Quote: | Lakers Waiting on Nash and Harmony
By HARVEY ARATON

There should be no mystery as to why Mike D’Antoni has been speaking of his absent and ethereal point guard with palms upturned and eyes heavenly cast. He needs Steve Nash — his spiritual other — to hurry up and play point god or everyone connected to the Lakers will soon face the wrath of Lord Kobe Bryant.

The Lakers are anxious for Steve Nash to return from a injury to help with their offense, but the team's troubles are deeper than that.
While the Nash-less Lakers may never be stamped a poorly constructed disaster, an abject failure or simply what the early-season standings reveal them to be — in the mediocre middle of the Western Conference pack — there is no darker late-night television than basketball’s Boardwalk Empire, West Coast Chapter.
The clock is ticking. Kobe is steaming. Few other Lakers are shooting.
Didn’t LeBron James and the Miami Heat struggle for fluidity in their first season together before galvanizing and torpedoing the East on the way to the 2011 finals? Well, not quite the way the Lakers have begun the season, killing off their coach (Mike Brown) after five measly episodes, losing 10 of their first 18 games, looking like a would-be behemoth on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
Nash, who fractured his left fibula in the second game of the season and said the other day that he still could not run, may yet become the Lakers’ offensive glue, the link to a harmonious relationship between Bryant and Dwight Howard. |

For 24 minutes Tuesday night in Houston, it appeared the Lakers were on the verge of bouncing back from a mortifying loss to Orlando with a blowout win over a Rockets squad with consecutive home wins under its belt. After 36 minutes, it seemed the Lakers would simply have to settle for a comfortable win. After 43 minutes, a respectable, if less impressive, single-digit victory. After 47 minutes, a dogfight squeaker W.
And after 48 minutes, they settled instead for an 8-10 record and heads shaken in disbelief.
On the plus side, the Lakers have an immediate opportunity to get back on a winning track against a Hornets squad missing key players and fairly thin even at full strength. On the minus side, a win over a 5-11 squad can't even remotely be taken for granted. Either way, they'll lace up the sneaks and give it a run. |

Quote: | Lakers’ Steve Blake has abdominal surgery to repair torn muscle
By Associated Press, Updated: Wednesday, December 5, 3:19 PM
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Lakers guard Steve Blake underwent successful surgery to repair a torn abdominal muscle on Wednesday.
The team says he’s expected to be out six to eight weeks. Blake has been out of action since Nov. 12, adding to the Lakers’ point guard woes with Steve Nash also out with a leg injury.

Pregame
The Lakers play on their second consecutive night Wednesday, visiting the New Orleans Hornets after a loss in Houston. Pau Gasol will sit again to rest his knees (tendinitis) while the Hornets will be without rookie center Anthony Davis (ankle) and veteran guard Eric Gordon (knee).
Forward Ryan Anderson and point guard Greivis Vasquez have played very well for the Hornets. The team has been competitive but closing out games has been difficult.
The Lakers have struggled, especially when teams intentionally foul Dwight Howard repeatedly in the fourth quarter. It's a game the Lakers really need to win but the Hornets will not make that easy. |

Quote: | Preview: Lakers at Hornets
By Eric Pincus
December 5, 2012, 6:20 a.m.
In danger of losing a third straight game, the Lakers (8-10) visit the New Orleans Hornets (5-11) Wednesday night.
After a miserable fourth quarter against the Orlando Magic at Staples Center, with the Lakers yielding 40 points, the team fell apart in the final frame on Tuesday in Houston against the Rockets.
The Hornets have a poor record but have won two of their last four including solid victories over the Clippers on the road and at home against the Milwaukee Bucks. Rookies Anthony Davis (ankle) and Eric Gordon (knee) are not expected to play.
For the Lakers, Pau Gasol is likely to sit out as well, resting his knees (tendinitis).
Key matchup

X-factor
New Orleans has a young point guard who is having a strong under-the-radar season. Greivis Vasquez is averaging 13 points and 8.7 assists a night. He organizes the Hornets' offense and has done an admirable job keeping the team in games. |

As the Lakers lose game after game, what will it take to get Steve Nash back on the court?
Nash is recovering from a non-displaced leg fracture that took him out of the team's second game of the season. The Lakers are now 8-10 on the season, losing five of their last seven.
Nash has increased his activity but still hasn't practiced with the team. He's accompanying the Lakers on their current road trip but isn't expected to play.
Normally, a coach wants an injured player to get a full practice in before greenlighting a return. Coach Mike D'Antoni is still feeling out the situation.
"I don't know," D'Antoni said earlier in the week. "I can't see in the immediate future him coming right, but I could see him coming back in a week or so." |

Quote: | Lakers' Blake has surgery
Published December 05, 2012
Sports Network
El Segundo, CA – Los Angeles Lakers guard Steve Blake had successful surgery to repair a torn abdominal muscle on Wednesday.
Blake will miss about 6-to-8 weeks of action. The surgery was performed in Los Angeles by Dr. Craig Smith.
Blake has not played since Nov. 11 due to the injury. The veteran had been serving as the team's starting point guard with two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash still out indefinitely with a small non-displaced fracture in the head of his fibula.
In seven games prior to the injury, Blake averaged 5.1 points, 3.4 assists and 1.3 steals. The 32-year-old owns career averages of 6.9 points and 3.9 assists over 10 NBA seasons, the last three of which have come with the Lakers.
Second-year pro Darius Morris has been starting at the point for Los Angeles and is expected to remain in that role until Nash returns. |

