Quote:
O’Brien names Fitzpatrick the starting quarterback in Houston

New Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt opted to cut Ryan Fitzpatrick in lieu of paying him the reasonable sum of $3.25 million for 2014. New Texans coach Bill O’Brien has embraced Fitzpatrick the team’s new starter.

Via multiple reports, O’Brien has named Fitzpatrick the starting quarterback in Houston. Cut in early 2013 by the Bills after getting a long-term deal in 2011 and dumped this year by Tennessee, Fitzpatrick is on track to start a game for his fifth franchise.

As a rookie in 2005, Fitzpatrick started three times for the Rams. In 2008, when Carson Palmer was dealing with elbow issues, Fitzpatrick made 13 starts in Cincinnati. He started 53 games for Buffalo from 2009 through 2012, and nine last year with the Titans.

The decision means that Fitzpatrick won’t lose reps to a “competition” with Tom Savage, T.J. Yates, or Case Keenum. Still, it’s hard not to imagine O’Brien flipping the switch to Savage if/when Fitzpatrick struggles.

The move likely won’t do much (if anything) to change receiver Andre Johnson’s position. He’s holding out not for a new contract but a new team. And he likely won’t be impressed with the team’s new starting quarterback.

Former NFL receiver Reche Caldwell arrested again, this time for allegedly selling Ecstasy

Reche Caldwell has gone from an NFL career to a life of crime.

Caldwell was arrested Tuesday in Tampa and accused of selling the drug Ecstasy, according to TBO.com. He was released from jail on Wednesday after posting a $2,000 bond. Caldwell faces one felony charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, according to jail records.

This is Caldwell’s second arrest in the past five months.

Caldwell, 35, was arrested in January for allegedly running an illegal gambling operation in Tampa with two other men. According to jail records, Caldwell has been arrested four times in Tampa since 2009.

Prior to Caldwell’s criminal problems, he was standout receiver at the University of Florida, and eventually became a second-round pick by the San Diego Chargers in 2002. Caldwell was an underachiever throughout his career, but he had 760 receiving yards and four touchdowns with the Patriots in 2006. He spent the 2007 season with the Washington Redskins before his career ended.

Broncos receiver Andre Caldwell is Reche’s younger brother. Andre Caldwell signed a two-year deal worth up to $3.45 million with the Broncos this offseason. He is expected to move up Denver’s depth chart after Eric Decker’s signing with the New York Jets during free agency.

When Reche Caldwell was on the Chargers we called him Ricochet because when you passed him the ball it would Ricochet off his hands like he was allergic to catching it.

He should have been jailed for felony impersonation of a NFL Wide Receiver.

I will forever hate him. Completely sucks for the Chargers, and then catches a TD and then a 50 yard reception on 3rd and 10 with 2 minutes left against us in the '06 divisional playoffs. Seriously, screw that guy.

No Andre means Foster and Fitzpatrick are screwed.

Bears sign safety Adrian Wilson

CHICAGO -- The Bears signed five-time Pro Bowl safety Adrian Wilson to a one-year deal, the team announced on Monday.

Wilson spent 12 seasons with the Arizona Cardinals where he started 162 games and recorded 885 tackles, 27 interceptions, 25½ sacks, 99 pass breakups and 15 forced fumbles.

Wilson is one of 13 players to register 20 or more interceptions and 20 or more sacks in their career since sacks became an official statistic in 1982.

Arizona released Wilson on March 8, 2013, but the safety eventually signed a three-year contract with the New England Patriots. However, Wilson suffered a season-ending Achilles injury last summer and failed to play in a regular season game in 2013. The Patriots released Wilson in April.

The Bears' safety position is far from settled. The club signed Ryan Mundy to a two-year deal in free agency and drafted Brock Vereen in the fourth-round out of Minnesota after allowing former starter Major Wright to depart via free agency.

Mundy and Vereen took all the first-team reps in the Bears' recently completed veteran mandatory minicamp. Chris Conte, Craig Steltz, M.D. Jennings and Danny McCray are also in the hunt to earn roster spots at safety, but Conte and Steltz were sidelined for much of the offseason program due to injuries.

Steltz is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, but it's unclear when Conte will be medically cleared to return from offseason shoulder surgery.

