Lakers giving games away with turnovers

The Lakers have lost nine of their last 10 games, including three in a row.

Injuries have decimated the squad but the Lakers have competed in recent games. Poor second-half performances, however, have been fatal.

"We're just mentally fatigued sometimes," said Coach Mike D'Antoni after practice on Thursday. "We've got to play at a high level and we've got to sustain it, and so far we haven't done that."

On Wednesday, the Lakers were outscored by the Houston Rockets in the third quarter, 33-15 -- eventually falling 113-99. The Lakers had 18 turnovers, leading to numerous Houston run-outs.

"That's probably the No. 1 in why we're losing, we're giving up between 25 and 35 points every game on points off turnovers," said D'Antoni

Point guard Kendall Marshall had eight assists but turned the ball over six times.

"I definitely take that upon myself, being a point guard, being the coach on the floor -- it's inexcusable to have the type of turnovers I've had," said Marshall. "I think if I cut down on those turnovers and get us into the offense, those are more shots that we're getting, and less dunks that they're getting. I'm putting that on myself."

D'Antoni isn't so sure it's Marshall's fault.

LAKERS GIVE MARSHALL A SECOND CHANCE

January 9, 2014 · 11:17AM

Kendall Marshall is making the most of his time at the helm for L.A. (Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE via Getty Images)
DALLAS – All week in Reno, Nev., the D-League Showcase has provided some 200 basketball players — some former NBA first-rounders, some with legitimate NBA service time and many more who fell through the cracks — a stage to perform in front of a horde of NBA team decision-makers.
Kendall Marshall is not among them. He almost assuredly would have been as a member of the Delaware 87ers if not for an unbelievable string of injuries to all three of the Los Angeles Lakers’ point guards. On Dec. 21, the Phoenix Suns’ No. 13 pick in 2012, who was traded to Washington on Oct. 25 and waived that day, became the Lakers’ emergency plan.
“Honestly,” Marshall told NBA.com Tuesday night, “I’m just thankful for the situation I’m in. I’m trying to make the most of it, trying to get better and find a way to help this team.”
Instead of playing his heart out during this five-day stretch in northwest Nevada on a shoestring D-League salary of about $25,000, Marshall is auditioning nightly — strange to say of a lottery pick one year removed, but altogether true — in front of league executives on the biggest stage. And as of Tuesday he’s doing so on a fully guaranteed contract for the remainder of the season at about a half-million dollars.
Still, it guarantees nothing beyond a few more weeks, perhaps more, of genuine playing time for the former North Carolina Tar Heel, a heady although not overly athletic, smooth-passing point guard aptly nicknamed “Butter.” Soon Steve Blake will return from an elbow injury. Jordan Farmar will come back from a hamstring injury. Steve Nash is targeting a February return.

LA Lakers Have a Shot If Kendall Marshall Makes His Shots

HOUSTON — You want a metaphor for the current Los Angeles Lakers?

Kendall Marshall’s jump shot.

If everything is firing perfectly, a whole complicated host of unconventional, unheralded variables that tumble into place for the basketball to be shot-put on line and higher than seems possible from such a low, sad starting point … then the Lakers win.

The only game the Lakers have won in their past 10 tries, all without injured Kobe Bryant, was the night of “Marsh Madness”—at home against the Utah Jazz, Marshall’s first start in place of the injured Jordan Farmar. He produced 20 points, 15 assists and one turnover, including the dagger three-pointer from way beyond the arc.

Marshall shot 1-of-6 on three-pointers and 2-of-13 overall Wednesday night in the Lakers’ loss to the Houston Rockets. Many of his jumpers started from that low release point and never found ideal extension to get up and over the rim.

It was the most graphic demonstration to date of Marshall’s much-maligned stroke that had been more than satisfactory with the Lakers, aesthetic beauty aside.

Despite Kobe Bryant's advice, he's an All-Star starter to voting fans

Kobe Bryant recently suggested that fans vote for younger players such as Damian Lillard for February's NBA All-Star Game.

The fans aren't listening.

On Thursday, the league released its latest set of returns and Bryant is the leading vote-getter in the backcourt at 844,538.

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (677,372) displaced inured Clippers guard Chris Paul (651,073) in the West. Paul is out for six weeks with a separated shoulder.

Bryant has been sidelined with a knee injury but should be healthy in time for the Feb. 16 All-Star Game in New Orleans.

