

An exceptionally tough defensive player, Johnson-Odom may not have great size for the shooting guard position at 6'2, but teams will value his scoring instincts and ability to compensate for his height with his 6'7 wingspan on the defensive end.

Three Point Attempts Per-40 Minutes Pace Adjusted

Name Team League 3pa/40p
Casper Ware Long Beach State NCAA 9
Terrell Stoglin Maryland NCAA 8.9
Damian Lillard Weber State NCAA 8.1
Marcus Denmon Missouri NCAA 8
Dee Bost Mississippi St. NCAA 7.2
J'Covan Brown Texas NCAA 7.1
Darius Johnson-Odom Marquette NCAA 6.7

Three Point Attempts Per Field Goal Attempt

Name Team League 3PA/FGA
Casper Ware Long Beach State NCAA 0.56
Terrell Stoglin Maryland NCAA 0.44
Damian Lillard Weber State NCAA 0.46
Marcus Denmon Missouri NCAA 0.56
Dee Bost Mississippi St. NCAA 0.53
J'Covan Brown Texas NCAA 0.41
Darius Johnson-Odom Marquette NCAA 0.43
Quote:

Approximately 7 attempts beyond 20'. Only notable lottery pick Lilliard shows more. The statistic is a reflection of Johnson-Odom has a shooter/scorer, rather than midrange player or someone aggressive attacking the basket. Odom averaged 13.8 field goal attempts the previous season, so almost half of his shots are past 20'. Space creator. Perimeter threat.

Even more impressive, is the fact that he's not just a catch and shoot player, but someone who will take that 20' J after 1-2 dribbles to pull up, with near equal efficiency.

Free Throw Attempts Per-40 Minutes Pace Adjusted

Tony Wroten Washington NCAA 9.3
Damian Lillard Weber State NCAA 9.1

Jared Cunningham Oregon State NCAA 7.9
Tu Holloway Xavier NCAA 7.9
Terrell Stoglin Maryland NCAA 7.6
Maalik Wayns Villanova NCAA 6.3
Austin Rivers Duke NCAA 6.3
Tyshawn Taylor Kansas NCAA 6

J'Covan Brown Texas NCAA 5.9
Kostas Sloukas Olympiakos GREECE 5.8
Andrew Albicy Gravelines FRANCE 5.6
Dee Bost Mississippi St. NCAA 5.5
Darius Johnson-Odom Marquette NCAA 5.5
Quote:

Not a frequent driver to the basket, and it shows considering the numbers adjusted for free throw attempts. This is where having quickness (good to elite level), ball-handling ability (good to elite level), and strength start to show as a reflection of drawing contact because defenses cannot keep up. Tack on the fact that Odom is not a natural playmaker, while Rivers, Taylor, Lilliard, and Wroten are, and it shows how making teammates a threat increases ability to get to the FT line as well.

True shooting percentage

Name Team League TS%
Kostas Sloukas Olympiakos GREECE 70%
Kostas Sloukas Olympiakos EUROLEAGUE 69%
Damian Lillard Weber State NCAA 64%
Doron Lamb Kentucky NCAA 63%
Marcus Denmon Missouri NCAA 63%
Scott Machado Iona NCAA 61%
Tu Holloway Xavier NCAA 60%
Andrew Albicy Gravelines FRANCE 60%
Andrew Albicy Gravelines EUROCUP 60%
Jared Cunningham Oregon State NCAA 58%
Bradley Beal Florida NCAA 58%
Tyshawn Taylor Kansas NCAA 58%
Darius Johnson-Odom Marquette NCAA 57%
Dion Waiters Syracuse NCAA 57%
Quote:

Odom utilizes his 3pt. ability to tack onto his true shooting percentage. However, when a player is an efficient shooter who can get to the line, you get players like Lillard at 64%, which is considered off the chart.

Assists Per-40 Minutes Pace Adjusted

Darius Johnson-Odom Marquette NCAA 3.1
Jared Cunningham Oregon State NCAA 3
Bradley Beal Florida NCAA 2.6
Marcus Denmon Missouri NCAA 2.4
Austin Rivers Duke NCAA 2.4
Terrell Stoglin Maryland NCAA 2.3
Doron Lamb Kentucky NCAA 1.9

Bottom 7.

Assist to Turnover Ratio

Darius Johnson-Odom Marquette NCAA 1.16
Nemanja Nedovic Red Star ADRIATIC 1.14
Bradley Beal Florida NCAA 1.05
Jared Cunningham Oregon State NCAA 0.99
Tony Wroten Washington NCAA 0.98
Tomas Satoransky Sevilla ACB 0.98
Austin Rivers Duke NCAA 0.9
Terrell Stoglin Maryland NCAA 0.87
Quote:

This is the most reflective of SF skill in a PG body in Odom's case. 1:1 is good for PFs, SFs, and Cs, while guards are considered good in the modern NBA to have 2:1 or 3:1.

Player Efficiency Rating

Damian Lillard Weber State NCAA 33.8
Dion Waiters Syracuse NCAA 26.1

Marcus Denmon Missouri NCAA 25.6
Terrell Stoglin Maryland NCAA 23.9
Scott Machado Iona NCAA 23.3
J'Covan Brown Texas NCAA 22.9
Tu Holloway Xavier NCAA 22.1
Bradley Beal Florida NCAA 22
Jared Cunningham Oregon State NCAA 21.8

Kostas Sloukas Olympiakos GREECE 21.6
Maalik Wayns Villanova NCAA 21
Dee Bost Mississippi St. NCAA 20.6
Tony Wroten Washington NCAA 20.2
Darius Johnson-Odom Marquette NCAA 19.9
Casper Ware Long Beach State NCAA 19.8
Tyshawn Taylor Kansas NCAA 19.5
Andrew Albicy Gravelines FRANCE 19.4
Doron Lamb Kentucky NCAA 19.1
Kostas Sloukas Olympiakos EUROLEAGUE 18.9
Kendall Marshall North Carolina NCAA 17.1
Austin Rivers Duke NCAA 16.8
Andrew Albicy Gravelines EUROCUP 15.4
Marquis Teague Kentucky NCAA 13
Nemanja Nedovic Red Star ADRIATIC 11.5
Tomas Satoransky Sevilla ACB 10
Quote:

Strong PER considering his offensive abilities. Overall it shows that his impact will be his perimeter scoring instincts, not attacking the basket, not midrange game, not playmaking, and not forcing turnovers on the defensive end or rebounding.

There in lies his greatest NBA level skill.

Perimeter play around the 20' mark.