The Bears also signed tight end Jeron Mastrud to a one-year contract on Monday. Mastrud started 12 games for the Oakland Raiders last year where he caught six passes for 88 yards.

The 6-foot-6, 255-pound tight end played for the Miami Dolphins from 2010-12.

Jerry Rice, Jr. signs with Washington

Nearly 30 years after the 49ers made receiver Jerry Rice a first-round pick, a wideout who bears his name and DNA will get his NFL career started on the other side of the country.

Via Rich Tandler of CSN Washington, Jerry Rice Jr. has announced on his Instagram account that he has signed a contract with Washington, sharing a photo of the document. The team has not yet announced the move.

The younger Rice participated in 49ers rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, by his father’s team didn’t sign him. Previously, the Ravens also invited Rice Jr. to participate in rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. Coach John Harbaugh was impressed, but not sufficiently impressed to sign him.

I'm a bit annoyed by the lack of fanfare in the national media re. this signing. Even if he had a bit of a down year last year, he's one of the better corners in the game and is a very recognizable name. Yet, barely worthy of a mention on ESPN. If the Donkeys or Niners got him, you could bet your bottom dollar the analysts would be salivating and picking apart the signing to death.

Camp fodder. Couldn't make it at UCLA even with ample opportunity.

I do think there's truth to that but unless you are a major NFL name you aren't going to be mentioned on ESPN during LeBron Watch/World Cup right now

Report: Kevin Kolb arrested for drunk boating

Former (for now, possibly forever) NFL quarterback Kevin Kolb is back in the news, but not for good reasons.

According to 956Sports.com,Kolb was arrested Saturday in Willacy County, Texas on charges of boating while intoxicated. Booked at 2:44 a.m. on Sunday morning, he was released nearly 11 hours later.

(It would be eery if Kolb had a brother named Yaqub.)

A second-round pick in 2007, Kolb succeeded Donovan McNabb as the 2010 starter in Philly before a Week One concussion opened the door for Mike Vick to claim the job. The following year, Kolb was traded to Arizona, promptly signing a big-money deal. Two years, roughly $20 million and more injuries later, the Cardinals bailed on Kolb.

He signed with the Bills, suffered his latest concussion in the preseason, and eventually was released.

An eventful offseason for the Ravens

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/07/13/ravens-jimmy-smith-arrested-for-disorderly-conduct/

Quote:
Ravens’ Jimmy Smith arrested for disorderly conduct

Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith has been arrested and charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct, the fifth arrest for a Ravens player this offseason.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Smith was cited for failure to obey a lawful order of a police officer after authorities arrived at a bar, responding to a call about an unconscious woman in a bathroom. When police arrived, Smith was with the woman and said he was trying to assist her, but he would not move way after police repeatedly asked him to step aside so paramedics could attend to her.

“We’re gathering information about this,” Ravens spokesman Kevin Byrne told the paper.

Smith was released from custody at 11:15 p.m. on Saturday. The woman was taken to a hospital, and police say she was intoxicated.

The Ravens’ other arrests this offseason: Lorenzo Taliaferro for destruction of property and public intoxication, Jah Reid for two counts of battery, Deonte Thompson for suspicion of possession of marijuana and Ray Rice for assault.

Although Smith has stayed out of trouble previously in his NFL career, he had several off-field incidents in both high school and college that led him to drop to the end of the first round of the 2011 NFL draft. Smith has looked like a good draft pick in the three seasons since then, but this arrest only adds to a disappointing offseason in Baltimore.

I don't like this move I can't stand Sideline Barbie but I'm not surprised either.

http://www.si.com/nfl/2014/07/14/pam-oliver-erin-andrews-fox

Quote:
Erin Andrews replaces Pam Oliver on Fox's No. 1 NFL team

Pam Oliver will move to the Fox No. 2 team for her 20th NFL broadcasting season, her last as a sideline reporter. She'll move into a new role at Fox next season.

Pam Oliver is no longer Fox's top NFL sideline reporter. And after this coming football season, she will no longer be a sideline reporter at all.

Oliver confirmed the news to Sports Illustrated on Sunday night that she will move to the network’s No. 2 team for her 20th NFL broadcasting season. Erin Andrews has been elevated to the No. 1 sideline spot, joining the team of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. Oliver’s last season working as a reporter on the NFL will be spent with the No. 2 Fox team of Kevin Burkhardt and John Lynch.

