The Forum: Lakers To Deal Gasol?
Talks between the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers about a trade involving Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum have stalled, sources told ESPN.com.

The deal is not dead, but it is no longer progressing. The Cavs, who have until Jan. 7 to trade Bynum before his contract becomes guaranteed and loses its instant value in a trade, are now actively seeking other options.

The major issue, sources said, involves the Lakers' desire to get an additional asset from the Cavs beyond Bynum's team-friendly contract, which could save the Lakers more than $20 million in salary and luxury taxes. The Lakers are interested in also getting a young prospect or first-round draft pick as part of the deal. The Cavs have been reluctant to part with either.

Report: Lakers, Cavs Pau Gasol-Andrew Bynum talks stalled

ESPN reports that talks between the Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers for a deal to end Pau Gasol to the Cavs in a trade-and-waive salary clearance move for Andrew Bynum have hit a standstill.

The deal is not dead but it is no longer progressing. The Cavs, who have until Jan. 7 to trade Bynum before his contract becomes guaranteed and loses its instant value in a trade, are now actively seeking other options.

To satisfy NBA trade rules, the Cavs would have to add at least one more player to any trade involving Gasol for Bynum.

NBA Rumors: Lakers Trading Pau Gasol To Nets, Cavaliers Or Celtics?

By Alex Groberman, Thu, January 02, 2014

The Los Angeles Lakers are considering trading Pau Gasol to the Brooklyn Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers or Boston Celtics, according to reports.

LA is currently 13-19 and riding a six-game losing streak. In their next seven games, they are looking at three guaranteed losses – at least. Maybe more. For obvious reasons, Mitch Kupchak and Co. are throwing up the white flag as far this year goes, and doing their best to chart a path forward past 2014.

Gasol, 33, is the Lakers’ second highest paid player, and he has an expiring contract. While he has pretty consistently been the subject of trade speculation over the past three years, his massive salary coupled with LA presumably being in cost-cutting mode has resulted in rumors getting ramped up to new levels lately.

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the Lakers apparently reached out to Nets brass to see if there was any interest in a Brook Lopez-for-Gasol swap. There wasn’t. And this was before the injury that will require Lopez to have this third foot surgery in two years.

Sources: Lakers in holding pattern in possible Gasol-Bynum trade with Cavs
Sam Amico

FOX Sports

JAN 02, 2014 2:34p ET

Kelley L Cox / USA TODAY Sports
A player like Pau Gasol would likely help the Cavaliers reach their postseason goals and his expiring contract makes him particularly appealing.

The Los Angeles Lakers feel the Cleveland Cavaliers have nowhere else to turn when it comes to Andrew Bynum, and therefore, can afford to wait on a potential trade involving Pau Gasol, sources said.

As reported Tuesday, the teams have been discussing a swap of Cavs center Bynum and Lakers forward/center Gasol.

The talks have hit a snag, sources said, as the Lakers are seeking more than just Bynum's contract in return. If the Lakers obtained Bynum, sources said, he would immediately be waived. Ridding themselves of Gasol's expiring $19-million deal, and waiving Bynum, would enable them to avoid hefty tax-related fines under the NBA's salary cap.

Bynum was suspended by the Cavs for conduct detrimental to the team last week. The Cavs have been trying to deal him since, and will need to make a move before Jan. 8 to avoid paying his full $12.25 million salary. If Bynum is traded or waived, he is due just half.

Sources said the Lakers would make the Gasol-Bynum trade quickly if the Cavs were willing to part with a small asset, such as a draft pick or player with a short-term contract. The Lakers are very sensitive to players with long-term contracts, as they desperately want to protect future cap space, sources said.

More specifically, in addition to Bynum, the Lakers are believed to be seeking a deal that would expire within the next year or two, or in the "Kobe window," when star guard Kobe Bryant's two-year contract expires, sources indicated. Cavs guards Dion Waiters and C.J. Miles, forward Earl Clark and forward/center Anderson Varejao all have deals that fit such a timeframe.

According to sources, the Lakers appear willing to see what else the Cavs would include in a possible deal before they need to make a concrete decision on Bynum early next week.

Cleveland Cavaliers Rumors: Andrew Bynum For Pau Gasol Swap In The Works?

