Hobbled Lakers still a threat

The Lakers return to Houston with a three-game losing streak and three key frontcourt players -Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol and Jordan Hill – all out. But the Rockets said they would have to think of the Lakers as the team they were expected to be.

“They’re a great team,” Toney Douglas said before the injuries were announced. “They’re struggling right now. But we have to go in still with a mindset they’re the best team in the league. We have to be on point. Any night they can step up and bring it. We have to make sure we stay consistent with what we do.”

L.A. Lakers in total disarray, with injuries to Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol and Jordan Hill: Smith
Published on Tuesday January 08, 2013

By Doug Smith
Sports Reporter

The Lakers seem to be suffering in relative silence

I remember sitting in the Lakers practice facility near the end of training camp as part of my visit with Steve Nash.

The tape recorder was off, we were just shooting the breeze about family and friends and just telling tales and he looked quite content as he said:

“I think this is going to be fun.”

Oh, what a difference less than three months makes.

Given the expectations and the roster, there is not a team more disappointing than the Lakers anywhere in the league, nor one in more disarray.

IN FOCUS: KOBE BRYANT FEUDS

By Colin Becht

Kobe and Lakers big men just can’t seem to get along. First Shaq, and now, reportedly, Dwight Howard. SI.com looks back at Bryant’s greatest feuds.

Shaquille O’Neal: Three NBA titles couldn’t keep the lid on this epic feud. Beginning with Bryant’s rookie season in 1996, and continuing throughout both players’ careers, the two traded barbs, often through the media. Following a disappointing 2002-03 season in which the Lakers were eliminated in the Western Conference semifinals, Bryant questioned O’Neal’s leadership ability and said that O’Neal was “blaming others for our team’s failure.” O’Neal was traded from the Lakers to the Heat a year later.

Lakers drama continues with injuries story of infighting

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – Negativity continued to bombard the stunningly unimpressive Los Angeles Lakers Monday.

From the training room . . . Center Dwight Howard has a torn labrum in his right shoulder and is out indefinitely, at least a week. Forward/center Pau Gasol has a concussion and will not make the Lakers' two-game Texas road trip. Neither will power forward Jordan Hill, who has an undiagnosed hip injury.

From Twitter . . . Lakers legend Magic Johnson was back at his keyboard Monday, and this year that has meant stinging criticism of coach Mike D'Antoni and many of the players. Monday's main points: "Dwight Howard has to stop complaining and start dominating on offense . . . Pau Gasol has to stop playing soft and get back to 18 points and 10 rebounds . . . Kobe Bryant is having an MVP type season but the team needs him to be a better leader."

Why is that article being posted? The feud was bogus, this is just another hatchet job piece.

Where do L.A. Lakers go from here?

1. Fact or Fiction: The Lakers will make the playoffs.

Lakers' Uncertain Future

Kevin Arnovitz, ESPN.com: Fiction. The question essentially is, "Will the Lakers finish ahead of Utah, Minnesota, Dallas and Portland?" Considering the injuries to Howard and Gasol and how lost the team is defensively, it feels as if the Lakers are drawing to an inside straight. Certainly not impossible, but increasingly unlikely.

Brett Koremenos, HoopSpeak: Fact. It will be a struggle, but I still think L.A. will beat out Utah, a Kevin Love-less Minnesota and Portland for the final spot in the West. That said, I wouldn't be totally shocked if a gritty Wolves team sneaks in ahead of the Lakers.

Because I don't edit the News. There probably wouldn't be any News if I put up what I like, lol. That's not true but you get the point surely.

I've thought of using a emoticon to warn. I'm open to ideas but will not stop posting what's available.

Thanks

What's up with Lakers and Celtics?

J.A. Adande and Israel Gutierrez are teaming up this season for a look at the NBA from two perspectives, called Coast to Coast.

GUTIERREZ
For your sake, J.A., I was hoping we wouldn't have to get into the Lakers' problems this week. Everyone needs a break from doom and gloom, right? But lo and behold, it has gotten worse.

First Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant take not-so-veiled jabs at each other, and then when it looks as though it's about to fall apart, bodies start to fall apart. Torn labrum for Howard. Concussion for Pau Gasol. No return dates set. No end in site for this season's mega-drama.

Lakers News: Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol Out Indefinitely After Sustaining Injuries vs. the Clippers and the Nuggets

In a season that has been riddled with bad breaks and misfortune, even more bad news struck the Los Angeles Lakers this week.
All-Stars Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol will be out for an indeterminable amount of time after the pair suffered injuries this past weekend in dual losses to Western Conference rivals the Clippers and Denver.
Howard tore the labrum in his right shoulder in the second half of Friday's 107-102 loss to the Clippers in Los Angeles when the Lakers' superstar center got his arms tangled with Clippers small forward Caron Butler.