After a painful couple of months, Oliver said the disappointment of that news has subsided and that she has accepted her new professional reality. But it was a shock last April when Fox Sports executives traveled to Atlanta, where she is based, to tell her in person that she would no longer hold the job that has been her professional life for two decades. Oliver says that while she respected Fox Sports president Eric Shanks and executive vice president of production John Entz delivering the news in person, she was stunned when they initially informed her that not only was she being removed from Fox’s No. 1 NFL team, but also that she was being taken off the NFL sidelines completely in 2014.

“To go from the lead crew to no crew was a little shocking,” Oliver said. “I said I wanted to do a 20th year [on the sidelines]. I expressed to them that I was not done and had something to offer. Again, I think it was predetermined coming in. Not at that meeting, but two years ago it was determined that no matter what I did or did not do, a change would be made for this year.”

After meeting with her bosses, Oliver spoke with her agent, Rick Ramage. They held meetings with other outlets –- for both sports and news roles –- before she ultimately worked things out with Fox. Shanks and Entz eventually agreed to give Oliver one final year on the NFL sidelines.

Removing the well-regarded and well-connected Oliver from the No. 1 team, not to mention initially wanting her out of sideline reporting altogether, seems counter to what a sports network should want in an NFL reporter. Why the decision to make the switch? SI.com contacted Shanks on Sunday night in Minneapolis, where he was preparing for Fox’s coverage of the MLB All-Star game on Tuesday at Target Field.

“I think in the last five years we have made a lot of changes with the NFL crews,” Shanks said. “We have made changes to keep our coverage across the board fresh, including the addition of Burkhardt and Lynch -– which has been one of the more exciting pairings we have put together. This is kind of the next move in that evolution.”

A veteran NFL reporter -– who has worked in television and asked for anonymity -– offered another reason. “She’s not blonde, nor is she in the demographic,” said the reporter. “I’m not naïve and I understand it’s a business, but I think that Fox did not treat her as befits a woman who has been the female face of their sports operation for the past 19 years.”

To be clear: Fox Sports executives insist they traveled to Atlanta not to jettison Oliver but to switch her role within Fox Sports. When Shanks and Entz flew to Atlanta to see Oliver, the three discussed Oliver's future at Fox over a meal at a restaurant. They insist they wanted her to stay with the company heading forward.

“That was a private conversation and where it ended up we think was a great place that it ended up,” Shanks said. “We sat with Pam and talked through what we needed each other to do to maximize the impact Pam could have. Where it ended up is more important than where it started.”

“The emphasis at the meeting was always placed on how they saw what was next for me versus what I saw would be next for me,” Oliver said. “I felt I was not done. I still felt I had more to offer with sideline reporting. I think that took them by surprise a little bit. So we focused on what the next step was and that’s how we ended up where we now. And I am excited about that.”

Oliver signed a new multi-year contract for Fox Sports last week and will be doing long-form pieces, specials, major interviews and some producing as well. She will continue her work on Showtime’s 60 Minutes Sports.

“Clearly it’s an expanded role that meets the needs of all the big events that Fox and Fox Sports 1 covers as well as the NFL on Fox,” Shanks said. “I can’t think of a more respected person in the entire industry than Pam Oliver, and when you find out that Pam is going to be doing the interview, I don’t think you would say that anyone else would do the interview better. Her being a part of the Fox family now and in the future is really important to us. The move is hugely positive to where Fox Sports is going and building its journalistic chops and credibility 365 days and not just 17 days a year.”

(One might argue that if Fox Sports brass is so high on Oliver’s journalistic and reporting chops, why would it remove her from an interviewing role on its most important NFL games?)

Oliver turned 53 in March, and women in their 50s on sports television have long been an endangered species. Oliver said no one at Fox has ever indicated that they have a problem with her age. “But I live in the real world and I know that television tends to get younger and where women are concerned,” Oliver said. “Just turn on your TV. It’s everywhere. And I’m not saying these younger girls don’t deserve a chance. I know I’ve had my turn.”

