In a Gun Fight with a Butter Knife… The Pacers have lost just 9 games. Nearly all of those have come on the road. So, if they’re vulnerable, it’s in a game like this at the end of a road trip.

The Lakers brought the right energy in the first half, they were tighter defensively, although struggling on the defensive glass. D’Antoni dialed in his lineups and rotations better and they were still tied at halftime despite the rebounding issues.

It was tribute night at Staples for Jerry Buss. He probably would have been proud of the first half effort by the undermanned Lakers (who have a league leading 148 games missed due to injuries). But the third quarter came, and the Lakers were promptly outscored 10-2 to open the half. The Pacers seemed to take control of the game at this point and never give it up.

The Lakers would trim it down some, but never get back within striking distance before finally fading into the night 104-92.

“We’re outmanned pretty much in every game,” BScott said afterward. “It’s like going into a gun fight with a butter knife.”

The Pacers road record is several games better than the Lakers home record. The only teams the Lakers are keeping pace with these days are battling for lottery position – of those the Cavs, Celtics, Magic all lost tonight. To get to 44 wins right now and a chance at the post season, the Lakers would have to win 78% of their remaining games. That means suddenly turning it on for the remainder of the season and winning at the same rate these Pacers have played. That’s just for a chance to make the playoffs.

The Grammy road trip and this home game against a leading contender has just about sunk the Lakers. With news that Kobe will be re-evaluated in another three weeks and no guarantee of return shortly after that, Kupchak may be tempted to make some moves to help cement the Lakers in the cellar in the next three weeks.

Gasol -- -- He tweaked his groin and stayed in the locker room a little longer at halftime to get it worked on. Defensively, he didn’t seem like he had his legs after that and that made shot challenging and board, which he already struggles at, even harder. Something to keep an eye on. He still managed to get another double-double. He and Kendall worked a lot of the two-man game and Pau mixed in his iso touches in the post. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 10-19 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 13 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He lost the ball in the post on the first possession. He attacked across the lane and missed the fade. He missed a good look at his lefty jumphook. He ball faked and swished a sideline jumper over his man with the shotclock low. He missed a 12-footer off the two-man game. He missed a lefty jumphook badly. He took the bounce pass from Harris and hit the short one at the front of the rim next time down. He missed a face-up wing jumper. He spun, his man reached, Pau pulled it in and hit the jumper over him from the top of the lane. He sank the elbow jumper off the two-man game with Marshall. He hesitated on a baseline jumper, then threw it away instead of shooting, points the other way. He sank a FT jumper off the two-man game with Marshall. He had 10 points on 5-10 shooting and 6 boards. Second Half: He missed an 18-footer. He backed West down and hit the turnaround over him, but he was shaking his head after the move as if in pain. He missed a top-of-the-key jumper. He swished a baseline jumper. He banged his way into the paint and hit the And-1 turnaround from 12 feet out, he made the FT. He settled against West and missed the long jumper (post him up). He tipped back in a Meeks miss getting out in transition. He sank an elbow jumper.

Meeks -- -- He just scratched and clawed his was to the 21 points. Didn’t seem like he had that kind of game, but Meeks has been able to find ways to score consistently. He seems to always get one or two of those bust-out scores per game. He’ll usually knock down a couple of threes. Then, you combine a backdoor play a few FTs and he’s in that 15- to 20-point range. He had an MRI on his foot yesterday and it was clear. He still got it done offensively. Wish Meeks could board like Stephenson…wow, 14 rebounds from your SG. That’s impressive. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 7-16 shooting (2-8 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 33 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He missed a good look at a wing three. He got tapped on a corner three. He swiped the ball from his man, used his body well to shield a defender and took it for a layup. He swiped the ball from his man in a crowd. He worked off a very high screen and drained the three. He busted out, took the tipped outlet pass and dunked with both hands. He got tapped on a wing three out of a timeout. He was picked on the sideline for a layup the other way. He had 7 points on 3-6 shooting (1-4 from three) and 2 steals. Second Half: Quick counter strike after a made FT and he drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He missed a step-back 20-footer. He cut baseline and Marshall threaded the pass to him for the And-1 reverse, he made the FT. He swished the corner three off the kickout from Kelly. He missed a three off the screen. He cut off Kelly, took the bounce pass and scored the layup. He missed a corner three. He missed a scoop in transition, but Pau cleaned it up. He missed a wing three. He missed a prayer getting caught in the lane on a drive. He was fouled for FTs and made both. He attacked with speed in transition and scored a layup.