While he played in Sunday's game against a 112-105 loss to Denver, he re-aggravated the injury and was examined Monday by team doctor Steve Lombardo, according to a statement on the Lakers' official website.

Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard Have Opportunity To Fix Los Angeles Lakers’ Off-Court Woes
Jan 8th, 2013 at 1:17 pm by Reece HookerLos Angeles Lakers
Home » Los Angeles Lakers » Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard have opportunity to fix Los Angeles Lakers’ off-court woes

The Los Angeles Lakers are a big disappointment this season. That’s been said by everyone from the anchors on SportsCenter and general manager Mitch Kupchak all the way down to your friends, family and work mates. They started the season with an ailing Dwight Howard, physically absent Steve Nash and a physically and mentally missing Pau Gasol en route to their current 15-18. Despite improved health, the Lakers have continued to stumble and it has left fans and analysts alike in shock. Rumors have began swirling about disharmony within the Lakers locker room, specifically the relationship with Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant – two men both known for being a disruptive force in the locker room seasons prior.

Lakers-Rockets Preview: Where To Watch Jeremy Lin Vs. Kobe Bryant, Prediction, Betting Odds

BY Anthony Riccobono | January 08 2013 5:05 PM
Just when it seemed like things couldn’t get any worse for the Los Angeles Lakers, they did.

Both of L.A.’s big men will miss, at least, the next couple of games with injuries. Dwight Howard is set to miss a week or two with a torn labrum. Gasol’s return is up in the air because of a concussion he suffered.

Heading into the season, the Lakers strength was expected to be their ability to start two dominant seven-footers in the frontcourt. Now, Los Angeles will have to make due with a few inexperienced players that will have to get major minutes.

Center Robert Sacre will be inserted into the starting lineup. He was recently called up from the D-League. Darius Morris will also be on the floor to begin games.

YouTube parody begs for a team that will trade for Pau Gasol

By Eric Pincus
January 8, 2013, 8:00 a.m.

BallerballFilms has posted a YouTube clip pleading with teams around the NBA to trade for Lakers forward/center Pau Gasol.

Set to the Sarah McLaughlin track "Angel," the clip parodies her campaign to prevent animal cruelty.

"Please trade for Pau Gasol, he's miserable in Los Angeles and needs your help," begs the video.

Gasol is currently sidelined with a concussion suffered in the Lakers' loss to the Denver Nuggets on Sunday.

Depleted Lakers take on soaring Rockets

Sports Network
9:48 a.m. CST, January 8, 2013

— Bad has gone to worse for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Already set to face a red-hot James Harden, the Lakers' frontcourt will be heavily shorthanded on Tuesday night against the streaking Houston Rockets.

Los Angeles looked to be hitting its stride under new head coach Mike D'Antoni, winning a season-high five straight from Dec. 14-25. However, the Lakers have lost three straight and four of five since to fall three games under .500 and learned on Monday they will be without center Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol for Tuesday night's game due to injury.

Lakers' Pau Gasol reexamined but not cleared for concussion

By Eric Pincus
January 8, 2013, 3:29 p.m.

The Lakers announced that Pau Gasol, who suffered a concussion Sunday in a loss to the Denver Nuggets, was reexamined Tuesday by neurologist Dr. Vern Williams.

Gasol was "not cleared to resume playing basketball," and will miss -- as expected -- the Lakers' visits to the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs on back-to-back nights.

Williams will evaluate Gasol again Thursday, ahead of the Lakers' Friday night game against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Staples Center.

The NBA has instituted a more rigorous concussion policy to help protect players. Until Gasol reaches his individual neurological baseline, set earlier in the season, he won't be cleared to play.

Recovering from a concussion can take days, weeks or in rare, extreme cases even months.

The Lakers also are without Dwight Howard (torn labrum), Jordan Hill (hip) and Steve Blake (abdominal surgery).

Rockets surge past hobbled Lakers for 5th straight win
10:40p.m. EST January 8

HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden scored 31 and Chandler Parsons added 20 to help the Houston Rockets pick up their fifth straight win, a 125-112 victory over the short-handed Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night

Houston trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half, but used a pair of runs in the third quarter to go on top and build a big lead.

BOX SCORE: Rockets 125, Lakers 112

Metta World Peace had a season-high 24 points for the Lakers, who were playing without their top three big men Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol and Jordan Hill — all out with injuries.

Kobe Bryant added 20 for the Lakers and Steve Nash had 16 as they tied a season-high with their fourth straight loss.

For Pau's sake I really hope someone trades for him, and he goes to a better team. He is miserable in LA and obviously the marriage is over...
