Finishing Strong… In the lottery.

This game had the look of several players on one-year contracts looking to get their numbers. There were a lot of chucks from the perimeter from everyone and little offensive flow. The “team” is done for the season. They aren’t player hating, nor wrecking anyone’s playoff position. They’re finished and ready for the offseason.

They fell 112-95, continuing their 6-game winless streak in April.

The question is now whether the Lakers have another win in them?

They are closing in on the Celtics and the Jazz, just a game behind each in the lottery positioning. Assuming we look past the Grizzlies, the Lakers have a Tankerville Showdown at Utah on Monday, the second night of a back-to-back.

There’s little drama remaining for the Lakers. Will Pau Gasol suit up against Memphis for possibly his last game in Staples? Will the winless April continue and the Lakers catch the Jazz and Celtics?

Meeks -- -- Nothing really clean for him from the start. A lot of off-balance jumpers, sometimes expecting a whistle that didn’t come (he’s usually been pretty good about drawing FTs on those plays). He picked up the pace in the second half, trying to get out on the break or attack the rim. He had several shots blocked around the rim or just simply missed the chippies. Some of these were in key moments of potential Laker runs which hurt even more. Just never got in his comfort zone tonight. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 2-12 shooting (1-2 from three, 5-8 from the line) to go with 1 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He drained a wing three for the Lakers first bucket. He attacked baseline and kicked to Kelly for three. He missed a quick-fire three. He missed a chuck from the wing expecting a whistle that didn’t come. He missed an off-balance wing jumper. Second Half: He dribbled the ball off his foot to start the half, dunk the other way. Another off-balance long chuck from the perimeter expecting a whistle that didn’t come. He attacked baseline, tried to reverse and was blocked (probably should have tried to cram it down). He drew FTs on the break, getting contact while blocked, he made both. More FTs on the break, he made both. He jumped a pass lane with speed, took it the distance and missed, sure seemed like a foul (Marshall cleaned it up). He missed a reverse on the baseline cut (he should have had that one). He missed a prayer of a floater in a crowd. He was blocked on a drive. He leaked out, took the outlet and scored the layup next time down. He attacked, took contact on the drive and drew FTs, he missed both. He missed a short floater in the lane. He drew FTs on the perimeter, getting hit as he was about to pull up, he made one.

Hill -- -- Our starting bigs both finished with double-doubles tonight. A lot of perimeter chucking from Hill in this game. Not exactly what you want to see. You’d rather have him around the hoop doing damage. It took him 18 attempts to get 18 points. While he hit a few long jumpers that’s not where we want him. We need him in the paint cleaning up others missed jumpers. When he’s clanking from long range, we don’t have a chance at getting his misses. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-18 shooting (4-4- from the line) to go with 12 boards (4 offensive), 4 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 42 minutes. He was a -20. The Action: He missed an open corner jumper. He hit an elbow pull-up. He fumbled a bounce pass away. He drew FTs on the setup by Marshall and made both. He missed a floater in the lane. He posted up, spun and hit the jumphook. He drained a 22-footer (wow, some long range gunning). He missed a long baseline jumper. He hit a jumphook on low position. He grabbed a board, but couldn’t finish the jumphook. He faced up and hit the 16-footer from the right side. He missed another 20-footer. He worked the two-man game with Wes to set him up for a couple of jumpers. He chucked and missed another long jumper. He couldn’t hold a pass cleanly and traveled. He had 12 points on 5-12 shooting and 6 boards. Second Half: He airballed a hook under the hoop. Nice, hard foul on the dunk challenge. He swiped a pass from Curry under the hoop, just ripping it away from him. He drew FTs in the paint, he made both. He missed an open 20-footer straight away. He cleaned up the Farmar dribble penetration with a tip in (that’s more like it). He missed a 15-foot one-hander. He was blindsided from behind on the perimeter by Blake. He put back in a brick bank miss by Farmar. He ran over a man and missed the drive, but Kelly cleaned it up.