Marshall -- -- Pretty good game from Marshall against a tough team. He really showed some of his craftiness in the lane for scores and, of course, with the pass. He had 13 assists with just 1 turnover on some very effective floor general work. While he had his usual pocket passes off the two-man game, he also had some nice feeds to cutters. The Lakers need more slashers off ball for him, but we don’t have a lot of that on this team right now. It will be interesting if Nash is able to make it back. I’d like to see both Nash and Marshall in the battle (not at the same time), but just engaged in the battle so that Nash can give KButter some good input and Kendall can learn from him. Being able to watch Nash at work and his in-between game, especially, could really help him grow. The thought of Nash on the court, though, still seems improbable. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-11 shooting (1-3 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 13 assists, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 39 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He drained a 15-footer from the left side working off the two-man game. He hit Johnson busting out for a layup. He sank a jumper standing on the three line behind a Pau screen straight away to help end a Laker scoreless streak. He drained a wing three on an inbounds pass for the Lakers next score. He looked off a defender on a drive but missed the layup at the end of the quarter. He worked the two-man game and hit Pau for the open jumper. He missed a wing jumper off the two-man game, way short. He set up Pau for the FT jumper off the two-man game. He hit Hill for the one-hander probing off a screen next time down. He threw a pass into the defender’s legs, layup the other way. Wow, great sequence at the end of the half, he attacked to his left, went behind his back to go right, spun back to his left, cut to his right around a defender and dumped it off to Hill for the layup with 0.6…that was crafty as (bleep). He had 7 points on 3-5 shooting and 8 assists with 1 turnover at the half. Second Half: He missed a long three. He missed a layup after a herky-jerky move in transition, should have had that one. He threaded a sweet backdoor pass to Meeks off the dribble for the And-1 reverse. He attacked the paint and was blocked out of bounds. He threaded a bounce pass to Hill for the reverse jam. Just a perfect lob to Young backdoor for the jam. He attacked, used his body well and scored the And-1 layup over a big, he missed the FT. He attacked Hill, ball-faked under the basket and powered up the layup. He missed a wide open wing three.

Johnson -- -- I wish we had more games like this from Wes. He didn’t do much scoring wise, but he was active on the boards early on. The team needs that from him and there’s no reason he can’t give that with his athleticism. He was skying high for rebounds in crowds. When he hits those boards from the SF spot, it makes a big difference. He matched up with both George and Stephenson, at times. George shot a poor 4-21 for the game. Wes can’t fade from the action and disappear. He needs to go after those double-digit boards every night. “We just got to go out there and play hard and sustain it for the whole game,” he said afterward. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-7 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 10 boards (2 offensive), 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 31 minutes. He was a-8. The Action: He busted out in transition and took the long outlet from Marshall for the layup. Great help D from behind to block a shot. He missed a layup in transition off that. He stepped on the sideline for a turnover. After a good rebound on one end, he drained the corner three on the other. He missed a sideline three. He sank an 18-footer working to his left off a screen. He had 7 points on 3-5 shooting and 4 boards at the half. Second Half: He missed a wing jumper. He skied for the offensive board, but missed the short jumper.

