Lakers end road trip in Philly
Published December 16, 2012
Sports Network
The Los Angeles Lakers can salvage a split of a four-game road trip Sunday night with a win over the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Lakers needed a win on Friday at Washington to have any chance at a .500 excursion. They fell to the Cavaliers on Tuesday and the Knicks on Thursday, but a 102-96 victory over the Wizards stopped the bleeding a bit.
Los Angeles has dropped six of its last eight as the search for an identity under new head coach Mike D'Antoni continues. Pau Gasol will be out again with knee tendinitis and Steve Nash may return to practice next week as he recovers from a leg injury suffered in the first game of the season.
The win against the team with the worst record was welcomed. Kobe Bryant went for 30 points on Friday and became the third player in NBA history over the age of 34 to have five straight games over 30 points, joining Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.[/b]

Preview: Lakers at Sixers

By Eric Pincus

December 16, 2012, 6:35 a.m.

The Lakers visit the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday night, playing their third of four on the road. This is the first meeting between the Lakers and Sixers since the Dwight Howard/Andrew Bynum/Andre Iguodala trade that landed Howard in Los Angeles.

Bynum is a Sixer in name but has yet to play, struggling with knee issues. Philadelphia may not have point guard Jrue Holiday, who is a game-time decision after a foot injury.

The Sixers (12-11) are currently eighth in the Eastern Conference after losing two straight. The Lakers (10-14) are 12th in the West, finally ending a four-game losing streak Saturday against the Washington Wizards.

Both teams need a win. If Holiday sits, the Lakers may have a better chance given the absence of Steve Nash (leg), Pau Gasol (knees) and Steve Blake (abdominal surgery).

Key Matchup

Unfortunately the obvious Howard/Bynum matchup will have to wait. Howard vs. Lavoy Allen just doesn't light up the marquee.

Lakers-76ers Preview

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD (STATS Writer) | The Associated Press

Despite the efforts of the NBA's scoring leader, the Los Angeles Lakers have sputtered along without their starting point guard.
The Philadelphia 76ers also struggled without their top playmaker last time out, and could be without him again.
While the Lakers try to win back-to-back games for the first time in nearly four weeks, the host 76ers look to avoid their first three-game skid when the teams meet Sunday night.
Philadelphia native Kobe Bryant, who tops the league at 29.3 points per game, scored 30 on 9-of-29 shooting as Los Angeles (10-14) snapped a four-game losing streak with Friday's 102-96 win at Washington.
Bryant hasn't received much help from the point guard spot while starter Steve Nash and reserve Steve Blake have been out with injuries. Nash (broken leg) has appeared in only two games, and is expected to return to practice next week. Blake (pulled abdominal) isn't likely to be back until at least late January.

Lakers come to Philadelphia as an under-.500 mess

Marc Narducci, Inquirer Staff Writer
POSTED: Sunday, December 16, 2012, 1:57 AM
WASHINGTON - Has it come to this?

After Friday night's 102-96 win over the woebegone Washington Wizards at the Verizon Center, Kobe Bryant couldn't contain his excitement.

"I actually am happy to win one damn game," the Los Angeles Lakers superstar said, laughing.

And he wasn't kidding.

That win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Lakers, who take a 10-14 record into the Wells Fargo Center to face the 76ers at 6 p.m. Sunday.

A team that won back-to-back NBA titles as recently as 2009 and 2010 was happy for a win over a Wizards team that has played all year without injured guard John Wall and fell to 3-17 heading into Saturday's game at Miami.

That shows the fortunes of the Lakers, who, despite their struggles, continue to be one of the most popular teams in professional sports.

Even the bigwigs want to be associated with Bryant and the Lakers. After Thursday night's 116-107 loss at Madison Square Garden to the New York Knicks, civil rights activist Jesse Jackson was in the Lakers' locker room, doing his best to boost their spirits in what was a losing battle.

Jrue Holiday remains a game-time decision for the 76ers in tonight’s matchup at the Wells Fargo Center against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Holiday missed his first game of the season during Friday’s 95-85 loss at Indiana with a sprained left foot. A team official said this morning that Holiday did light shooting during the team’s shootaround.

If Holiday is unable to play, Even Turner will again move over to point guard. Turner insists that his approach doesn’t change even if his position does.

“I come out and play the same I always play,” Turner said after today’s shootaround. “I come out aggressive, play defense, rebound and try to get my teammates involved.

Thanks Cha*n.

Winning tonight will mean 2 straight W's ... which has been a long time coming.

Nice way to end the trip.

Sixers are pretty good at home though.

Welcome and hope we win. They'll be without Bynum and Jrue Holiday their PG. We better win.

Andrew Bynum sees flaws in Lakers' offense

December 16, 2012, 3:09 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA — Put Andrew Bynum among the growing list of people with a negative opinion of the Lakers' offense.

"I just think maybe their offense is a little too high-tempo for them," the Philadelphia 76ers center said. "I think they're a much better team if they slow down and post the ball."

Bynum had some advice for Dwight Howard before the Lakers played Philadelphia on Sunday.

"I think Dwight's a great player, but he's going to have to get accustomed to playing with Kobe [Bryant], obviously, and not touching the ball every single play," Bynum said.

Bynum said Bryant helped him "tremendously" earlier in his career. But the 7-footer wanted the ball more often in the post as he gradually improved as a player. It didn't always happen.

"Later I thought I was able to get the ball more and do more things with the ball, so I could definitely see how at the end it could stunt growth," he said.

Still, Bynum was an All-Star last season for the first time, averaging 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds.

He was with the Lakers for seven seasons before being traded to Philadelphia in August in the four-team trade that brought Howard to the Lakers.

Bynum, 25, is in the last year of a contract paying him $16 million this season. He has not played yet for the 76ers because of bone bruises in his knees. He has battled knee trouble numerous times in his career and will see a specialist Thursday for the latest update on his condition. The 76ers have ruled him out indefinitely.

Lakers top Sixers, 111-98, for second straight road win
Kobe Bryant scores 34, his sixth straight game with 30 or more points.

Lakers 111 - Sixers 98 (final)

The Lakers played a loose brand of basketball in Philadelphia on Sunday, taking advantage of a Sixers squad playing without their point guard (Jrue Holiday) and center (Andrew Bynum). The Lakers have a little more experience to this point without Steve Nash and Pau Gasol, although not much to show for it in record.

Metta World Peace was a force, scoring 19 points, pulling down a career-high 16 rebounds, blocking two shots and collecting four steals.

Kobe Bryant led the way with 34, his sixth straight game with 30 or more points. As a team, the Lakers shot 48.8% from the field but dominated the game at the line with 19 makes in 24 tried (79.2%). The Lakers also hit 14 three-pointers at a 41.2% clip.

The Sixers got 30 points from Nick Young while shooting 49.4% as a team. Four players scored in double figures: Evan Turner (16), Spencer Hawes (16), Thaddeus Young (14) and Young.

In addition to Bryant and World Peace, the Lakers had four more in double figures: Dwight Howard (17), Darius Morris with a career high 15, Chris Duhon (14) and Jodie Meeks (12).

The Lakers sat Jordan Hill with back spasms in addition to Steve Blake, Nash and Gasol.
