Fist Full of Games Left… It’s a slow death, this season.

The Lakers had some health to open the season and took one from the Clippers. That was a long time ago. Since then, they’ve have had some of their more embarrassing games against the Clippers. Today, they added Bazemore to the list of Kobe, Pau, Nash, Kaman, Henry and Farmar all out with injury. Feels like I’m forgetting someone on that list.

Bazemore went down in the second quarter with a foot injury (the x-rays were negative, however).

Nick Young and Jordan Hill kept the Lakers in striking distance early on. Young actually gave the Lakers a first-half lead at one point. The Lakers were able to force some turnovers and get out in transition to keep things a little close, but in the end, they had just too little first-string talent on the floor. They fell 120-97.

When they can’t hit threes, they have no chance in most games. They went 7-31 from behind the arc.

Just a fist full of a games left…

Meeks -- -- He and Nick seemed to hand off the baton in this game. Nick had most of his points in the first half while Meeks was stone cold. Then Meeks picked it up when Nick went stone cold. Bad first half with some poor quality shot selection—off balance wing jumpers, no easy buckets or threes for him early on. Not sure what was going on with him. He was scoreless in the first half and not playing to his strengths. The Lakers did a poor job of setting him for shots, so he may have wanted to chuck up a couple because of that (Clippers ran some nice plays for Redick off screens, Lakers none for Meeks in that half). In the second half, we started getting out on the break more off Clippers turnovers. This got Meeks going for some easy ones. Then they started setting him up a couple of times out of the timeouts for scores. All Meeks offensive work came in the second half, but the Lakers were down big and out of it. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-15 shooting (2-6 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a -27. The Action: He missed a three off a swing pass. He missed an off-balance floater from the wing. He missed another poor, off-balance running wing jumper from the other side. His interior pass was picked off. He forced up another bad attempt from three with a man on him. Second Half: He missed a layup in transition. He got out again on the next stop and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He curled into the lane, took the pass and hammered down the dunk. He drew FTs on the drive, he made both. He scored a layup on the break around Griffin’s flop. He missed a wing three. He missed another drive. He drained a three out of a timeout. He dunked getting a backscreen and taking the feed from Sacre on the cut. Wide open on a wing three and he swished. Horrible cross-court pass and it was stolen for the dunk. He missed a quick turn and chuck from three.

Hill -- -- He was one of the few things keeping the Lakers in striking distance early on. He and Young had 33 of the Lakers 49 first half points. Hill was making some chippies, getting out in transition a little and getting points off the glass. He hung in there with the Clipper bigs (although he did get dunked on badly by Jordan after giving up an offensive rebound). Solid contributions from Hill. Our team D rotations got exposed badly behind our bigmen in this game. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 10-14 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 9 boards (3 assists), 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -22. The Action: He hit a jumphook off the feed from Bazemore. He swished an elbow jumper off the two-man game. He missed a baseline jumper out of a timeout. He ball-faked and attacked down the middle of the lane for a dunk. He cleaned up a Sacre miss. He didn’t hit rim on a jumphook. Jordan made Hill think twice, twice during the same play and Hill bricked badly on the jumphook. He hit the jumphook over Jordan next time down, much more controlled. He sank a face-up elbow jumper on his next touch. He airballed a long wing jumper. He dunked filling the lane in transition. He drew FTs working the offensive glass. He scored 16 points on 7-11 shooting to go with 5 boards. Second Half: He cleaned up a Meeks miss in transition. He went for the dunk, but pulled it down and scored a reverse instead (odd looking, but same result). He swished an open baseline jumper.

Bazemore -- -- He went down in the second quarter as he stopped hard on the dribble and had to get rid of the ball. He injured his foot and went to the locker room for x-rays. Those came up negative and he’ll have an MRI on Monday. Hopefully, it’s something minor, but you hate it when someone goes down and there’s not obvious contact involved. Sometimes those are the most serious. He did walk off the court without help. The Stats: He had 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists and 1 foul in 11 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a wing three. Quick attack in transition for the layup. He stumbled on a drive and missed a pull-up jumper, should have reset the offense.

