Lakers get Carmelo Anthony and Knicks in final stop of eventful trip

In one more sign for badly sinking Lakers, Anthony broke Kobe Bryant's scoring record at Madison Square Garden on Friday. Angst has marked Grammy trip, with Pau Gasol the latest to express frustration.

By Mike Bresnahan
January 25, 2014, 3:44 p.m.

NEW YORK — It started buzzing through the Lakers' locker room and had nothing to do with Pau Gasol angrily challenging teammates a few minutes earlier or Mike D'Antoni continuing to pick on the always-soggy defense.

Kobe Bryant's scoring record at Madison Square Garden was broken Friday by New York forward Carmelo Anthony, as if the bad signs couldn't get any worse for a quickly sinking team.

Anthony had 62 points against Charlotte, topping Bryant by one, and a quick look at the schedule had the Lakers playing next against, of course, the Knicks.

Bryant had already exited the Orlando arena Friday and there was a minor attempt to pull him off the team bus to talk for a minute about Anthony's heroics. It failed.

So the rest of the Lakers were asked about Anthony, who made 23 of 35 shots in the Knicks' 125-96 victory. Bryant, for the record, made 19 of 31 shots, and all 20 of his free throws, in the Lakers' 126-117 victory over New York in February 2009.

That Lakers team was on a roll, eventually winning the first of two consecutive championships. This Lakers team is merely happy when it doesn't get embarrassed.

Primer for Lakers fans: Understanding the NBA draft lottery

By Eric Pincus
January 25, 2014, 12:32 p.m.

Lakers fans might not be especially familiar with the NBA draft lottery.

With multiple injuries and a 16-28 record, the Lakers have the seventh-worst record in the league.

A full 8½ games behind eighth-place Dallas (25-20) -- technically 9½ since the Mavericks have the head-to-head tiebreaker -- the Lakers are a near-lock to miss the playoffs.

On May 20, the NBA will hold the lottery, assigning 1,000, four-digit combinations to 14 teams.

The franchise with the worst record will receive 250 combinations, giving it a 25% chance of landing the first pick and a 64.3% chance of at least getting a top-three selection. The worst-case scenario, with 35.7% odds, has the top team drafting fourth overall.

The team with the second-worst record receives 199 combinations, third gets 156, fourth 119 and so on. Where the Lakers currently stand, they'd have only 43 combinations, giving the club a 4.3% chance at the top pick and 15% odds of a top-three selection.

If the Lakers finish two spots lower in the standings, their odds at the No. 1 pick increase to 8.8% and top three to 29.2%.

The last time the Lakers hit the lottery they were awarded the 10th pick in the 2005 draft. They used it to select 7-foot center Andrew Bynum, who ultimately helped the team win two NBA titles.

The Lakers also drafted 10th in 1994, taking guard Eddie Jones. While Jones became an All-Star with the Lakers, the team didn't win a championship until they traded him to the Charlotte Hornets (now New Orleans Pelicans) for forward Glen Rice in 1999.

Pau Gasol on state of Los Angeles Lakers: ‘We are who we are right now’

BY HAYDEN KANE - JAN 25TH, 2014 AT 1:02 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers are now 16-28 on the season. Pending something miraculous, they will miss the playoffs and any sense of relevance for the 2013-2014 season is far in their rear view mirror after losing Kobe Bryant to another injury.

It all must feel like a bad dream for Pau Gasol. Constantly the subject of trade rumors the last number of years, he ended up staying in L.A. and being forced to labor along with the rest of what is now a decidedly mediocre team.

Gasol is not happy about the situation, and he expressed as much after the team’s loss to the Orlando Magic on Friday night (quotes from ESPN LA):

We are who we are right now…Some nights are better than others but, bottom line, when you lose against the worst teams in the league, you got to ask yourself why and, kind of, what does that make you?”
A dependent player, Gasol is still finding success in terms of individual statistics: he is averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds a game. He would surely trade a few points per game, however, for more help and to be on a team that matters.

If you’re going to bad in the NBA, you might as well bottom out and be really bad. The Lakers are doing just that, sitting ahead of only the Utah Jazz in the Western Conference standings.

LOS ANGELES AT NEW YORK

All eyes will be on New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony when he steps onto the hardwood at Madison Square Garden for the first time since his performance for the ages.

He just might be in line for another big game against the defensively challenged Los Angeles Lakers.

Anthony will try to build on the highest individual scoring effort in the long history of the arena Sunday when his New York Knicks take on the road-weary Lakers.

The seven-time All-Star put together an unforgettable show in a 125-96 win over Charlotte on Friday, breaking the franchise and current Madison Square Garden records with 62 points.

Anthony had 56 points after three quarters, bettering Kevin Durant's previous season high of 54. He needed only a few minutes of the fourth to break Bernard King's Knicks record of 60 set in 1984 and Kobe Bryant's arena record of 61 set five years ago.

''I made history, with the performance, but just to be a part of that group of people, like I said, there's only a small group of people that knows what that zone feels like and tonight I was one of them,'' said Anthony, who added 13 rebounds.

With Andrea Bargnani (elbow), Amare Stoudemire (ankle), Metta World Peace (knee) and Kenyon Martin (ankle) sidelined in the frontcourt, Anthony led New York (16-27) to its first win on an eight-game homestand after dropping the first three.

The league's second-leading scorer shot 23 for 35 from the field, hitting six 3-pointers - including a midcourt shot at the halftime buzzer - and all 10 free-throw attempts.

LAKERS-KNICKS PREVIEW
By Taylor Bechtold | January 25, 2014

The league's second-leading scorer shot 23 for 35 from the field, hitting six 3-pointers - including a midcourt shot at the halftime buzzer - and all 10 free-throw attempts.

Remarkably, Anthony did not commit a turnover in 38 minutes - recording the most points without a giveaway since individual turnovers were first recorded in 1977-78.

Now Anthony needs to score 38 to surpass Bryant's 100 for the most points over a two-game stretch at the Garden since the 1985-86 season. Bryant had 39 points there Dec. 23, 2007, before setting the then-arena record in his next visit Feb. 2, 2009.
