|
|
Quote: | The Los Angeles Lakers, whose plan to re-sign center Dwight Howard did not pan out this offseason, are poised to rebuild fast by focusing on the two biggest free agents of 2014 -- LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, front office sources have told ESPN.
Opinions are split on whether the Lakers can actually land James or Anthony, with one source calling it "realistic" and another saying it was "far-fetched at this point." Nonetheless, the Lakers have made it clear they are positioning themselves for a run at one and perhaps even two of the superstars who could become free agents in 2014, by refusing to commit to any contract past this next season, multiple sources have said.
Dwyane Wade, Amare Stoudemire and Chris Bosh also have early termination options on the five-year deals they signed in the summer of 2010. Luol Deng, Danny Granger, Andrew Bogut and Dirk Nowitzki will be unrestricted free agents next summer.
James, of course, is the biggest prize. But unlike in 2009 when James' free agency options the following summer were on his mind, sources have told ESPN that James isn't even considering his 2014 decision yet.
"It's all wishful thinking at this point," a league source with knowledge of the situation told ESPN. "Teams are doing more wishing than LeBron is wanting right now. |

If the Lakers can get Melo and LeBron, that would diffenently throw a frenzy around the NBA Landscape. |

Pretty much. It is not a surprise if the Lakers also aim for them too. _________________ You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take. |

But, the Lakers do present lots of advantages that other teams don't have. |

This. Los Angeles Yankees anyone? I bleed Purple and Gold like most on here, but I have to admit it would be tough to root for those guys being on the roster. Just doesn't seem right in my opinion. _________________ "I have self-doubt. I have insecurity. I have fear of failure...everyone does. You don't deny it, but you also don't capitulate to it. lebron is NEVER going here. if he left miami, he is arrogant enough to believe he could win a ring in cleveland. he took a garbage roster once already to the finals, and with an improved roster(with kyrie and bynum) and experiance he could easily re-sign with them and give the city the first championship in 40+ years. we'd be hearing about him being more GOAT status even more so then now.
he would be proving nothing if he resigned with the lakers |

Their only legit shot was to re-sign Dwight and hope that the pull was sufficient to draw Lebron. With Carmelo ensconced in a major city that he apparently likes, and Lebron drawn to "super friends" teams, it seems like a long-shot. |

We should be aiming at Paul George instead. A lot more realistic and a hometown kid to boot. _________________ We only celebrate championships.

Having so much capspace has its pros and cons.
All that capspace will indeed allow us to go after the biggest unrestricted free agents.
However, with the new CBA, superstars will mostly stick to their original team until they become unrestricted around the age of 28/29. 24 year old superstars will be restricted, and the only way to acquire them is via trade, or sign-and-trade.
And that is exactly why having so much capspace is not as good as people think.
Sure, there are superstars that rely more on skill than athleticism, such as Carmelo Anthony, who should age more gracefully than others, and could do well with a max contract at age 29-33. But if you want to have a superstar in his prime, you're going to need to have valuable assets so that you can sign-and-trade for a restricted free agent superstar.
Without trade assets, you won't be able to convince a team that drafted the superstar to give you their player in a sign-and-trade. So with the new CBA rules, capspace is not the best way to get superstars.
It does allow you to get cheap role players, because the middle class free agents will dissappear. Think of players like Kyle Lowry, for instance. Not an all-star, but solid starting caliber players.
But if, for instance, the lakers want to go after John Wall in 2014, then that's unfortunate, because the lakers have no trade assets for a sign-and-trade (except for an expiring Nash?). If the lakers want to go after Kyrie Irving in 2015, then they would need to pick up players in 2014 on good deals, while not spending too much so as to be under the tax apron in order to be able to receive sign-and-trade players.
In order to get a superstar in his prime, you need to either draft him, or have great trade assets. And both require a great deal of luck. _________________ Kobe

He is a restricted free agent, any offer the Lakers make Indiana will match. No chance he comes here other than a sign and trade. _________________ One man's trash is another man's treasure. |

Far fetched as it may seem, so too was the notion that LBJ/Bosh/Wade would play together.
LA is one of the few teams that can theoretically sign both LBJ/Melo (but would have to probably renounce everyone).
Maybe LBJ/Melo want to play together. Who knows. If you had LBJ/Melo, you could easily put lots of smaller pieces around them with the remaining budget.
Still a .00001% chance. But it's still a chance. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

well sure a lot of teams are going after these two, but Lakers is only one of the few teams that can afford both. i have no doubt LeBron would at least entertain the thought of join team with Melo and finish up his career on one of the biggest stages of the world. |

The only reason he is available so early is because Minnesota did not give him a max extension. Perhaps because they did not think he was a franchise player. Perhaps because of his injuries. But yes, good suggestion. It just depends on whether or not the lakers will use all their capspace in 2014, or save some for 2015. _________________ Kobe |

It sounds so far fetched but I think you're on the money. Which teams can offer the market, prestige, and opportunity (salary cap position) to let Melo/LBJ play together.
In that scenario, I have to think Kobe will either retire or take a small salary to stay on the team. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

one of the factors that will prevent LeBron signing here is now that he has won a couple rings with D Wade, maybe he will try to win on on his own in order to prove he is indeed the best. if that's the case, he's heading to Cleveland. |