“Disappointment is not really a word I’d use right now because I’ve had some weeks to process it,” Oliver continued. “I think my emotions during the season will be sadness because I had been around that group for a decade. I will miss all the little things, just from Joe’s impersonations of people and Troy’s bad impersonations of people and all of the running jokes -- that was the hardest part of hearing the news. But you have to move forward and deal with what is on your plate. I went through a range of emotions, but as I speak with you today, disappointment has passed me and I have reached a point of trying to move forward with some sadness."

Fox Sports management is obviously concerned about the reaction to Oliver being removed from the top team and any narrative that pits Oliver versus Andrews. By every metric, at least on my viewer scale, from experience on the NFL beat to contacts around the league to the journalistic nature of her questions, Oliver provides more for viewers on an NFL broadcast than Andrews does. That’s not a knock on Andrews. That’s simply a statement on Oliver’s work.

Asked why Andrews was the right person to be Fox’s No. 1 NFL reporter, Shanks said he wanted to focus on Oliver for this story.

Clearly, Fox has a lot invested in Andrews, 36, and the network has long been smitten by talent who cross over to popular culture platforms, as Andrews has with Dancing With The Stars. The same is true for Terry Bradshaw and Michael Strahan. Bumping her up to the No. 1 NFL team fulltime will put her in more homes and, executives no doubt believe, give her games a bigger feel. Will it improve the broadcast? Time will tell.

“I think Erin is solid,” Oliver said. “They have made a determination and it just happened to be with a position I had held for almost 20 years. It’s not necessary to feel something [bad] toward the person who is assuming your formal role. You just understand that they have changed. The crews could change too. In a few years I think Fox will look radically different. I don’t know how, but you have your thoughts and opinions. For people to pit us against each other is not necessary and not going to get far if the two of us don’t participate.”

Last year was among the roughest professionally for Oliver. While at MetLife Stadium in August to cover a Giants-Colts preseason game, Oliver was hit on the side of the face by a football during pregame warmups on a wayward pass thrown by Colts backup quarterback Chandler Harnish. Though she worked the game, she suffered a concussion and spent five days in a dark room inside her Atlanta home. She grinded the year out and did her usual solid work. Now she begins preparing for her final season on the sidelines.

“The No. 2 team is not chopped liver,” Oliver said. “It is an up-and-coming crew and a really good group of guys. They called me the other day and we had some laughs. So I will savor this year. I will get my goodbyes to the security guys and the fans I’ve known for years. It is not even remotely bad, not even anything remotely like ‘Poor me.’ I feel like I have landed in a pot of gold at this stage and how it could have gone. My role has changed. Sideline reporting is being phased out and I’m fortunate enough to get this year. I am lucky. I do know that.

“So I want people to know that this ain’t that tragic in the grand scheme of things. It is a change. Despite me having a two-year heads up, it was still kind of shocking. I went through all of the emotions you can imagine. It’s just that I love the job. Nothing else. The NFL is the best thing going and I love that sideline. People will sometimes say to me, Are you not tired of it? I’m like, think about it: What did you do last Sunday? ‘Oh, you watched football.’ Yeah, you want to know what I did last Sunday? I had the best seat in the house.”

Quote:
Chris Snee on retirement: My body has had enough

Longtime Giants guard Chris Snee announced his retirement today, saying that as he dealt with hip and elbow injuries at age 32, he realized he simply doesn’t have it in him anymore.

“I felt worse by continuing to work out,” Snee told Josina Anderson of ESPN. “I am nowhere near the level of strength that I usually have. That’s been my game for 10 years, being one of the strongest players out there and using that to my advantage. If I don’t have that, I wouldn’t be able to do my job the way I expect, but also with what they expect of me. That’s kind of what [Giants G.M. Jerry Reese] and I agreed upon in March when we decided to try this thing and see if I can come back. I told him that he had my word, that I would be honest with him, and I was. I’ve told him that my body has had enough. With the way last season ended that’s the last thing I wanted to experience again.”

Snee has spent his entire NFL career playing for his father-in-law, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin. At the time the Giants drafted Snee there was some talk that it was a case of nepotism, but in reality Snee has turned out to be one of the Giants’ most consistent players over the last decade.

Now the Giants will have to make do without Snee, who will walk away rather than go through the grind of another NFL season

You can't make this stuff up

Titans' Zach Mettenberger sucker-punched at Losers, owner says

Titans rookie quarterback Zach Mettenberger was the victim of a sucker punch during an incident over the weekend at a popular Nashville nightspot, according to its owner.

