Cover Your Eyes… Kobe was wincing in pain, covering his eyes and rubbing the frustration away as he sat on the sidelines in his suit.
“This is our first really bad game,” said coach Mike D’Antoni afterward.
He hasn’t been watching, either, apparently.
The Lakers have their hands full against bottom-dwelling teams. Facing the better teams in the league right now, it’s just not going to be pretty.
They gave up 18 points off 9 first quarter turnovers as the Clippers scored 43 points in that opening quarter. The Clippers had the highlight reel stuffed with dunks and blocks and the game had just started. By the time the third quarter hit, the Lakers trailed by 40 points after scoring just 8 in third. The two Laker field goals in the quarter tied a franchise record low. That ain’t right no matter how much you’re injured.
The loss was inevitable. The 123-87 score, tough to take.
The injury-riddled freefall continues. By the time that January is over, the Lakers will likely know whether or not they are lottery bound. By then, the question whether Nash comes back or when Kobe returns won’t matter. If they’re still thinking about the playoffs then, the math will be against them, no matter how healthy they get.
After Tuesday’s game, the Lakers are set to go on a 7-game road trip.
Gasol -- -- He didn’t get much help from his fellow bigs in this one. And he seemed to also be one of the few to go right at Jordan for scores. But Pau seems only up for one half these days. Defensively, the Pau/Marshall two-man D isn’t going to stop much of anything. By the time the Lakers are done with January, Pau may be happy for a trade. It hasn’t been pretty and won’t be for a while. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-15 shooting to go with 8 boards, 5 assists, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -25. The Action: He posted up and kicked to Marshall for the three. He missed a 20-footer. He attacked, spun and hesitated on the turnaround and missed. He hit Sacre for the baseline jumper. He tipped in a miss on the break. He missed a short one in the paint. He missed an open FT jumper, got to knock those down. He hit Marshall for another three after drawing a double. He was doubled on the baseline in transition but found Johnson under the hoop for the dunk. He iso’d on Jordan, spun and slammed with both hands on the baseline. He picked up his second foul and had to sit late in the first quarter. He airballed after getting a shove with no call in the paint. He worked a hook around Jordan with ease. Jab step and he attacked Jordan for another hook over him. He hit Sacre cutting baseline for a layup. He had 8 points and 5 assists at the half. Second Half: He was blocked on a predictable turnaround jumper, saw that coming a mile away. He pumpfaked and was stripped by the help D before he could power up. He missed an elbow jumper. He missed a lefty scoop in the paint. He scored a layup when a loose ball went to him. He was blocked on a layup.
Meeks -- -- I’ve never seen a -43. Poor Jodie. Good thing he wears that mouth guard. It seemed like he was taking contact all night long. I felt a little sorry for him when he was in at PG early on. The Clippers were pressuring hard and he was trying his best. That made the offense frustrating for him. Meanwhile, he was getting lit by Redick early on. He still got his steal per game, 15 in a row now to lead the NBA. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 2-10 shooting (0-2 from three, 7-8 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 steal, 5 turnovers and 4 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -43. The Action: He missed a short one on the break, but Pau tipped it in. He took contact and missed the elbow jumper with no call. He missed an open wing three out of a timeout. He missed a jumper with a man on him in the lane. He fumbled a dribble trying to bring it up, led to an oop for the Clippers. He attacked hard in transition to draw FTs, he made both. He attacked the paint and hit the runner. He fumbled a kickout away, uggh. He found a loose ball and scored a layup. Quick attack from the corner and he drew FTs, he made both. He drew an offensive foul from Dudley. He missed a pull-up jumper creating off the dribble. He was swatted in transition next time down. He missed a sideline jumper. He got backdoored for FTs on the other end. Second Half: He attacked the paint and drew FTs to start the half, he made both. He took contact around a man with no call and missed the layup. He was called for a charge trying to playmake. He attacked in transition and ran into a man for a charge. He missed a wing three. He attacked and lost the ball out of bounds. He drew FTs colliding with a man before an inbounds pass came, he made one.
Marshall -- -- Honestly, he’s one of the few things that are worth watching right now. Whether he does good or bad, it’s at least interesting to watch him work on his game. He knocked down his threes early on, spacing the floor for Pau in the post and taking advantage of defenders going under the screen. That’s what he’s got to do. “There’s no team in this league that’s 40 or 50 points better than anyone else. That’s on us,” Marshall said. “We got to go out there and just compete.” He said offensively, they need to stay in a flow better. They’re getting taken out of games with short stretches of sloppy ball. Good game from him. People criticize his shot, but if he can hit three with it, not a problem. It’s all that in-between stuff he’s got to work on. And the defensive end, of course. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-11 shooting (3-4 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 10 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 40 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He swished a long three on the Pau kickout to start the game. He drained another three on a Pau kickout when his man left him again. He kicked out to Johnson for the three. His pass was picked off for a dunk. Looked like his layup was goaltended. He drained another wing three as his man went under the screen. He took the outlet, didn’t force a pass that wasn’t there and scored an And-1 layup around his man, he made the FT. He missed a step-back jumper. He had 12 points and 4 assists at the half. Second Half: He hit Sacre on the screen-roll for a short jumper. He missed a tip, then twisted his ankle when he came down, lucky he dodged the PG curse there. He attacked and hit Kaman for the layup. He missed a wing three. He pushed it out with speed and scored a layup in a crowd. He whipped a pass to Sacre under the hoop for the layup. He found Sacre open again for a dunk.
