i just checked Ryan kellys stats his rookie season and just realized that his rookie stats are the same as Dirk Nowitzki in his first season. he is also number 8 in rookies in terms of scoring.
I really think we have a steal here. |

I have no idea where he is going to get his minutes this upcoming season though. Randle and Boozer will split the bulk of the minutes at pf. And Kelly is not a center unless coach scott wants to try out some experimentation and that's a whole can of worms right there. |

RKell, love this guy just because he reminds me of one of my fav players of all time, Travis Knight. Congrats on the wedding buddy boy. _________________ "The best there is. The best there was. The best there ever will be.", said Bret Hart regarding the Los Angeles Lakers. |

I'm still confused as to why we picked up Boozer. |

I think it's time we had a Ryan Kelly thread.
I will be the first to admit I was really down on Ryan Kelly last season and going into the preseason. But I have to admit, that Ryan has brought his A game to training camp.
I don't know if he knew he was on the bubble and practiced his arse off during the offseason or maybe because he is getting the opportunity to play PF so far or maybe because his hamstring is healthy now, but he is making his shots so far and playing generally pretty well.
Ryan has also been blowing by people driving to the basket and last night he was rebounding pretty good. He always has been a good passer and smart player.
Based on his play during the pre season, I would think he may have earned a spot on this season's team, probably making Holmes expendable. Holmes is hardly even playing in the preseason, did he even have a legitimate chance of making the squad?
I don't think Ryan was an "unknown" (for lack of a better word) like Holmes. I think people said Ryan was projected as a first rounder except for his foot injuries. If this can be a breakout season for Ryan and he can play up to his potential, that could be another piece in the puzzle for the Lakers as the back up power forward. And maybe he can play some center too.
In:
1. Hibbert
2. Kelly
3. Randle
4. Bass
5. Young
6. Kobe
7. Clarkson
8. Russell
9. Lou Williams
Hopefully In:
10. Upshaw
11. Huertas
12. Nance
13. Black
14.
15.
Out:
1. Fraizer
2. Holmes
3. J. Brown
Hopefully out:
1. Sacre
On the bubble:
1. A. Brown
2. MWP (only because I would like to see him continue to mentor Randle and the other young players)
Have I left anyone out? |

I think we should keep Kelly now. I was down on him but I see how he will work well with someone like DLO and even as a small ball center. Just no more SF please. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

He's grown on me these past few games.
Reminds me of a poor man's dirk. Has some nice mobility for a near 7 footer, and knows how to read the offense and make the right cuts. D'Angelo found him for some nice buckets yesterday.
I didn't watch him last season, but people keep pointing to how he played the wrong position at the 3 He's really more of a stretch 4 or 5.
Luckily the league has changed to small ball and he'll be infinitely more useful in these upcoming seasons.
He's too promising of a prospect to cut. As someone said, if they cut him, some other team will pick him up and develop him into a solid player.

Kelly is showing things that I didn't know he was capable of. Getting to the basket easy - a little quicker than I thought he was. Decent backup pf if you ask me. Can stretch the floor with his shooting and his overall energy seems to be up.
But that hair band thing do?!?!?! |

I think Kelly made the team after yesterday.
I knew he had game, he played well in his first season. It's up to the coach to put him in a position where he can be effective, which is being a stretch four.
Byron killed his game last season, playing him as a 3. And he never seemed fully healthy last year. |

I honestly like what Ryan Kelly has given us so far this preseason more than Brandon Bass. No disrespect to Bass but I hope Kelly gets more playing time at the 4 than him or that we use Bass as a small ball center and keep Kelly at the 4. |

Kelly is useful when he's healthy, and that's been true for a long time.
It's that disturbing ratio of his healthy/injured days that makes me wonder about the value of using a roster slot for him again. He just seems ineffective when he's a bit dinged-up, and he's gonna continue to have foot problems his whole pro life. I like his game for this team because he can shoot, but can he be reliably available ? I say ... this season is the final test here. |

Yeah, he's not getting cut. He's looked solid this preseason, and I think can work well with Russell. |

Kelly has unique skills as far as the big men go on our roster, namely he can stretch the floor. That and his guaranteed contract keep him alive on the Laker survivor island.
He's never going to be a good defender, but he puts in effort and he is clearly much better suited to playing the PF. _________________ R.I.P. Doc Buss |