Quote: | Lakers promised Nash they wouldn't trade Gasol
Pau Gasol has certainly made some headlines in the NBA this season, but not the sort of headlines a player aspires for. Gasol has struggled to adapt to new head coach Mike D'Antoni's offense, and has also dealt with troublesome knees throughout the season thus far. As a result, Gasol's name is now popping up in trade rumors with numerous teams around the league. Some say he may go to New York for Amar'e Stoudemire, while others speculate that he may be shipped to New Orleans for Ryan Anderson. Recent reports, however, suggest that Gasol won't be going anywhere.
A source tells Ric Bucher of CSN Bay Area that the Lakers promised Steve Nash that they would not trade Gasol when Nash signed with the team this past offseason. It's reasonable that Nash would want Gasol on his team, as Gasol is a good passer, knock-down mid-range shooter, and a nice counterpart for Nash in the pick and roll. We've yet to see the tandem's full potential, however, as Nash hurt his leg in the second game of the season and has yet to return to the court. |

Quote: | Lakers star Kobe Bryant reaches 30,000 career points milestone against New Orleans Hornets
By John Reid, NOLA.com

Lakers star Kobe Bryant became the youngest player at 34 years old to reach the 30,000 career points milestone Wednesday night in the second quarter against the New Orleans Hornets.
Bryant came into the game 13 points shy of the milestone after scoring a game-high 39 points Tuesday night in a loss to the Houston Rockets. He is currently ranks fifth on the all-time NBA career scoring list behind Walt Chamberlain, who is fourth with 31,419 points. Kareem Abdul Jabber is the NBA's all-time career scoring leader with 38,387 points.
Bryant reached the milestone with 1:16 remaining in the second quarter when he made a runner in the lane over Hornets center Robin Lopez. He gave no reaction after making the shot other than hustling to get back on defense with the Lakers trailing the 45-40. Despite the starting the game missing his first two shots, Bryant had 17 points by halftime.
``I think Kobe is a talent and competitor,'' said NBA Commissioner David Stern, who attended Wednesday night's game at the New Orleans Arena. ``He’s up there on the pedestal with Michael Jordan. He’s one of the greatest.''

Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni defends Howard during free-throw woes

Mike D'Antoni will stick with Dwight Howard late in games. (Getty Images)
Perhaps, you've noticed that Dwight Howard has been going to the free-throw line a lot in the fourth quarters of games recently.
Normally, people would complain about superstar calls when a player is averaging four free-throw attempts per fourth quarter. It's something that hasn't been done since Shaquille O'Neal averaged four free throws per fourth quarter in the 2001-02 season. That season, Shaq made 56.2 percent of his fourth-quarter free throws. It wasn't a great show of accuracy by any means, but it was higher than his 55.5 percent for the season.
Howard is averaging 4.3 attempts per fourth quarter, and he's making just 42.5 percent of them. Teams are regularly going to the Hack-a-Howard now and feasting on poor defensive rotations on the other end of the floor. So is it possible that coach Mike D'Antoni will bench Howard to avoid these situations at the free-throw line?
Via LA Times:
Lakers Coach Mike D'Antoni was incredulous when a reporter relayed a question from Lakers fans who wondered why D'Antoni didn't remove Howard from the game.
"Because they have no clue what they're talking about," D'Antoni said. "It's pretty simple. You don't do that to a guy and he made his foul shots. He's not the reason that our defense breaks down. He's not the reason that stuff happens. He's got to work through this.
"If you take him out now, then what are you going to do? Are you going to take him out all the time? You've got a player who's going to be your franchise player, you don't do that to him. And it's not him that's causing the problem." |

Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant youngest player in NBA history to eclipse 30,000 career points
Wilt Chamberlain was 35 when he hit the mark, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone were each 36 and Michael Jordan was 38

Kobe Bryant has plenty to celebrate with Lakers fans: passing 30,000 career points and a win over the Hornets.
NEW ORLEANS — At 34 years old, Kobe Bryant has become the youngest player in NBA history to eclipse 30,000 career points and only the fifth overall to hit that mark.
Bryant entered the elite scoring club during the first half of the Los Angeles Lakers’ game against the New Orleans Hornets. He arrived in New Orleans 13 points short, and scored his 13th and 14th points on a short jumper with 1:16 to go in the first half. |

Quote: | Bryant eclipses 30,000, Lakers beat Hornets 103-87
BRETT MARTEL | December 6, 2012 12:19 AM EST |
NEW ORLEANS — Before Kobe Bryant had even turned in his latest dominant performance, NBA Commissioner David Stern sought him out to offer a congratulatory hand shake for the extraordinary scoring milestone the Lakers star was about to surpass.
Stern assumed Bryant would score the 13 points he needed to become only the fifth player in NBA history to reach 30,000, and who wouldn't?
Bryant had 17 points by halftime, finished with 29, and Los Angeles snapped a two-game skid with a 103-87 victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday night.
"He just congratulated me and told me I was one of the best competitors that he's seen in this game and I really appreciated that," Bryant said of his pregame exchange with Stern.
Now Bryant in is elite company. The only other players to score more than 30,000 are Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain.
"It's pretty awesome," Bryant said. "These are players I respect tremendously and obviously grew up idolizing and watching and learned a great deal from." |
