The article, and the Investors Business Daily article it sources, using such inflammatory and diabolical terms as slush fun and political payoffs, was too vague to be of value, and, I suspect, extremely selective in the use of the data. It mentions the list from the Justice Department, and picks some from the list to further the editorialized point, but the list itself was not linked.

If there was any question as to who Mitch McConnell works for:

Quote:
McConnell Promises Billionaire Donors He Won’t Waste Time On ‘Gosh Darn’ Minimum Wage Increases

At a Koch Brothers-hosted secret strategy conference of right-wing millionaire and billionaire political activists in June, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) promised that if his party wins control of the United States Senate this November, the Senate will not waste time on things like increasing the minimum wage for people making only about $15,000 annually. Instead, audio of his remarks obtained by The Nation reveals, his Senate will focus on repealing Wall Street reforms, environmental protections, and affordable healthcare.

In the same speech, McConnell lamented the signing of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 (“McCain-Feingold”) as “the worst day of my political life,” and praised the Supreme Court’s 5 to 4 Citizens United ruling for “[leveling] the playing field for corporate speech” and creating “the most free and open system we’ve had in modern times.” Thanks largely to that ruling, outside groups have already spent more than $8.5 million in support of McConnell’s own re-election and against his Democratic opponent.

[...]

As he did last week, McConnell told the wealthy activists that a Republican majority would insert language into government spending bills that would require President Obama to repeal his administration’s principal accomplishments or risk another government shutdown.'

McCONNELL: So in the House and Senate, we own the budget. So what does that mean? That means that we can pass the spending bill. And I assure you that in the spending bill, we will be pushing back against this bureaucracy by doing what’s called ‘placing riders in the bill.’ No money can be spent to do this or to do that. We’re going to go after them on healthcare, on financial services, on the Environmental Protection Agency, across the board.

This comment seems to contradict his own pledge last October that “there will not be another government shutdown. You can count on that.”

Those are Obamas top donors in 2008. 3 Wall St. banks, 4 huge corporations, a law firm, and 2 Uni's with shall we say "not conservative" leanings.

The lesson here, trust no politician. This is an us or them fight, just not in the way you think (R)vs(D). Its us, and thats you and me, against THEM. Look up Romneys, even scarier. Though in his defense, financials are kinda his thing, so it makes sense theyd back him.

Sadly, this seems to be your entire repertoire: pimping demonstrably failed policies as truth, macho posturing, name calling, and trolling. Ironically, in a herd that lived by the rules you espouse from anonymity, you would almost certainly be culled... You have nothing to offer but a match and a bit of petrol. How sad.

Apparently you think this qualifies as offering substantive analysis: "Angering racists/ammosexuals/birthers/radical christians/assorted nuts 11/10"

What was incorrect about what I said?

Not a question of correct or not. Since it seems to be alluding you, what he is busy excoriating Splash for, you did as well. You see though, since you have to hang left around here to be in the club.....he got a written ruler across the knuckles for it.

Left, right, people are all the same for the most part. Hypocrites. No more feigned neutrality please.

That guy? From the 80's? You mean the guy who provided funding to rapists and murderers, by ignoring express US law to the contrary, via funding from essentially stolen TOW missiles that went the country that just imprisoned US citizens who then passed these off to terrorists?

Naw.

My post contained both an honest response to the Obama assessment question and some fair turnabout to an obvious bait post by an obvious bait poster. This post must've hit a sore spot with Splash1, because he went all-in with a direct assault.

Let's be real here. There are, unfortunately, a few posters who make presence in these types of threads with the sole intent to rabble-rouse, as if to "stick it" to people perceived to have a prevailing disagreement (as if everyone here believes the same things) having otherwise civil discussions and then, playing the oppressed minority card, which, ironically, is a behavior they don't enjoy when it's employed by certain other groups of people. I don't "hang" left or right, I have a fairly eclectic set of views, some of which you might even agree with, as do many posters here with whom you think you're in an ideological war.

Well, Harvard and all of the UC schools just happen to be some of the world's finest educational institutions. I wonder if you think there are any highly regarded, elite universities in this country with "pro conservative leanings." And before you list any Christian universities, note that I emphasized highly regarded and elite.

