That is kind of the sad thing. This team has a ton of $$$ to spend but they can't spend it on the players like they used to.
The CBA along with a Calif Tax Code make LA a tougher place to attract top talent. |
Well. I guess for example, look at the Kobe extension. Part of it was simply a business decision, which factored TWC as well. Need Kobe to get the viewers was part of the decision too. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

One could also say it started when Jim Buss fired his longtime employees during the lockout. & if Dr. Buss was the good ole Doc everyone claimed he was, why did he stand for that to happen esp. since some of those employees were scouts when Doc Buss bought the team from JKC. |

For Doc Buss, maybe he felt the timing was right for dear-faithful-son-Jim to take on a bigger role in decisions going forward and he probably wasn't going to step in unless it was absolutely necessary.
With the TWC contract signed, the future was secure and his kids wouldn't have to worry about estate taxes or money issues for the foreseeable future. Jim was finally seeing his vision come true: the purging of (bleeep) Phil and anyone associated with him, cutting off Mitch's right hand man, getting his own coach, getting his own coach's dvds, and all of the new personnel that would answer to him.
Once all of that was in place, it was time to swing for the fences and get Cp3.
The rest is history. |

That's when it truly started. Nothing has gone right since then. Bad karma. |

The funny thing was that I tuned into the new Time Warner Dodgers channel the other day, and they did the same crap they did with the Lakers commercials, with the slow motion, and epic music. I honestly am fearing for the Dodgers right now. At least they have good management.

Bingo.. Im glad someone still remembers. In an attempt to make "cost" cutting moves lakers fired several long term employees, trainers, including ronnie lester. I remember when that happened, was thinking along the lines that karma was gonna hit the lakers sooner or later. _________________ Pain is temporary, at the end of pain is success... |

+1
Everything starts on the basketball side. It has nothing to do with "curses" from a cable deal or from ending legitimate contracts. Kevin Ding had an article some time ago where he explained that the employees were not fired outright. The Lakers offered to renew their contracts, but they had to take a paycut, since the lockout was looming and no-one knew how long that would last. They refused, the Lakers let them go. Not the classiest business decision, but an understandable cost-cutting move. And didn't the Lakers bring back some of those very employees when the season restarted? How come that didn't "undo"the curse??
But seriously, how many franchises would be "cursed" by how badly they treated their staff, or how Machiavellian they were in their dealings? The Lakers current demise is the result of one thing only: when they traded their aging star for an young, talented upgrade the league blocked it. Undo that Chris Paul veto and we're not looking at the abyss into which we've fallen. |

^ FWIW the Heat also fired a lot of their staff during the lockout.
Then they went to 3 straight Finals and won 2. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

Easy to blame it on stuff like curses, but the fact is TWC signed on as the Lakers official TV home at the end of Kobe's career, not to mention the end of this current iteration of the Lakers team. So its no surprise they are this bad, its because they are in a transition phase between the end of this squad and the next iteration of the Lakers team.Remember they have a 20 year contract, so this is just year 2. If it was year 10 and the Lakers are still not going anywhere, then I would be worried at that point as a TWC/Comcast exec. |

Hey, everyone wanted their money. The Lakers. Kobe. But I'm not faulting that for the "curse."
We had a great run, an unbelievable one with Kobe in the past 18 years. Things have to wind down. We have a chance to rebuild in the next 2 years or so. Things will have to get better. Last night was a new rock bottom. Getting embarassed against our hometown...yes, rival.
But I believe competition is good. It'll hopefully motivate the FO to expeditiously but smartly rebuild. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

When the Buss family is going deep into luxury and repeater tax hell down the road with a worthwhile championship contending team, maybe we'll laud the TWC deal. Then again, I have to buy League Pass to watch the lakers anyways. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

100% agree. TWC is a piece of crap. Why would I want to watch a replay of them losing! That's just dumb! |