Steve Ford, owner of Losers Most Wanted Bar & Grill on Division Street, said Mettenberger did nothing to provoke another bar patron, but the 6-foot-5, 224-pound quarterback ended up getting punched in the face. He did not require medical attention.

"Here's the truth: The guy said something about 'Roll Tide!' to Zach, and Zach turned around and said 'Good luck with that,' " Ford said on Monday. "And the guy's buddy then sucker-punched Zach.

"I promise you that Mettenberger did not throw a punch. He didn't do anything. The guy sucker-punched him in the eye, that's the bottom line, and the guy that punched him started running out the door. My door guys had to chase him down."

The Titans declined comment on Monday.

I'm the last person to judge unusual names but I don't like the name. Then again Steele would've probably been worse.

Christian Ponder named his daughter after Bobby Bowden.

Christian Ponder -- Vikings quarterback and husband of sideline reporter Sam Ponder -- is a new father. (Congrats! Parenthood is awesome, terrifying and exhausting.)

One could argue much of the success he has today is owed to his time at Florida State and coach Bobby Bowden. Christian obviously thinks so, naming his daughter after the legendary Seminoles coach.

I named my kid after myself, so I won't be judging anyone on their name. Additionally, "Bowden" is a pretty cool name.

Although passing up on any opportunity to use Sam's maiden name of STEELE is clearly a mistake.

NFL announces Lane Johnson suspended four games for PEDs

Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson has been suspended for the first four games of the 2014 season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Johnson blamed the suspension, which had previously been reported but only today officially announced, on a medication that he says he took without realizing it was on the list of banned substances. He did not name the medication.

“In April while training, I mistakenly and foolishly put a prescribed medication in my body to help with a medical issue. I mistakenly failed to clear it with Eagles trainers and check the NFL list of banned substances. I am extremely sorry for this mistake and I will learn from it and be smarter in the future,” Johnson said. “This will be very hard on me to not be battling with my teammates for four games – but I will be ready and better than ever when I return.”

With Johnson and Miami’s Dion Jordan both suspended from Week One through Week Four, two of the NFL’s Top 4 picks in the 2013 NFL draft will be serving PED suspensions to start the season.

Johnson can participate in training camp and the preseason but will have to be away from the team’s facility from the start of the regular season through Monday, September 29.

Reports: Former Cowboys RB Robert Newhouse passes away at 64

Robert Newhouse, a running back and fullback for the Cowboys from 1972 through 1983, died Tuesday after a bout with heart disease, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday.

A second-round pick out of Houston, Newhouse rushed for 4,784 yards and 29 touchdowns in his 12 seasons with Dallas. He started in three Super Bowls for the Cowboys, and he capped the club’s 27-10 victory vs. Denver in Super Bowl XII with a 29-yard fourth-quarter TD pass to Golden Richards.

“House was a great football player,” Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach said of Newhouse, according to Fox 4 in Dallas-Fort Worth. “Off the field, he was a great man, kind and caring, solid as a rock.”

According to published reports, Newhouse is survived by his wife and four children

Would've rather had him than Dion Jordan anyways. Good job Ireland. Instead of ludicrously moving up, you could've gotten Kyle Long, Keenan Allen, or if you still had a hard-on for DE/DT's like your mentor Parcells, Sheldon Richardson.

Pat Angerer signs with Falcons

When the Falcons lost linebacker Sean Weatherspoon for the season, there were several veteran free agents mentioned as possible signings to shore up the team’s inside linebacker group.

Former Colt Pat Angerer was on that list and he worked out for the team on Tuesday. The workout apparently went well because Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports that Angerer is the newest member of Atlanta’s roster.

Angerer ended the 2013 season on injured reserve after hurting his knee and required microfracture surgery to repair the injury. That kept him from shopping himself as a free agent this spring, but things have obviously progressed well enough to satisfy the Falcons.

Angerer, a second-round pick in 2010, played 54 games and made 39 starts during his time with the Colts. The Falcons have Paul Worrilow, Joplo Bartu and rookie Prince Shembo among the in-house options who will compete with Angerer to fill the starting linebacker jobs come the regular season.