January 2, 2014 3:50 pm EST by kennethbrown

Jayne Kamin-Oncea- USA TODAY Sports
There was so much optimism in Cleveland when the Cleveland Cavaliers announced they’d signed center Andrew Bynum, but some warned them that would be a short-lived feeling; and they were right. He was suspended for his conduct recently and the Cavaliers have since been desperate in their attempts to trade him. One deal in the cards is the trade of Bynum to the Los Angeles Lakers with the Cavaliers receiving Pau Gasol.
The Cavaliers had their own concerns when signing Bynum, so they had placed a Jan. 7, 2014 deadline within his contract. If he was good, he stayed and would receive the second half of his $12 million. If he was poor, however, they would cut their losses and release him. With his expiring contract an appealing one, the Cavaliers are hoping to trade him before this deadline

NBA trade rumors: Lakers want more from Cavs in Andrew Bynum deal

Kevin Zimmerman, SBNation
POSTED: Thursday, January 2, 2014, 1:11 PM

Talks have stalled between the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers in a discussed deal involving Cavs center Andrew Bynum and Lakers forward Pau Gasol.

Trade discussion involving a swap of Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol has stalled between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers, according to ESPN's Marc Stein and Ramona Shelbourne. The talks aren't dead, but the Cavs are apparently looking at other options to shed Bynum.

The two sides have discussed a swap of Bynum and Gasol, the two former Lakers teammates, but both remain apprehensive in pulling the trigger.

The Lakers want more than the financial benefit that would come with acquiring Bynum. Along with Bynum, the center they drafted out of high school in 2005, the Lakers would want an additional asset in the form of a young prospect or a draft pick. Cleveland isn't too keen on giving up either, but for the salaries to match up would also need to give up an additional contract on top of Bynum's.

ESPN predicts Los Angeles could save up to $20 million in salary and luxury tax spending if it acquired and then waived Bynum. But the Lakers are reluctant to trade away Gasol, even though he's butted heads with coach Mike D'Antoni and has an expiring contract. Cleveland would have interest in Gasol to continue their quest of making the postseason this year, yet Los Angeles wants to hang on to Gasol until the team's current injury problems shape up -- the Lakers also are gripping to long-shot playoff hopes.

Fear the Sword: More on the Cavs
Los Angeles can't wait very long. Bynum's $12.2 million contract becomes fully guaranteed as of Jan. 7, and Cleveland could waive or trade him by that deadline. Once his contract becomes guaranteed, the Cavs would only be able to trade Bynum to teams willing to pay him the full amount despite the risks of what have him jettisoned in Cleveland.

Bynum has averaged 8.4 points and 5.3 rebounds in restricted minutes this year but became a distraction in the locker room. He has been on paid leave while the Cavs attempt to trade him.

L.A.’S STUNNING ROLE REVERSAL

January 2, 2014 · 4:06PM

HANG TIME SOUTHWEST – Happy New Year, Mike D’Antoni. A”We Want Phil” chant, however silly, percolated through Staples Center in L.A. on Tuesday as the glamorous-turned-anonymous Lakers faded to black again in an ugly loss to the now seven-win Milwaukee Bucks.
Total bummer of a New Year’s Eve party.
Former Lakers coach Phil Jackson, of course, wouldn’t touch this sinking M*A*S*H unit with a bionic-kneed Andrew Bynum. At this point, any talk of the league’s worst teams has to include the purple and gold, who are 13-19, have lost six in a row (half of those by an average of 17 points) and show no sign of snapping back any time soon.
How could they snap back? Consider D’Antoni’s starting five in the 94-79 loss to Milwaukee: Jordan Farmar (who tore his left hamstring in the game and will miss a month), Jodie Meeks, Nick Young, Shawne Williams and Pau Gasol. His available bench was limited to: Jordan Hill, Ryan Kelly, Kendall Marshall, Robert Sacre and Chris Kaman (who has fallen so far he couldn’t even get in the game).
Look at it this way: These unidentifiable Lakers are closer to last-place Utah than to eighth-place Dallas in the Western Conference standings. That gap will either shrink or grow Friday night when the Lakers welcome the Jazz (10:30 p.m. ET, League Pass) – who, ahem, just beat L.A. in Salt Lake City a week ago.

