D.J. Augustin hasn't exactly filled the shoes of the injured Derrick Rose, but he's certainly provided a spark since signing with the Bulls on Dec. 13.

After failing to score in double figures in 10 games with Toronto, he's averaged 11.5 points while leading Chicago (19-20) in assists in 11 of 19. The Bulls are 11-8 with Augustin on the roster and 7-2 in 2014.

Augustin has put up 18.0 points and 6.3 assists per game while hitting 9 of 18 from 3-point range in his last three. He came off the bench to score 19 with eight assists in a 103-78 win over visiting Philadelphia on Saturday.

''I'm just going out there, playing freely, doing whatever coach (Tom Thibodeau) needs me to do, whatever my teammates need me to do,'' Augustin said. ''Basically, just trying to get them the ball, trying to get them open. At the same time, coach wanted me to look (to score) for myself.''

Lakers' Week 12 in review

By Eric Pincus
January 20, 2014, 6:00 a.m.

The Lakers finally broke out of their extended slump midway through Week 12.

Injuries have derailed the Lakers' season but the team got some rare good news when an MRI on Pau Gasol's toe showed a manageable strained tendon.

Listed as a game-time decision, Gasol was able to play on Tuesday against the Cleveland Cavaliers, but the Lakers still lost a close one, 120-118.

After the game, Nick Young acknowledged that "it's hard to be a Lakers fan," given the team' struggles.

Kobe Bryant (knee), Steve Nash (back), Steve Blake (elbow), Jordan Farmar (hamstring) and Xavier Henry (knee) remained sidelined.

Henry's comeback was slowed after he experienced knee soreness, knocking him out at least another week.

To put the year in perspective, the team's lineup of Kendall Marshall, Jodie Meeks, Wesley Johnson, Robert Sacre and Gasol became their second-most-used starting group of the season. Arguably, only Gasol and Johnson were predicted to be starters before the season began -- and that's iffy on Johnson.

Young was a flashpoint of controversy after getting into a scuffle in a 121-114 loss to the Phoenix Suns, earning a one-game suspension for throwing punches after a hard foul.

In an interview, Magic Johnson took an opportunity to blast Lakers owner/executive

Preview: Lakers at Chicago Bulls

By Eric Pincus
January 20, 2014, 10:00 a.m.

In their fourth contest on a seven-game road trip, the Lakers (16-25) visit the Chicago Bulls (19-2) on Monday night.

The Bulls have managed to win seven of their last 10 games, climbing back into the top eight in the Eastern Conference (sixth) despite losing Derrick Rose to another knee injury.

Chicago also traded Luol Deng to the Cleveland Cavaliers for former Lakers center Andrew Bynum, whose non-guaranteed contract was waived -- saving Chicago from the luxury tax.

The Lakers continue to play without Kobe Bryant (knee), Steve Nash (back), Steve Blake (elbow), Jordan Farmar (hamstring) and Xavier Henry (knee).

Key matchup

Joakim Noah has emerged as the leader of the Bulls, who win games by playing defense.

Through 38 games, Noah is averaging 11.7 points, 11 rebounds and 1.3 blocks a game. Noah is also a steady playmaker, dishing 3.8 assists a night.

The Lakers are also heavily reliant on their center, but for his offense above all.

Gasol is scoring 16.3 points, 9.8 rebounds. 1.4 blocks and 3.4 assists a game.

Noah will make the night difficult for Gasol. The question will be, will the Lakers in turn be able to defend the Bulls?

X-factor

Taj Gibson's offense is up and down but the USC product is averaging 11.7 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 28.1 minutes a night.

Lakers continue sojourn in Chicago
Published January 20, 2014Sports Network
(SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Lakers have picked up two straight wins on their Grammy road trip and will try for a third in a row Monday night when they take on the Chicago Bulls.