Kelly -- -- He helped spark the Lakers in the fourth quarter on their brief run. Good job getting to the FT line during that stretch. No one else on the Lakers really did. That’s a big problem for the team, obviously. The Pacers went after him with David West to start the game with several early scores. D’Antoni changed his rotations and started Hill in the second half to avoid the carnage. Kelly responded well to that and had some better minutes in that second half. “If it’s too much of a matchup we’ll put somebody else out there, but he does a good job,” D’Antoni said. These are learning minutes for Kelly, so despite the losses you hope he gets better because of it. “I’m not the player I’m going to be in the future, so I’ve got to continue to grow and take advantage of the opportunity,” Kelly said. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 2-7 shooting (0-2 from three, 6-7 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 3 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: A couple scores for West on iso. Kelly ball faked, attacked off the three line and banked in the floater over the D. He blocked Hibbert from behind. He missed a running bank hard off the glass and was scored on at the other end a few seconds later. Second Half: He let a man fly by, moved in closer and airballed the jumper. He drew FTs on the defensive glass, he made both. He up-faked and missed a 21-footer. He drew FTs after getting hit on a three, he made all three. He lost his man with a change of pace and hit the floater. He swiped a pass on the other end, pushed it out and hit Meeks for the three. He hit Meeks cutting for the layup. He missed a wing three. He rejected Scola on iso, then put in a good challenge on another big to get a stop. He missed a wing three set up for him out of a timeout. He attacked baseline and drew FTs, he made one.

Young -- -- The Lakers might have had a fighting chance that second half had be not been stone cold. He was 2-9 in the second half and that made for a dull edge to the Lakers attack. Defensively, he seemed a step slow. No swagger in Swaggy P tonight. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-16 shooting (1-7 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He backed it out and missed a long chuck badly, not sure if he even hit rim. He missed a wing three trying to draw a foul. He curled off a screen and drew FTs as he rose up, he made one. He probed the lane and had his jumper rattle out. He swished an open wing three on a kickout. He swished a pull-up attacking off the high screen. He missed a wing three in transition. He let his man fly by and moved in for the easy open baseline jumper. He had 8 points on 3-7 shooting. Second Half: He scored a layup down the middle of the lane. He missed a long wing jumper. He slammed off the backdoor lob from Marshall. He missed a long three. He missed a 17-footer curling off the screen. He airballed a sideline three next time down. He missed an easy FT jumper he should have had. He choked a transition layup that could have cut it to 5. He was blocked from behind on what looked like a possible dunk attempt.

Hill -- -- We needed more of a power lineup in this game against the Pacers and eventually D’Antoni settled on running Hill a little more. He got a double-double and allowed Kelly to match up better with the opponent’s bench. He put Hill in there to start the third quarter, but Pau was still in the locker room with injury treatment. Some nice chemistry with Marshall and Hill. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-10 shooting to go with 12 boards, 1 assists, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He had a +/- of 0. The Action: He missed a wing jumper on the pick and pop. He popped out and sank the wing jumper when Sacre rolled to the hoop to draw the D. He threw a dangerous outlet just over the hands of the D at midcourt, luckily it was tipped to Meeks who took it for the dunk. He missed a short jumphook he probably should have finished. He dunked in the post when a guard went for a steal, good rim run by Hill to force that mismatch. He hit the one-hander off the two-man game with Marshall. Marshall broke down the D and dumped it right to Hill for the layup at the end of the half. He had 8 points on 4-6 shooting and 7 boards at the half. Second Half: He missed an 18-footer after setting a screen, should have set up a little closer to the hoop before the pass came. He airballed a jumphook in the post. He was called for a travel getting pushed on his post move, horrible call. He missed a tip. He set the screen, took the bounce pass on the baseline and reverse jammed.

Harris -- -- He struggled to finish or score from the perimeter. Just not his night and tough to go against a top-tier opponent. We needed him to attack, draw contact and get to the line. The Lakers need that from someone right now as we get too little of it. Let’s see how he responds to the donut game in the next one. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-6 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 18 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He stepped into an open wing three and clanked it badly. He crossed over and missed the one-handed bank he probably should have had. He missed a wing three in transition. He probed from the wing, drew the D and bounced it to Pau for the score. His interior pass was picked off after a nice drive. He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting but had 3 boards and 2 assists. Second Half: He missed a baseline jumper. He missed a layup pushing the dribble out. He attacked and missed a flip-in attempt on a reverse.