IMO
10 would've been total withdrawal of our military from the region and a direct or proxy fist up North Korea's ass, with some increased commercial sabotage of China
9 would be total discontinuation of engagement with partial withdrawal
8 is for not starting any new engagements or getting baited back into Iraq or into Syria...yet

LOL .. minus your "inflammatory and diabolical terms", aren't the groups listed correct?

Acorn disbanded in 2010. Yet this article is complaining about them receiving funds NOW. Ooops, there went their credibility. That's what happens when you get your "news" and "facts" from right-wing propaganda outlets.

Is there another professional that is as saturated with criminals as politics?
Below is a list from WIKI that lists the politicians who have been convicted of a crime while in office between 2010-2014.
Imagine if each state listed were instead an NFL team and the criminals were players.
Now realize that we hold players more accountable and to a higher standard than the representatives we choose to govern our lives. The NFL would never tolerate this behavior, but we the people do.
We don’t just excuse it, we justify it.
We expect it and we elect them anyway:

2010–2014

Alabama
• State Representative Terry Spicer (D) pled guilty to accepting more than $3000 per month in bribes.
• State Representative Greg Wren veteran Republican legislator, pled guilty to a misdemeanor ethics violation and resigned from the Alabama Legislature effective immediately as a condition of the plea deal. So how do we fix it?
Let’s start by admitting that ALL campaign contributions are moneys paid for political influence.
That is a bribe and should be illegal.
Voters to elect the best candidate based on their politics, not their fundraising. Their political views can be explained and documented on a public website viewable to all. Questions can be posed to be answered by the candidates. Public debates can take place. But all of this fundraising is the breeding grounds for criminal activity, and it is time for the crime to end.
No wonder they keep getting convicted.

But money = speech. We're going to have to amend the Constitution for that. We can't even agree on something as simple as socialized healthcare.

LOL .. minus your "inflammatory and diabolical terms", aren't the groups listed correct?

Have a ball

That is interesting and I appreciate the link, but that does not appear to be the list as refereced in the Investors Business Daily as stated:

Quote:
According to the list provided by Justice, those groups include come of the most radical bank shakedown organizations in the country, including:

• La Raza, which pressures banks to expand their credit box to qualify more low-income Latino immigrants for home loans;

• National Community Reinvestment Coalition, Washington's most aggressive lobbyist for the disastrous Community Reinvestment Act;

• Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America, whose director calls himself a "bank terrorist;"

• Operation Hope, a South Central Los Angeles group that's pressuring banks to make "dignity mortgages" for deadbeats.

Worse, one group eligible for BofA slush funds is a spin-off of Acorn Housing's branch in New York.

All of these groups, when searching the document you linked, come up as, "phrase not found"

Of course we don't, all we have to is eject those political partisans that currently have a lock on the Supreme Court and are interpreting everything so that it only benefits their political party. It's only constitutional under an extremely biased interpretation.

And if you're going to try and claim money is speech maybe you should try and claim that we were never really supposed to a democratic republic and that the framers of the constitution really just intended USA to be an oligarchy.

We have this great way of communication that is almost free, limitless in design and content, accessible to everyone, can be instantly updated while maintaining transparent accountablility. Rather that utilizing this as the primary information delivery method for our elected (and prospective) officials, we prefer to stick with back room dealings, envelopes full of unmarked bills and campaign double talk tailored to to whatever special interest group they are pandering too at tonight's $100 per plate bribe-a-thon. I'm not asking for campaign finance reform, I'm proposing that politicians be responsible for their actions, and every action be transparent to their constituents (matters of National Security not withstanding). We have outgrown the days of Politicians riding the rails from town to town delivering their stump speeches and "connecting with the community.

All of the candidates get a website.
They post whatever content they wish.
They can answer questions as they wish.
They can engage in debates as they wish.
There is no capital requirment.
The complete message is delivered equally to everyone.

We vote for whomever we want and prosecute anyone who accepts money for influence.

Obama's tan suit: How to wear a summer suit and be taken seriously

This is as weak as it gets. The suit didn't take from the substance of the speech, the Republicans did.

I hope they don't catch him eating the wrong foul.

Need a constitutional amendment banning political contributions and have publicly funded elections.

We also need to regulate television ads (fewer ads, less negative ads) and have more formal debates, in which independent commentators point out inaccuracies in real time. As it stands, campaigning is mostly about delivering talking points and attacking the other side, even if it doesn't reflect reality.

Of course, local tv stations would lobby against my first point and politicians would just boycott debates.