The Lakers, who will play game four of a seven-game eastern swing, defeated the Boston Celtics on Friday night, then on Sunday, took out the Atlantic Division-leading Toronto Raptors, 112-106.

L.A. was down 19 in the second quarter and 17 in the third, but was led by Nick Young in the fourth. He scored 15 of his game-high 29 points over the final 12 minutes to give the Lakers the comeback victory.

It was the first time the Lakers secured back-to-back wins since mid-December.

Pau Gasol finished with 22 points and nine rebounds, Ryan Kelly added 17 points and Kendall Marshall netted 10 with 11 assists for the victors. Jodie Meeks chipped in 11 points.

The Lakers still have to visit the two-time defending champion Miami Heat, Orlando Magic and New York Knicks on this long road trip

LAKERS-BULLS PREVIEW
By Taylor Bechtold | January 19, 2014

The Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers are both looking to extend positive stretches, and it's a former cast-off leading the way for both teams.

Chicago seeks its eighth win in 10 games while denying Los Angeles its first three-game winning streak in two months Monday night at the United Center.

"I'm just going out there, playing freely, doing whatever coach (Tom Thibodeau) needs me to do, whatever my teammates need me to do," Augustin said. "Basically, just trying to get them the ball, trying to get them open. At the same time, coach wanted me to look (to score) for myself."

Joakim Noah, who had 21 points and 16 rebounds, has averaged 13.5 boards during a career-best stretch of 12 straight games with double-digit rebounds. He finished with 18 points and 17 boards in a 90-81 loss in the most recent meeting with the Lakers on March 10 at Staples Center.

The Bulls hope to get back to .500 with their sixth win in seven home games, while the Lakers (16-25) go for their first three-game winning streak since Nov. 17-24.

After suffering their 12th loss in 13 games on Wednesday - 121-114 at Phoenix - to open a seven-game trip, they rallied from eight down with 4:12 to play to beat Boston 107-104 on Friday.

The Last Emperor

BY VALERIEMORALES - JAN 20TH, 2014 AT 8:59 AM

It happened first as a player, he won a championship. And then it happened as a coach, he was a builder of championships. The difference between the two was subtle- one relied on performance, the other relied on trust. Still both were his body of work. It is his legacy of being in the league for so long that there is a Phil Jackson romance, this winner of eleven coaching rings, the emperor of the triangle. He had a certain way of treating the men who played for him. He encouraged toughness and relied on connectivity and urged his players to stand their ground.

Start with glory. It needs pain. Otherwise how do you know what it is? In a way this is the subtext of coaching, creating the definitions, knowing how to hand players a system that will manage their egocentricity. Phil Jackson repeatedly did this with his Bulls teams and his Lakers teams, so thoroughly that in one city he won six times and in another city he won five times. And yet if it was all peeled away with a paring knife, if the titles of Phil Jackson were gone, and the moments disintegrated into a pile of dust. If the fights with management were walked all the way back. If Kobe’s stubbornness and skill, and Michael’s brilliance and dominance and a 72 win season, if all of that was buried in some grave overlooking some exotic sea, what would be left?

This would be left. He would extract selfishness from the game. He would dig out love. He would draw a circle between what is human and what is possible. The circle is the team. It was the team in Chicago and the team in Los Angeles and if he coached anywhere else it would be that too. For there are certain things that make a team whole. They trust. They respect. They forgive. They share. They compete. It is the unheard footprints of basketball, the unseen holy grail.

Lakers: Week 13 predictions

Miami's LeBron James is fouled by Charlotte's Gerald Henderson at Time Warner Cable Arena on Saturday. (Chuck Burton / Associated Press / January 18, 2014)
By Eric Pincus
January 20, 2014, 8:00 a.m.

The Lakers finish their seven-game road trip with visits to Chicago, Miami, Orlando and New York.

After a lengthy slump, the Lakers have won two straight road games. Injuries are still an issue with Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Steve Blake, Jordan Farmar and Xavier Henry out.