Johnson -- -- Pretty good first half offensively for him. He made everything he took. He cooled down in the second half, going 0-6. “It’s like we let our heads down and played like that the rest of the game,” Wes said. He’s not made for rosters like this. He needs stars to play around. Be the garbage man who makes a big impact. Put him on a good team where you need a versatile defender and someone to contain opponents come playoff time, that’s the role he needs to grow in. He’s not going to see that this year. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-11 shooting (1-3 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -26. The Action: He banked in a FT jumper, forcing it with a defender all over him. He stepped on the sideline trying to create off the dribble. He drained a wing three on a slow developing kickout. He slammed off the Pau feed in a semi-transition type of sequence. Poor concentration on an And-1 layup getting fouled slightly from behind on one he could have made, he made both FTs. He attacked Blake in transition and scored a tough And-1 layup, he made the FT. He didn’t protect a defensive rebound and it was stolen for a score. He up-faked the fly-by man, moved in closer and hit the baseline jumper. He had 14 points at the half on 5-5 shooting. Second Half: He missed a wing jumper off one dribble. He missed a sideline three. He back-rimmed a lob dunk he should have finished. He got tapped on a wing three. He was blocked on a dunk attempt. He missed a three.
Sacre -- -- He got some decent numbers in this game. Not that it mattered much, but 14 and 7 in 18 minutes is a decent outing for him. He wasn’t able to provide much resistance defensively. Didn’t like seeing him have to try to D-up Blake Griffin whenever that happened. He should be our third-string big instead of going up against starters. Still, good experience and minutes for him to grow with. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-8 shooting (4-6 from the line) to go with 7 boards (3 offensive), 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He threw a kickout away, layup the other way. He swished the baseline jumper off the Pau kickout. He was rejected on a throwdown attempt by Jordan. Nice job grabbing an offensive board, he then faked and powered up, nearly getting the And-1 to drop but good fight in him, he made both FTs. He cut baseline behind Blake, took the pass, didn’t go up immediately, instead faked Blake badly and scored the layup around him. He missed a wing 18-footer. Second Half: He hit the short pull-up jumper working the two-man game with Marshall. He scored a layup off the feed from Marshall. He was stripped on a drive. He dunked when Marshall found him again. He plowed over a little guy in transition for FTs, he made one. More FTs next time down.
Young -- -- “Shouldn’t lose by 40 to nobody,” Young said. He had nothing in this one. Couldn’t hit his shot. Our offense was out of sync and struggling. Wasn’t pretty. “Can’t just let people dunk on us our clown us without even giving a hard foul or show some emotion,” he said. Agreed completely. They should have been pissed. Instead they put their heads down. The losing has sunk in and they’re accepting it. He went down late in the game crashing the offensive glass. In garbage time, we don’t need any injuries. “They killed us, man,” Young said afterward. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 3-14 shooting (0-5 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He lost the handle trying to elevate, turnover. He missed a long three straight away. He hit a pull-up straight away. He missed a layup around Jordan. He missed an iso jumper. Second Half: He missed a wing three, good hustle back to grab Blake before he tried to highlight reel a dunk in. He made a tech FT. He couldn’t finish a layup around Jordan, not even close. He missed a sideline three. He iso’d and missed a good look at a jumper. He made a jumper from the top-of-the-key. He missed a long wing jumper. He sank an And-1 jumper in the paint, he made the FT. He missed a three straight away. He was stripped in the paint. He missed a wing jumper. He crashed the glass and drew FTs, going down in pain, he made both. He made a tech FT.
Hill -- -- “We got to figure this out real quick,” Hill said. If they don’t get it done in the next three weeks, their season is done. Like Wes, Jordan is the kind of player that needs to be on the floor around stars. You don’t need to draw things up for him, just let others draw attention and Hill can take advantage. Not much impact from Hill in this lop-sided beating. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -25. The Action: He grabbed a board and looked shoved, turnover, points the other way. He was blocked on a dunk attempt. He missed a jumper. Second Half: He grabbed an offensive board, but couldn’t finish in a crowd. He couldn’t finish a lob from Kaman.
Kaman -- -- He had 4 turnovers in 19 minutes. Not pretty from a bigman in short minutes. Not much of a game from Kaman. Like the rest of the team, he was just out of sync with little chemistry on the floor. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-6 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls. The Action: He easily backed Blake down and hit the lefty jumphook. He hit Wes cutting for FTs. He missed a Kwame-esque, hyper-speed post up play. He threw a pass away for transition points. He missed an open baseline jumper. He fumbled away a screen-roll pass. Second Half: He was blocked in the paint after getting a board. He drew FTs trying to finish a layup. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Marshall. He clanked a layup. His pass was stolen.
Kelly -- -- He’s not ready for prime time, but he’s getting the run. Good experience for him and hopefully he can grow from it. At least he got on the boards this game and pulled down 5. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-6 shooting (0-2 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists and 5 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He was called for a foul on a decent block attempt on Barnes. He tapped out a missed jumper and it led to a Meeks layup. Second Half: He was rejected badly at the rim. He missed a wing jumper. He missed a runner, not close. He sank a couple garbage-time FTs. He missed a three. He took a charge in the post when his man tried to back him down. He attacked full court, got into the paint, up-faked and hit the And-1, he made the FT. He missed a three at the end of the game.
D’Antoni -- -- Quick pace to start the game and the Lakers fell back by 5 points when the timeout came… He sat Sacre for Kaman after 4 minutes… Clippers getting separation with a 10-0 run when Young came in for Meeks, Lakers down 11 now… The Lakers cut it to 1 on a 12-2 run, hitting some threes and some nice plays from Pau… Pau picked up his second foul with 3:34 left, Lakers down 3 and had to sit for Hill. Lakers would get destroyed these next couple of minutes… Down 32-23, D’Antoni brought back in Meeks for Marshall to backup the point... Lakers fading fast… He brought back in Marshall to try to help make the offense work… Lakers with 9 turnovers (leading to 18 Clipper points) in the first quarter… The Lakers trailed 43-25 after the first. Case of turnovers, leading to easy opponent hoops all quarter. PG injuries killing the Lakers… He started a Hill, Kelly, Young, Meeks, Marshall unit… He brought in Pau for Hill after 2 minutes with the Lakers down 17… The Lakers cut down on the easy runouts and played more normal back and forth ball for most of the second quarter… They trailed 70-52 at the half. The Lakers shot 44% (19-43, 4-6 3PT, 10-10 FT). The Clippers shot 48% (24-50, 4-12 3PT, 18-21 FT)… Lakers had 13 turnovers, the Clippers 4… Midway through the quarter, the Clippers went on a 14-0 run before Pau scored. Just getting killed again… The Lakers were outscored 31-8 in the third quarter… They trailed 101-60 heading into the fourth… Garbage time all second half… Stu in the fourth quarter as they went to commercial break, “120 to—no I’m not even going to give a score.”… |

