Someone wrote a novel or two continuing the Blade Runner story. I read the first one. It wasn't great. |

Ugh...
Aliens might have something left (not much). But Blade Runner? Not to mention part of the appeal of the original was the aesthetics. They'll probably come up with some (bleep) CGI L.A. and do away with the gritty, lived in nature of the original. _________________ *sighs*

Well-put as usual. BR has been playing recently on cable. The story isn't mindblowing, exactly, it's mostly the look. If today's movie crews were prevented from using CGI at all, I'd still be surprised if they could pull off the things they had to do to achieve that kind of dirty/grubby look, or that ethereal, glittery look of the women/backgrounds, etc. Very beautiful movie, even from a non-superfan. The old crumbling hotel facade in the face off between Rutger and Harrison was great. Dunno if it was real, but the layering was impressive (Deckard scratching his way thru the ceiling to get away, looked like an authentic 3D scape even though you could tell where painted backgrounds existed in that scene). Sean Young was beautiful in that, too, I don't blame Deckard for wanting to keep her around a little longer than the other replicants.
The original has Lloyd from The Shining in it as well. Bonus points. Rutger gave it to him bad, though. Ouch. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

Blade Runner had one of the greatest scores of all time and its aesthetics, especially at that time were unbelievable. Ridley seriously made that world look real. Unbelievable set design and production value. |

It's only great because it did everything before everyone else. It defined the genre.
But it's not that good of a movie. It hasn't aged well.
Fifth Element does everything that Blade Runner does but better. _________________ Kobe |

Apples and Oranges. Blade Runner is dark, moody, gritty. The Fifth element is bright, fun and downright crazy at times. No doubt the Fifth Element was inspired by BR, but it's a totally different type of film. A better comparison would be Ghost in the Shell. _________________ *sighs*

On the contrary Blade Runner is still a great movie today. Its a cinematographic masterpiece, studied in film schools. The noir style was very well done. It doesn't have the big explosions or dramatic showdowns as commercial hollywood films. It builds slowly and the audience learns more about Ford's character, and the last 'human' act of the Hauer's replicant character. Its not the movie for the typical popcorn crowd.
I enjoyed 5th element too, but its more of a campy movie. _________________ The journey to 17 begins... |

Ghost in the shell (by that I mean Stand Alone Complex and Second Gig) is really really good, and I agree that they take parts of Blade Runner to a whole new level, but it's also about a bunch of other things.
The movie that preceded those series, however, on itself I don't think is good enough to say it beats out Blade Runner. So that's why I mentioned Fifth Element instead (which I know isn't entirely the same), because that would be movie compared to movie, instead of movie compared to series. _________________ Kobe |

Its style is dark and depressing. If you're into that kind of thing, good for you. Add in a plot that moves at a snail's pace and you have a film that I would never want to watch after the first viewing. I have seen it more than once however, due to its acclaim and its place in film schools, as you point out. I have to report I didn't like it the second time either. The darkness and depressing qualities are the same reasons why I don't have any interest in re-watching the Christopher Nolan Batman films, although at least those have a quicker pace to them. And this is coming from a huge fan of Breaking Bad, which starts its seasons out with a slow burn. When it is done right, it is great. Blade Runner takes it too far. |

Yah that dystopia subject and really dark enviroment is definately not for everyone. Commercially it did poorly. tI can understand, my brothers don't like the movie. But my friends who are into film making love it. I think its more of a niche movie, but for that niche, its a landmark film. _________________ The journey to 17 begins... |

I'll never get tired of watching Blade Runner, even the alternate versions in the 25th anniversary set. Infinitely interesting to look at, listen to and interpret.
After Prometheus from the original director of Alien himself, I have low expectations for both revivals... but who knows. _________________ -Avenue of the Champions- -RIP Dr Buss- #824 |

I was recently walking through Times Square in the late evening....it looked quite like the LA of Blade Runner.
As an adaptation of something PKD wrote....I thought Blade Runner wasn't exactly faithful to its source...in fact, it missed several key points of the PKD narrative. It's strength wasn't in the plot or even the acting though...it was in the presentation...the atmosphere and the cinematography. It literally invented the Cyberpunk/Neo-Noir genre. It presented a grimy dystopian future. The concept of the dystopia wasn't original, but the way it looked in Blade Runner was.
Could a good sequel be made here in this universe? Sure. I don't think Hollywood can do it though. |

First trailer for Blade Runner 2049 released:
Not a big fan of Ryan Gosling but playing soft-spoken, brooding loners is in his wheelhouse.

The first Blade Runner novel wasn't particularly good either. Actually it was one of those rare instances where the film outshined the book. |
