Apparently, Phil admits this in his book. Was diagnosed March, 2011...He's obviously fine now, but this is surprising to hear.

EL SEGUNDO – The last time the Lakers were down, 3-0, in a playoff series wasn't so long ago – no matter the boldly stated preference for Phil Jackson over Mike D'Antoni in the Twitter account of Dwight Howard's girlfriend and the "We want Phil!" chants at Staples Center on Friday night.

Phil will beat that prostate cancer in the Finals, too.

I think Phil is better off in retirement. He has had a great career and life. Don't need to go to the rigorous travel demands of the NBA even if he still has passion in it. Just relax and enjoy life even more.

Wow. And shortly after him revealing something so personal to the team, the team rolled over to Dallas, and Phil was hitting Gasol in the chest

an interesting thought moving forward is how Mitch and Jim deal with this. They're saving money with Mike Brown signing with the Cavs, but Mitch already publicly secured MDA's job with the Lakers next year. Though it probably isn't news to Mitch that certain players, including his future centerpiece is not thrilled with the idea of playing under MDA again next season.

WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO THIS TEAM?!?!?!

We need to let Dwight know that we back him 100% in getting this coach fired. Even if he intends to go elsewhere, just please give the team an ultimatum and don't sign a contract with another team until they fire MDA.

It's also interesting that Phil had the same cancer that killed Dr. Buss.

No it isn't. Jerry had Esophageal cancer, one of the deadliest.

edit: my bad, it was prostate.

Glad PJax is okay.

Crazy that there might have been something to the Gasol rumors that year.

And even crazier that he's pretty much asking to be traded if D'Antoni is still here next year.

Ok I definitely remember all the Pau's fiance cheating on him rumors... but SHANNON BROWN. LOL I don't know if I can believe that. Pau's head was definitely not in the game that season though for sure. Unfortunately... he hasn never recovered from that playoffs in terms of production.

The article said it had something to do with his family. Whatever it is he doesn't want to talk about it and it's none of our business.

It's a complete shock, I'm relieved that he's okay now.

After a tough series vs. NO, the announcement must've hit the team like a ton of bricks, there was an air of resignation after Game 2's home loss vs the Mavs. The culmination of Kobe bum knee/bum ankle, Bynum bone bruise, Pau's family issues, Phil's health, "trust issues", had all taken a toll on the team, at some point it was just too deep to dig out.

If you're male and get cancer prostate cancer is the one you want. Unless you get it when your pretty young most men won't die from it.

I had a Urologist tell me once that if they autopsied all men over the age of 75 on their death 80% would have some stage of prostate cancer.

that's a true stat, statcat.

Many more people die WITH prostate cancer than FROM it.

PostPosted: Sun Apr 28, 2013 12:21 pm    Post subject: Yahoo: Phil had prostate cancer during 2011 playoffs

Just saw this on Yahoo: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/phil-jackson-had-cancer-during-2011-playoffs-195022348.html

Quote:
The Los Angeles Lakers were in the middle of a 2011 second-round playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks when former coach Phil Jackson decided to tell the team that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer two months earlier.
Jackson talked about his condition, which was diagnosed in March 2011, and his announcement to the players in his upcoming book, "Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success."
According to a report in the Orange County Register, Jackson "sensed the team was lacking something" in the series with the Maverics when he revealed his news after consulting with captains Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher.

Quote:
"But then you also could understand certain moments of his demeanor, energy and involvement because of what he was going through health-wise,"Gasol said, according to the Register. "It explained certain things. It was a shock. A difficult moment for the team."
An emotional Jackson told the team that he had decided to delay surgery until after the season.