Kelly -- -- Poor transition D against Griffin on multiple occasions. He just wasn’t staying with him and it led to easy scores or scoring position for Blake. D’Antoni called a timeout on one of those and also later subbed out Kelly off another. He needed to step on the gas, but instead you saw him moving in half speed in transition. That’s not good enough. Always a learning experience for Kelly. You can watch a lot of tape, but sometimes you have to learn by failing. Offensively, he had nothing going on. He needs to become that knockdown three shooter. He was getting great looks from behind the arc and shot blanks. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-11 shooting (0-4 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals and 5 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -21. The Action: Poor position and he gave up an easy one to Griffin in early offense. He missed a wing three. He attacked, spun and banked in the leaner. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He fouled Griffin in transition and D’Antoni went off the officials on that one. He didn’t come to the ball on a wing pass from Hill to initiate the offense and the Clippers jumped the lane for a fastbreak steal. He missed a wing jumper. He attacked off the three line and reversed against the shotclock. He missed a three in transition. He was blocked on a midrange jumper. He missed a three out of at timeout. He got tapped on a nice up and under. He posted up and missed the short one with his left. He dunked getting out on the break with speed.

Marshall -- -- Really don’t understand some of the decision making early on. It was like he wasn’t paying attention to where the strengths on the floor were. Hill doesn’t need the ball in transition 22 feet from the hoop. Nick Young doesn’t need to be relegated to a weakside spot-up shooter, not getting touches for several possessions for minutes after entering the game. Seemed like Marshall got warmed up and started reading the floor and orchestrating the offense a little better as the game went along. He also started attacking the rim better (but struggle from three). Defensively, the Clippers set up their offensive schemes so that Marshall would be forced to help against a big. That usually led to dunks. Poor FT shooting from Marshall, throughout the game. He played all of the second half. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-10 shooting (0-4 from three, 2-5 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 11 assists, 5 turnovers and 2 fouls in 43 minutes. He was a -21. The Action: He was blocked on a slow developing floater. He set up Hill for the elbow jumper off the two-man game. He threw a pass away trying to force it into the paint. Horrible decision to just pass the ball to Hill on the wing after bringing the ball up, Hill then threw it away (what’s Hill going to do with the ball 22 feet from the hoop in transition?) He missed a wing three on a kickout. He got a hand on his hip, probed and banked in the leaner. He hit Hill filling the lane for the dunk. He drew FTs on a wing three, he made just one of the FTs. He probed and hit the pull-up wing jumper with 10 seconds left. Second Half: He missed a long wing three out of a timeout (we’ve got to set up something better than that). He set up Sacre for the short jumphook off the two-man game. He missed a wide open wing three, they are just leaving him right now. He attacked the lane without a screen and scored the layup. Aggressive, quick attack against off the three line for a layup (caught the D by surprise with the quick decision). He attacked and missed a drive. Change of pace dribble against a big and he drew FTs, he made one. He missed a wing three.

Young -- -- Nick helped keep the Lakers in the game early on. The Lakers took the lead behind one of his scoring runs in the first half. He had 17 of his 18 points in the first half, getting a flurry of them quickly once Marshall sat. He went down late in the third quarter getting tripped with no call and was in pain, but he returned later. He was cold from three behind the arc. Just missing some wide open looks over and over. That kept the Lakers buried when he couldn’t keep up the pace after Meeks had joined the fight. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 5-15 shooting (2-11 from three, 6-7 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He swished a sideline three on his first attempt. He drew three FTs on the wing three on his next attempt, he made all three. He went behind his back down the middle of the lane and banked in the runner. He missed a three, trying too hard to get the kickout with his feet to draw a foul. He drained the step-back elbow fade out of a timeout. He got a kind bounce on a wing three. He attacked with speed, spun to lose Baby and got taken down from behind for FTs, he made both. He missed a sideline three. He attacked the rim and didn’t get a whistle on the missed layup. He missed a long turnaround chuck from three with the shotclock low. He swished an elbow fade. He missed an open sideline three. He missed a wild chuck from three, dribbling into a sideline double team with the clock winding down. He had 17 points on 5-11 shooting (2-7 from three). Second Half: He missed a long three on a kickout. He was stripped on a double team then called for the clear-path foul, uggh. He missed a wide open three he got to measure. He iso’d, worked a series of dribbles and fakes, attacked the paint and drew FTs, he made one. He was stripped with no call splitting a double team and went down (how is that not a foul?). He missed an open three. He missed another sideline three, then sat.