Dwyane Wade (718,109) of the Miami Heat and Kyrie Irving (652,522) of the Cleveland Cavaliers are the top vote-getters in the Eastern Conference. Injured Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose (323,099) is a distant third.

Kevin Durant (1,054,209), of the Oklahoma City Thunder leads the West in the frontcourt, followed by Houston's Dwight Howard (509,116) and the Clippers' Blake Griffin (500,964). The top three in the frontcourt are selected by fans as starters.

Jordan Farmar progresses toward spot shooting
Posted on January 9, 2014 by Mark Medina
For the first time since tearing his left hamstring for the second time this season nine days ago, Lakers guard Jordan Farmar spent the end of Thursday’s practice working on spot shooting.

That ranged from Farmar working on drills with Lakers assistant coach Johnny Davis, which entailed shooting free throws, baseline jumpers and bank shots without lifting his legs.

Those drills mark a small benchmark in Farmar’s healing process, which the Lakers estimate will last at least another three more weeks.

“He’s worthless,” Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni joked. “I want him back, but right now he’s worthless. [When he returns], I’ll love him.”

The Lakers (14-22) enter Friday’s game against the Clippers (25-13) with depressing news beyond losing nine of their last 10 games. They also field notable injuries to Kobe Bryant (fractured left knee), Steve Nash (nerve issues in back), Steve Blake (hyperextended right elbow), Xavier Henry (bone bruise in right knee) and Farmar. Henry could return as early as next week, but the Lakers aren’t expected to have their other flood of guards until February.

Lakers will take help from anyone

Losers of nine out of 10, Lakers remain short-handed going into game against Clippers.

By Mike Bresnahan and Eric Pincus
January 9, 2014, 5:15 p.m.

Times are so tough for the Lakers, their healthy players so few and far between, that a former wide receiver has played point guard at some of their practices.

J.J. Outlaw has scrimmaged in spurts with the team over the last week or so. He's part of the Lakers' player-personnel staff and played for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2007 preseason.

Of course, he injured his thumb while scrimmaging. Apparently jammed it while going for a loose ball.

So really, nobody is safe playing point guard for the Lakers.

"It's been bothering me for days," Outlaw said while looking at his thumb, trying to laugh at all the injury madness.

If there's any consolation for the Lakers, losers of nine of 10, they play someone Friday who's also short-handed. The Clippers will be without Chris Paul, making the "Battle of L.A." more like a mild encounter of backcourt backups, though J.J. Redick might return for the Clippers after a six-week injury absence.

This game would be something to sigh at, if not for the Lakers scoring their biggest victory of the season against the Clippers back in October. It was opening night, all you need to know about the Lakers' season so far.

"It's been a tough road the last 10 to 15 games," said Lakers center Chris Kaman, who could tack on a few more and still be accurate.

James Worthy tabs Kevin Love as top free agent Lakers should pursue

Posted on November 21, 2013 by Mark Medina

For once, a large segment of the Lakers’ fanbase no longer have championship or bust aspirations.

So many uncertainties have happened clouding that picture, ranging from the pending return of Kobe Bryant (left Achilles tendon) and Steve Nash (back). So many offseason departures left the Lakers with depleted talent, including Dwight Howard (bolted to Houston via free agency) and Metta World Peace (joined New York after being waived in a cost-cutting measure). So many of the team’s struggles both past (last year’s first-round sweep to San Antonio) and present (a 5-7 record) suggest rocky times ahead.

That’s why plenty of fans are targeting next offseason when a crop of free agents, including Miami’s LeBron James and New York’s Carmelo Anthony, will be available on the open market. But former Lakers star James Worthy, who is an analyst for Time Warner Cable SportsNet, tabbed those scenarios as “media hype” considering the unlikelihood James would leave a championship contending team and Anthony leaving a franchise that has revolved around him. Instead, Worthy tried to offer a more pragmatic outlook.

Not sure. If all fans had not listened to him, he would have easily surpassed 900,000 votes by now.

I am going to be away for a few days to a few weeks. I took part in the Philippines Typhon rescue and have had some PTSD issues as a result. Going back to the Philippines with the group I've been in is supposed to help us all. I hope someone will pick up the News for awhile. I will be back to do it but don't know the time line.

Go Lakers!

$68m right there. Obviously Love would be joining in 2015, where if we didn't commit any salaries past the 2014, we'd be at $50m already (so we'd be unable to give Love the max).