Henry (knee) is tentatively scheduled to be reevaluated before the end of the week.

Through 42 games, the Lakers have 16 wins, matching cumulative expectations at 16-25.

Monday at Chicago Bulls

The Bulls (19-20) aren't the team they were expected to be. Derrick Rose was lost for months with a knee injury. The team traded Luol Deng for luxury tax relief, but even with all that -- Chicago has been surging of late.

Chicago also agreed to terms on a trade for Tornike Shengelia of the Brooklyn Nets for Marquis Teague. Neither will be available on Monday because the league office is closed until Tuesday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The Lakers have a real chance to extend their win streak to three, but playing on the second night of a back-to-back against Chicago's strong defensive unit won't be easy.

Prediction: Bulls

Thursday at Miami Heat

The Lakers played well against the Heat (29-11) on Christmas but ultimately fell 101-95. Miami at home (16-3) is even more of a challenge.

LeBron James is shooting 58.3% from the field with 26.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 6.6 assists a game this season.

Dwyane Wade has been hobbled with a knee injury.

The Lakers have a lot more injuries to deal with. Even at full strength, the Lakers would have a difficult time getting a win in Miami.

Prediction: Heat

Kobe Bryant and Lakers still have no timetable for return
AP 9:45 p.m. EST January 20, 2014

CHICAGO (AP) — Kobe Bryant is riding a bike. That's about all he can do right now, so he's trying not to think about when he might be able to play again for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Bryant broke a bone in his left knee Dec. 17 at Memphis while playing his fourth game in five nights, likely sidelining the superstar guard for six weeks. The injury against the Grizzlies occurred in his sixth game back after he missed the start of the season while recovering from a torn left Achilles tendon.

The pair of injuries for the 35-year-old Bryant raised questions about whether he would ever return to his previous form. But he said Monday night he had no doubt he would play at a similarly high level again.

TEAM USA: Kobe won't play in 2016 Olympics

LAKERS: Kendall Marshall shedding bust label

"There was before I came back the first time because I didn't know how my Achilles was going to respond to playing and changing directions," Bryant said before the Lakers played the Bulls in Chicago. "The game in Memphis I had a pretty good feel for it, getting back to being able to do what I normally could do. I feel confident about it. I did play that second half on a fractured leg and played pretty well. I feel pretty good about my chances."

But the rehab from the knee injury has been slow going so far. The 15-time All-Star said he is limited to mostly bike work right now and any talk of a return is up in the air until he returns to the court.

"Try not to think about it too much," he said. "Just go day to day."

Gibson Layup at OT Buzzer Lifts Bulls Over Lakers

CHICAGO January 21, 2014 (AP)

By JAY COHEN AP Sports Writer

Associated Press

Taj Gibson made a layup at the buzzer in overtime, lifting the Chicago Bulls to a 102-100 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night.

With nine-tenths of a second left, Mike Dunleavy inbounded from underneath the basket and found Gibson cutting down the middle. The athletic forward then muscled toward the hoop for the winning basket, which was confirmed by a video review by the officials.

Joakim Noah had 17 points, 21 rebounds and six assists for Chicago (20-20), which has won eight of 10 to get back to .500 for the first time since Nov. 27. D.J. Augustin had a season-high 27 points, and Jimmy Butler finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Nick Young had 31 points for the Lakers (16-26), including a tying baseline jumper with 6 seconds left in overtime. The streaky sub also made three free throws with 4.1 seconds left in regulation, tying it at 93.

The Lakers scored the first five points in overtime, but Augustin led the Bulls right back. After Gibson made two foul shots, Augustin hit a tying 3-pointer and drove inside for a layup that gave Chicago a 100-98 lead with 1:30 left.

Augustin was 10 for 16 from the field, including a 5-for-7 performance from beyond the arc. He shouldered the load at the point for most of the game after Kirk Hinrich departed in the third with a hamstring injury.
