The fine wasn't just for delay of game. What he did was on the court, and if not cleaned correctly is a hazard to players. I think the media was an influence, and I think his cavalier attitude "I always did have trouble hanging on to the ball" was a factor. BUT . . . 50 grand doesn't seem out of whack for intentionally messing with the playing surface. That is not a slippery slope the league wants to allow bush league coaches to go down. Kidd is not showing the class as a coach that he showed as a player. First his arrest, then this. Show some dignity pal! |

Stern picked up his ledger, told Silver, "hit me", and then accidentally dropped a 50k fine on Kidd.
So we're now up to two things Kidd does poorly with a drink in his hand... _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ― Elie Wiesel |

I just saw it again on compacto and it looks even more ridiculous from the broadcast angle. Kidd looked at TT before he even picked up the drink. Makes me wonder how long they had this planned. |

So now we know a timeout costs $50k. Next time, can a team owner just quickly write a check for that amount and buy a timeout?
A bit like playing Candy Crush, perhaps? |

I'll admit I didn't think it would go this far. I'm OK with the fine, don't like it, OK with it. It was to much IMO. That's more than the average American makes in a year. You can see two fans on the Nets sideline actually laughing at the entire scene as it unfolds, knowing full well what's going on.
The biggest irony is that Kidd would've gotten away with ALL of this if he wasn't so STUPID as to actually mouth the words "HIT ME".
If he just gets hit and communicates it more discretely there's no way to prove anything. Instead he moves his lips as clearly as possible - so clearly that a deaf person could lip read "HIT ME."
Like Samuel Jackson in Menace to Society - HIT ME. All of New York heard it. |
And then he was stupid enough to insist it was an accident when there was video of him saying "hit me". |

I'm surprised Taylor wasn't fined something too. |

I figured he'd be fined a big sum to keep other coaches and players from doing it. If the Lakers would've lost we'd have a different take IMO.
I wouldn't be surprised if the rules committee adds those to the reviews and handout tech ft's or give techs for drawing plays when it's not an official timeout. They've change so much lately that nothing is surprising. _________________ Never stop Believing!!! |

frankly he's lucky he wasn't suspended for a game, the basic equivalent of what a fan would get if they're caught deliberately throwing something on the floor. the arena tosses them. |

The outcome is irrelevant... he needs to be punished for his dishonest act. |
Hard to imagine the NBA punishing a coach with the only evidence of wrong-doing being guesses of what he might have said from amateur lip-readers |
It isn't just the lip reading. It's the timing of the event. If he spilled his drink in the middle the first quarter, I don't think people would be nearly as suspicious. If he spilled his drink when his team was up 15 in the 4th, again, I doubt there would be so much suspicion. But here he happens to spill his drink at a time when it's so incredibly convenient. His team just happens to be out of timeouts, it's the very end of the game, his team is down by a score and he just happens to spill his drink and get a free timeout when his team really needs it?
I don't think it takes much to make people less suspicious. If his team was up 3 and the other team had the ball, spilling his drink wouldn't look so convenient and people would be less suspicious. If his team had a couple of timeouts, again it would be less suspicious because he could easily accomplish the same thing by calling a timeout, and there would be no need to spill his drink. If his team was down by two scores instead of one, the odds of winning would be much lower and there wouldn't be as much upside to trying tricks like this.
Of course, the fact that he spills his drink at a time when it's most convenient isn't proof. It's possible to have an accident at a time like that. But I've never even seen a coach spill his drink during a game. It's so rare and the chances of it happening when it did (instead of any point earlier or later when it wouldn't have been a big deal to have an extra timeout) are so low that it makes me very suspicious.
I could care less about him getting fined though. The Nets didn't even score and they didn't win the game, so I think it's more amusing than anything else. |

Maybe if he apologized and admitted he did it on purpose right after the game the fine would have been less. Instead he denied it and lied through his teeth saying it was a clumsy accident. _________________ Nobody in the NBA can touch the Laker brand, which, like the uniform color, is pure gold. |

50k is good, dumping (bleep) on the court disrespects the game, can not be lenient |

50k is ridiculous. It's just another way for the league to collect more money. |

I hope one day I hit free parking and get all the fine money cause I would be Oprah Rich! _________________ This Laker Organization has not yet hit bottom. It is moving there quickly, and I suspect this year we will see zero talent coming to the Lakers and we will trade away Kuz and BI for old vets in the hopes of giving LeBronze some scapegoats. |

I believe all fine money goes to charity, so the league and owners receive no financial benefit from it. |
