Remember just 2 summers ago when Dallas only had Nowitzki and Marion basically under contract and had room to sign 2 max players?

http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/mavericks/post/_/id/4686644/deron-williams-to-dallas-looks-likely-dwight-howard-in-2013

That was the summer Dallas was going after both Dwight Howard and Deron Williams to pair him up with Dirk Nowitzki.

But that never happened because Dwight ended up staying with Orlando for a year, and Deron ended up staying in Brooklyn rather than going back to his hometown in Dallas with no State Tax to boot.

2012 - After losing out on both stars, Mavs then used up their huge cap space by signing players like OJ Mayo, Chris Kaman, and picking up Elton Brand eliminating 1 of their 2 max cap spaces.

2013 - After having only enough cap space to get just 1 max player, the Mavs again tried out to get Dwight Howard but lost. In the end, they used up all that remaining max cap space to just get Monta Ellis and Devin Harris and are now over the cap this season.

Actually, the worst case scenario is there's an earthquake and the entire Los Angeles basin falls into the ocean and there is no more Lakers and no more Los Angeles.

Oh, so that's how we do it eh?

Okay then, worst case scenario, a Meteorite as large as the moon crushes on the Earth and the planet blows up. Kaboom.

More likely WORST case scenarios: Kobe not recovering from his achilles, Mitch not returning after contract is up.

Worst case scenario as far as FA's would be Deng for 2014, Kobe has always wanted to play with him. He's still young 29 good defender and scorer. The one Superstar player im 100% certain will get is Kevin Love in 2015, he's made it known he wants to be a Laker.

The difference is that players actually want to play in LA.

You have a point, but there are a lot more quality FAs available in 2014 and 2015. I don't see guys like Aldridge, Love, and Rondo wanting to stick around for rebuilding projects/mediocrity(and worse). We'll get someone within the next 2 years.

You pair 2 of Aldridge/Love/Rondo with 2 or 3 5-7 mil guys and some minimum dudes and you're not mediocre.

It really depends. Aldridge + Lillard was mediocre and they were surrounded by some decent guys like Matthews and Batum. And Love has Rubio. So Aldridge/Rondo or Love/Rondo might be pretty mediocre, but you never know given the right system.

addition by subtraction.

That is, subtraction locker room negative-Dwight Howard, and on-court negative-Ron Artest.

Our defense WILL suffer greatly next year, but our Nash/Kobe/Gasol offense will look a lot better since we won't have to be catering to a black hole at the Center position anymore.

In fairness, Rondo is miles ahead of Rubio and way better than Lillard.

Also, 2 or 3 5-7 mil guys are a better supporting cast than what Blazers and Wolves had.

Oh wait, I forgot to mention resigning Kobe and possibly Pau for cheap.

2012 Dallas would be medium case. Bad because we missed the big name, but good because we didn't burn the cap room on undeserving players.

Interestingly 2013 Dallas is the worst case scenario, missing out on the one you want, and then wasting your cap space on guys who won't get you there.

We'll probably sign someone like Granger or Deng if we can't get our two big targets. If we don't get Melo or Lebron, I just hope that we don't screw up our cap situation by offering one of those two guys a huge contract. We should just wait for 2015 Free Agency if we can't get Melo or Lebron because there isn't anyone else who's worth it on the market that isn't an RFA.

Hey, just was thinking, based on your screen name and the facts that Dwight left and Nash is in your avatar, maybe you should change your name to Nashlight?

I've said many times that lakers will not be able to acquire any superstar come 2014, which superstar wants to come here and live under the shadow of Kobe and Jim Buss? People should really stop these FA discussions for the next three years, superstars will consider to come to LA after Kobe is long gone or organization starts to act as a coherent unit by making decisions based on knowledge and experience rather than emotion. The new CBA along with incentives other cities offer, superstars will not throw themselves to an organization who are experimenting with their options.
