Steve Nash Injury: 5 Ways the Lakers' G Will Make an Immediate Impact

By Michael C. Jones | Yahoo! Contributor Network

With Steve Nash set to potentially return on Christmas Day, the Los Angeles Lakers will finally show the world what their team looks like near full strength.
The Lakers have too many issues for one man to solve, especially when that one man is a 38-year-old point guard who's well past his prime and dealing with a host of nagging injuries. In fact, there isn't a phrase in the Lakers' lexicon more dangerous than "when Nash gets back". It's been a crutch and a poor excuse for why this team's played the way they have at 12-14 and 7.5 games back of the division lead.
The Lakers are a mess, and it doesn't take a savvy basketball fan to understand that. Too often, Nash has been touted as the hero lying in wait for this team in despair. Head coach Mike D'Antoni's gone on record saying as much on numerous occasions. But the Lakers acquired Nash for a reason, and there are several things he can do to help right away.
He's not a cure-all, but he will make the Lakers better. Here's how:

Heat Watching as Lakers Story Unfolds

By Jeff Caplan

DALLAS – The Miami Heat are the NBA’s resident experts on manufactured super teams, and don’t think they’re not watching the latest model to this point wheezing along on the West Coast.
“You can’t do nothing but watch it,” Dwyane Wade said of the struggling Los Angeles Lakers. “It’s everywhere.”
Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh joined forces in Miami during the summer of 2010 and uniquely understand the expectations and pressures currently weighing heavily on Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol and the soon-to-return Steve Nash.
It’s a group that didn’t come together through prearranged handshakes like the Heat’s Big Three, but rather through an opportunistic Lakers front office that flipped assets into an awesome collection of talent that many instantly predicted would return the Lakers to the Finals and challenge the Heat for league supremacy.
However, this Hollywood script has spilled over with unforeseen drama — injuries, a messy coaching change and even now with confusion and back-and-forth rhetoric over roles in Mike D’Antoni’s newly implemented system.

Kobe Bryant's shot selection the same as in Lakers Successful years

Sporting News

You’ve seen the numbers on the Los Angeles Lakers this season: First there’s Kobe Bryant’s impressive averages of 29.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.0 assists. Then there’s the fact Los Angeles (12-14) is 4-11 when Bryant takes 20 or more shots in a game.

Both figures have been bent in various ways, with some pointing toward Bryant’s ball-chucking mentality as a strain on the Lakers’ all-star roster. For those who subscribe to this notion, the kicker is always this: Los Angeles is 8-3 when Bryant shoots fewer than 20 times.

ESPN.com’s Chris Broussard recently took a look at Bryant’s numbers, enlisting the opinions of a general manager, a coach and two scouts. His unnamed sources collectively conclude Bryant’s shot selection has hurt the Lakers.

Problem is, Bryant’s shooting numbers remain where they always have been, which includes the five seasons he won championship rings. As the Los Angeles Times points out, Bryant's shot attempts per game (20.7) is actually lower than it was last season (23.0).

The strongest evidence to refute the idea Bryant is shooting the Lakers out of games comes from the 2009 and 2010 championship seasons, when Bryant shot 20.9 and 21.5 shots, respectively. Even with Shaquille O’Neal on his team, Bryant averaged 20 shots per game over the course of his first three championship seasons.

Metta World Peace believes he's stronger than most power forwards

By Eric Pincus
December 21, 2012, 2:36 p.m.
Lakers Coach Mike D'Antoni is experimenting with his lineup, moving Metta World Peace, who had started in the team's first 25 games, to the bench in Tuesday's win over the Charlotte Bobcats.

D'Antoni's rationale is to give World Peace the team's primary minutes at power forward behind Pau Gasol. Depending on the situation, that would shift Kobe Bryant to small forward and give Jodie Meeks an opportunity to start.

"I'm stronger than most power forwards in the NBA anyway, it doesn't really matter," said World Peace of the position change. "There's only a couple of power forwards that are, 'Alright, he's a real power forward. He's really strong.'"

World Peace takes pride in his versatility and said he's willing to come off the bench if it helps the team win games.

"I can play any position," he said. "I can guard point guards better than most point guards."

Lakers' rotation continues to evolve

By Eric Pincus
December 21, 2012, 7:14 p.m.
As Coach Mike D'Antoni tries to find a combination of players that will complement the Dwight Howard/Pau Gasol frontcourt, he's made it clear that he's willing to experiment with the Lakers' rotation.

D'Antoni has already moved Metta World Peace to the bench, giving him the backup minutes at power forward instead of Antawn Jamison.

"Right now, the problem is we've got a little bit of a logjam at four. We might try to move [Jamison] back to three a little bit and see, but I really like Metta at the four right now," D'Antoni said. "If you're trying to rotate Pau, Metta and Dwight, who all command a lot of minutes, that leaves very little minutes for anybody else. It's tough."

Jamison isn't the only frontcourt player forced out of the rotation.

"Jordan Hill, I've got him there too," said the Lakers coach. "Those are guys that I'd like to see and work through, but right now, today, Dwight, Pau and Metta are going to take the lion's share of the minutes."