Sacre -- -- He got to start the second half briefly while Pau was getting work in the locker room. Not much impact from Sacre, but solid for a third string bigman. He had a couple moments defensively, but there is just too little impact out there when we have too many low-impact ballers. Still, important minutes for him experience-wise. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and 4 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He missed a wing jumper. Second Half: He missed an elbow jumper off the two-man sequence.

D’Antoni -- -- Good energy from the Lakers to start the game, but they had issues with the Kelly vs. West matchup. The Lakers trailed 13-10 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Out of that, he sat Wes, Meeks and Kelly for Harris, Young and Hill… The Lakers struggled a little briefly before Pau and Marshall righted the ship. When the next timeout came, D’Antoni didn’t sit those two for his usual rotation… With the Lakers down 3 with 1:29 left, he finally sat Pau for Sacre… The Lakers trailed 22-19 after the first quarter. They held the Pacers to 39% shooting. The Lakers shot the same and made just 1-6 from three. Pacers getting to the offensive boards… He started a Sacre, Hill, Young, Harris, Meeks unit… The Lakers tied it up 28-28 after 3 minutes and forced a timeout… Down 32-30, he brought in Pau, Wes and Kendall for Meeks, Sacre and Harris… The Lakers took a 1-point lead with 4 minutes left and forced a timeout… He brought back in Kelly out of that timeout… Another timeout shortly later and he brought in Meeks for Young. He went bigger with Hill, finally… The Lakers were tied 49-49 at the half. The Lakers shot 49% (22-45, 4-13 3PT, 1-2 FT). They had just 6 turnovers, but the Pacers had only 2. The Pacers shot 40% (21-52, 2-11 3PT, 5-12 FT). They had a 9-1 advantage on the offensive glass… To open the second half, he went with Sacre and Hill as Pau stayed in the locker room. Pau had to stretch out a tweaked groin but was back a minute and a half later… A 10-2 start for the Pacers. D’Antoni complained about a horrible travel call against Hill that was clearly a foul… He brought in Young and Harris for Meeks and Johnson, Lakers down 7… He brought in Kelly for Hill… The Lakers trailed 79-69 after the third… He started a Sacre, Kelly, Young, Harris, Meeks unit. This might do them in for good unless someone goes off for the Lakers… He brought in Wes for Manny, who was having a poor game… Kelly helping spark the Lakers and they cut a 12-point lead down to 7 and force a timeout… He sat Sacre and Young for Pau and Marshall, Lakers back down 14 after a few misses by Young… They traded hoops but the Lakers couldn’t crack the double-digit Pacer lead…

I miss the days when I could watch a Laker game with an expectation of a win.

Typo with Jerry West instead of Buss.

MDA took out Hill with 2:34 to go in the third when he had a double-double already then didnt' bring him back until it was far too late in the fourth.

Why would he think Kelly could handle West or Hibbert is beyond me. You shouldn't need to see 4-5 minutes of game to determine that.

(Though when he brought back Kelly against reserves he did fare much better to his credit)

Team tired from the trip?

Kelly is a surprisingly bad rebounder on top of being (so far?) a weak defender. Not a very promising combination.

Hill brought energy, but seemingly can only play effectively in spurts

Hill was beaten off the dribble by West, like how Kelly was beatened by Melo

Rare that a team that can only play 2nd/3rd string/D League olayers can hope to beat the team with the best record.

Lakers are bringing a (butter) knife to a gun fight

Meeks is deserving of a 5-6 mil a year for 3-4 years contract.

Hope he gets it somewhere. He's an under the radar guy so he may only end up getting ~3m a year.

Hope we trade him before he gets his contract in order to get something in return.