Lakers face major questions in '14

The Los Angeles Lakers started off 2013 with six straight losses in January and ended it with six straight losses in December. Fitting bookends for the worst year in franchise history.

From the death of legendary owner Dr. Jerry Buss, to the most gruesome injury of Kobe Bryant's career, to Dwight Howard bolting to become the first major free agent the Lakers have ever lost, to the coach they chose to replace Phil Jackson being fired just five games into his second season, to more injuries than any team should have to deal with, it was a year Lakers fans would rather forget.

Or, as Nick Young put it on New Year's Eve: "I'm glad 2013 is over, and I'm looking forward to the future."

The future always brings the promise of a brighter day, but everything the Lakers have been through in the last year leaves them in a state of disarray that won't be so easy to get out of.

Here are four major questions facing the Lakers as they jump into 2014:

Mastrantoni: Looking back Bynum and filling the void
Jan 2, 2014
It’s not really surprising that Andrew Bynum was suspended by the Cavaliers last week for “conduct detrimental to the team”.

The enigmatic center has a long history that suggests this was entirely predictable. What is surprising though is that there was little in the way of media reports beforehand suggesting there was any problem stirring internally with the Cavaliers and Bynum at all. It came out of nowhere. Leaks of what actually went on between the organization and Bynum probably won’t surface for a while, but the truth is that the Cavaliers are better off without Bynum even if he wasn’t causing issues off the court.

The Cavs were worse in every major statistical category when Bynum graced the floor. Offensively the Cavs guards struggled to get Bynum the ball in the post and when they did the result was rarely efficient offense. On defense Bynum’s inability to switch on picks, defend anywhere outside of the paint, or get back in transition all hurt Mike Brown’s defensive system. To blame Bynum for all the Cavs struggles with him on the floor would be unjust though. Brown never seemed to alter the team’s defensive principles enough to accommodate the lack of mobility that hinders Bynum, and on offense the Cavs guards and the lack of spacing are partially responsible for Bynum’s offensive struggles. In the end, however, Bynum never showed the Cavs enough to justify continuing to alter the way they play just to accommodate a center who was shooting a meager 42% from the floor and seemed to produce little in the way of wins.

Cavs “seeking other options” in potential Andrew Bynum deal
January 2, 2014 by Scott 18 Comments
It appears that the potential Andrew Bynum-to-Los Angeles deal that was reported this week is on life support. ESPN.com’s resident Cavaliers beat NBA writer reports that while the deal which would send Pau Gasol to Cleveland in exchange for the cap space which would be cleared by waiving center Andrew Bynum is no longer progressing and that Chris Grant and the Cavs are looking elsewhere.
The major issue, sources said, involves the Lakers’ desire to get an additional asset from the Cavs beyond Bynum’s team-friendly contract, which could save the Lakers more than $20 million in salary and luxury taxes. The Lakers are interested in also getting a young prospect or first-round draft pick as part of the deal. The Cavs have been reluctant to part with either.
It was reported earlier this week that the Lakers had coveted a first-round pick in the deal which could also included small forward Alonzo Gee. Talks between the Cavaliers and Lakers hit a bit of a speed bump over the New Year’s holiday as All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving had a scare when he suffered what looked to have been a threatening knee injury. The Cavaliers, potentially without Irving, did not want to add Gasol and his $19.3 million contract.

NBA Trade Rumors: Andrew Bynum-Pau Gasol Deal On Life Support
Published by Glenn Minnis on January 2, 2014.

Once brimming, trade talks between the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers about swapping one-time teammates Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol have reportedly hit a major snag.

While the deal is not considered dead, ESPN reports it’s definitely in need of resuscitation if the Cavs are to meet their goal of dealing Bynum before his entire $24 million contract he inked with the team last summer becomes guaranteed on January 7.

According to sources, the sticking point appears to be the Lakers’ demands of additional assets beyond Bynum’s team-friendly contract. Even though L.A. could save as much as $20 million in salary and luxury tax obligations if, as widely expected, they move to instantly waive Bynum, the team also remains growingly intent on securing either a young prospect or first-round draft pick as part of the deal.