Thanks DB, for making this season a learning experience.
The game banter between Mac and Stu is getting difficult to watch, especially since Stu has witnessed such greatness over the years.
Sheesh, "I've never seen a -43" |

Wish I had covered my eyes, this one was a stinker.
Flashes of some good passing by Marshall was about the only thing worth watching. Pau has some moments early on but once again, nothing after half-time, definite pattern for him.
Thanks for the write-up. _________________ “There is always light if only we're brave enough to see it, if only we're brave enough to be it.” --Amanda Gorman |

The sad thing is that so many people on this board are fine with these losses for that very small percentage chance of getting a great player. |

Whether we want it or not, if they don't somehow turn things around on this upcoming lengthy roadtrip, they won't be able to avoid drafting in the lottery. They'd have to suddenly become one of the best teams in the league for the remainder of the season just to make the playoffs. Won't happen. At that point, it will be better to be at the top of the lottery than the bottom. It's not quite set in stone yet, but they'll need a serious gut check in the next couple weeks to prevent it. Unfortunately the guys seem to be getting worse by the game right now. |

Interesting tidbit by Stu
Last time the Lakers scored only 2 baskets in 1 quarter was in 1996 when Shaq and Kobe were on the team. |

Thanks DB
We all gotta give DB major props for this. Having to cover this crap. True Laker fan if there ever was one. Easy to cover games and break them down (I have done a few) when we're winning. When we're losing and looking this bad? Takes a real pro and fan.
The worst part in watching this team is you know there's so many guys who won't even be on the team in a year or two. If we had a rookie or two guys who we knew we were developing into starters on a championship caliber team, I'd have far more interest.
And please no one say Kelly or Sacre. I'll kill you ! |

Reminded me of the 1991-92 season...in February 1992, the Magic-less Lakers team got curb stomped by the Ron Harper/Danny Manning Clippers 125-94
I was a teenager then...and my emotions didn't deal with it the same way then as they now. |

At this time - only possible players that could be back are Young, Johnson, Hill, Farmar and Marshall (if they don't take abhigher offer from another team) |