Johnson -- -- We put him on the PGs defensively as well as Griffin. Those were some of our better minutes in the first half and that was one of the things that kept the Lakers in the mix. He had a couple of steals with pressure D just using his hands well out on the perimeter against them. Lakers and “defensive pressure” usually don’t go hand in hand in this season. He led the team with 3 steals. He was just a -3 in his 29 minutes. A semi-quiet game, but effective. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-8 shooting (2-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He stripped Pau on the perimeter with a reach. Poor off-balance chuck from three in the corner. He drew FTs when Bazemore went down, he made both. He attacked, spun and bricked the short jumper. He swished a wing three. He swiped the ball from Griffin. Second Half: Nice attack off the wing with speed, he drew the D and hit Sacre for the dunk. Sloppy pass off the two-man game, turnover. He missed a wing three. He moved in off the three line and missed the open baseline jumper. Quick turn in the air after taking a pass on a cut and he hit the short one. He attacked, spun and missed a bank. He drained a corner three.

Sacre -- -- Offensively, we set Sacre up off the two-man game or some drive and dishes for easy scores. If we had an impact-baller that could break the D down with more consistency and dish, Sacre’s offensive game probably follows suit. He doesn’t play above the rim like the Clipper bigs, who make you want to throw up passes high over the D. The Clips were very good at drawing the D and then taking advantage of their length on the weakside for dunks. Almost a double-double for Sacre. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-8 shooting (3-4 from three) to go with 10 boards, 4 assists and 1 foul in 29 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He drew FTs getting mugged after a pumpfake under the hoop, he made both. He was blocked from behind after a couple pumpfakes. He missed a short one off the two-man game, but Hill cleaned it up. Second Half: He made the short jumphook off the two-man game with Marshall. He dunked off the drive and dish from Wes next time down. He missed a long wing jumper at the end of the quarter. He got an offensive board and drew FTs, but he should have been able to power up and dunk over Hedo rather than pumpfake like nuts and miss (he made one FT). He short-armed an open elbow jumper. He slammed back down a missed layup (that’s more like it).

Brooks -- -- With Bazemore going down, they could have brought in MarShon for him early on. Then Young went down in the third quarter in pain and was subbed out. Still no MarShon. Finally with 2 minutes left, he got some meaningless garbage time. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-2 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 1 board and no fouls in 2 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He sank a three on his first touch. He missed a drive.

D’Antoni -- -- He called a quick timeout down 11-6 after the Lakers opened with some soft D, particularly in transition… The Lakers trailed by 3 when the subs came: Sacre, Wes and Young for Kelly, Bazemore and Meeks… Marshall running the offense poorly. D’Antoni sat him and then Nick tied the game back up on a series of scores… The Lakers trailed 25-22 after the first… He started a Sacre, Johnson, Young, Meeks, Bazemore lineup. Young got the Lakers the lead with a couple of makes… He brought in Marshall when Bazemore went down… The Lakers had a 1-point lead when he went to the Hill, Kelly, Young, Meeks, Marshall unit…. He sat Kelly shortly later as he wasn’t playing good transition D… Lakers turning the ball over and fading fast at the end of the quarter. He called a timeout down 13 with 3 minutes left… Wes back in for Meeks… He brought back in Meeks for Sacre… The Lakers trailed 57-49 at the half. The Lakers shot 41.5% (17-41, 3-15 3PT, 12-14 FT). The Clippers shot 60.5% (23-38, 5-9 3PT, 6-13 FT). They had 13 turnovers… He started Young for Bazemore in the second half… Sloppy start to the half for the Lakers and D’Antoni quickly called a timeout… The Lakers got some fastbreak points, but CP3 began to take over. Lakers down by 17 midway through the quarter when the timeout came… The Lakers trailed 94-72 after three… Garbage time all fourth quarter… Brooks finally in with 2 minutes left…

Cannot wait for this season to be over.

And Brooks must be doing something wrong to get virtually no time on the court with as few players as we have left. I'm guessing attitude but who knows with the screwy lineups MDA favors.

Thanks for the summary. One positive I'll take out of this is that Hill shows that he is talented around the basket. If we just get the right coach that can encourage him and maximize his talents, I believe he can really contribute to our front line (scoring and rebounding wise) on a consistent basis. Hill is developing a nice array of moves. Hope we keep him.

Pretty freaking tough season to get through. Can't wait for it to be over with. The real season for me is this off-season because I think its critical to see what Laker management is going to do.

yeah man i can't wait for it to be over too; it just hasn't been the same this season with the Lakers losing the way they have. Last season, even though we got swept in the first round, many of the games were exciting and game down to the final minutes or even seconds.

Five more games of this misery.

Do you realize that Lakers somehow managed to not reach a double-digit losing streak this whole season? Seems straight impossible.