As per NBA trade rules, the Cavs would almost certainly have to add at least one more player to any trade involving Gasol for Bynum in order to make the deal work financially. Still, what the Lakers are now demanding seems to strike Cavs’ management as being too steep.

Lakers engineering Gasol trade to free cap space for Durant

When Kobe Bryant leaves the Los Angeles Lakers, the Lake Show will be without a “star” player. The player who will fill these shoes has been a big question going forward, especially when considering who they want involved in a trade for Pau Gasol.

There’s a new report floating around that the Lakers are engineering the Gasol trade to make a run at Durant in 2016. According to LakersHolics.com:
"Mitch Kupchak has said all along that the Lakers' cap space may be used in a trade instead of via free agency, though having a contract like Lopez's that runs until 2016 would mean that the team would probably be unable to chase the likes of Kevin Love in 2015. It would also mean that the purple and gold would have a ton of cap space when Kobe Bryant's contract comes off the books and Kevin Durant becomes a free agent in 2016."

Cavs reluctant to give more assets in Bynum-Gasol deal
Posted On 02 Jan 2014

Cesar Tordesillas – 4E Sports Contributor
Cleceland, OH, United States (4E Sports) – The Los Angeles Lakers’ desire to get more assets from the Cleveland Cavaliers have kept their trade talks involving Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum from progressing.

To satisfy NBA trade rules, the Cavs would have to add at least one more player to any trade involving Gasol for Bynum, and the Lakers wanted a young prospect or a first-round draft pick.

The Cavs are reluctant to part with either as Gasol has not been at his best this season and there’s no guarantee he actually helps out before leaving in free agency next summer.

But they only have until Jan. 7 to trade Bynum before his contract becomes guaranteed and loses its instant value.

The Lakers (13-19), who have lost six games in a row, wanted Bynum’s team-friendly contract to save them more than $20 million in salary and luxury taxes.

There is some pressure for the Lakers to get out of the luxury tax to avoid triggering a “repeater tax” as they intend to be major free-agent players the next two summers.

It's official: Kendall Marshall will start for the Lakers on Friday

Kendall Marshall is latest player to take over at starting point guard for the Lakers. (Chris Carlson / Associated Press / December 20, 2013)
By Mike Bresnahan
January 2, 2014, 1:52 p.m.

This wouldn't have entered Kendall Marshall's thoughts in his wildest, most optimistic moments.

The former first-round draft washout is now the Lakers' starting point guard. Two weeks ago he was playing for the Delaware 87ers of the NBA Development League.

Coach Mike D'Antoni made it official Thursday, giving Marshall the nod at point over veteran shooting guard Jodie Meeks after Jordan Farmar was declared out for four weeks because of a torn hamstring.

"Stuff is happening pretty fast," Marshall said. "It's unfortunate with some of the injuries that we're having. But it's up to us collectively as a team to kind of figure it out."

Marshall was the 13th pick in the 2012 draft but was traded from Phoenix to Washington a little more than a year later as part of a bigger trade involving center Marcin Gortat. The Wizards promptly cut Marshall.

The Lakers signed him Dec. 20 after injuries to Steve Nash, Steve Blake and Kobe Bryant forced their hand.

Amid trade rumors, Pau Gasol says he wants to remain with the Lakers and ride out the storm

EL SEGUNDO — Pau Gasol knows all about trade rumors. The 33-year-old Laker has been hearing them about himself the past couple of years, and it’s happening again. By now, one might think Gasol might just want to get out of Dodge and say, “Adios.”

Not so, he told reporters Thursday following practice.

“Yeah, I mean, this is my home, it’s my team,” said Gasol, when a reporter asked him straight out if he wants to stay with the Lakers. “It’s a team that I’ve been through so much with and I’m not the type of guy that likes to jump ship because everything is not going right right now.”

Gasol said he wants to ride out this nasty storm in which the Lakers (13-19) currently reside.

“I’m a loyal guy and I like would like to continue to be here and fight with the guys who are here and once we get bodies back, everything will be better,” said Gasol, whose team will host the Utah Jazz at 7:30 tonight at Staples Center. “But right now, I would like to continue to stay here and just ... this is my team, this is my city.”