Kelly -- -- He kept the Lakers in it early on with 8 points in the first quarter, but struggled to score the rest of the way. Still, good job on the boards, one of his better games. He was gobbling up boards and wasn’t getting outworked. Looked very competent in that regard tonight and finished with the double-double. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-11 shooting (2-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 37 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He was blocked on a turnaround. He was stripped on the sideline for a score the other way. He sank an open sideline three off the kickout. He missed a turnaround jumper from the wing. He sank another three straight away on a quick-fire attempt on the next trip down. He up-faked at the three line, attacked with speed and flipped a layup over the help D. He was blocked on a floater but tapped it out to Hill. He missed a deep three trying to beat the shotclock. He had 8 points on 3-7 shooting, 6 boards, 2 assists and 3 turnovers. Second Half: Nice D in transition to stop the ball, then challenge another’s shot, then recover and push out the board. He banked in a pull-up jumper at the FT line asking for a whistle. Quick footwork on D to knock a pass away, then run it down and save it from the corner to a teammate. He drew FTs on a pull-up from 17 feet out, he made both. He missed a jumphook. He hit Nick for the wing three. He grabbed a Hill miss and flipped it in over his head. He almost banked in a corner three, yikes.

Marshall -- -- Only 3 assists for Kendall in this game. Just a lot of iso ball by the team, which is why it had that feel of a bunch of guys on one-year contracts trying to get some stats. Meanwhile, Curry dropped a 30-12-10 triple double. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-7 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He missed a layup down the middle of the lane. He drew a charge on Thompson’s drive. He attacked and whipped a pass back to Hill for FTs. He sank a wing three on a mismatch. He missed a wing three. He missed another three. Second Half: His bounce pass was picked off. He missed a jumper standing on the three line. He hit a running bank working off the Hill screen. He cleaned up a Meeks breakaway miss.

Johnson -- -- I thought he played limited minutes tonight, but then looked down at the stat box and he ran 30. Wow. He had the Mr. Invisible thing going for a good chunk of his minutes. D’Antoni ran him at both SF and PF tonight. We put him defensively on Curry for stretch trying to get some stops. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-8 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. The Action: He missed a wing three. He sank an elbow jumper off the two-man game with Hill. He sank a baseline jumper off the two-man game again with Hill. Second Half: He sank an FT jumper after getting a fly by on the step-back. He missed a wing three. Quick chuck from three out of a timeout, surely that’s not how we set that play up. He took the pass from Young on the break and dunked.

Young -- -- Some awful chucking from the perimeter in the first half. He forced up a number of poor shots. Usually, he has a couple bad ones per game, but he had that and more in the first half. It felt very much like if you were giving him the ball, it wasn’t coming back to anyone. Late in the game, Nick went on a little scoring frenzy that forced the Warriors to call a timeout. He ended up with 50% shooting, but it wasn’t pretty for a long stretch. We ran him at the SG some tonight, going with bigger lineups. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 10-20 shooting (3-8 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with no boards, 4 assists and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He missed a wing jumper. He sank a sideline three off the swing pass from Farmar. He missed a fading chuck from the wing, poor shot selection. He swished a wing jumper. He missed a three trying to draw a foul very unsuccessfully. He missed a baseline jumper. He fell asleep on an inbounds play and gave up a layup (really bad D by Marshall on the passer, too). He forced another jumper on the other end and wasn’t close. He led the team with 3 assists at the half. Second Half: He attacked baseline and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a pull-up three in transition. He swished an off-balance midrange jumper. He iso’d on Blake and sank the pull-up jumper over him at the end of the quarter. He missed a three on iso. He drained a three off the two-man sequence with Kelly. He drained a wing three off the handoff. He missed an elbow turnaround. He swished a long jumper, getting hit with no call. He turned the defender around in transition and scored the layup. He crossed over and sank the pull-up 20 footer to force a timeout. He missed a fading step-back sideline three set up off the double screens. He tucked the ball under his arm, attacked and tossed the layup in over the tight D. He pulled up and hit Wes streaking for the dunk. He missed a long chuck from three.

Farmar -- -- A bit sloppy with the passing tonight, throwing some in the feet of teammates or the hands of defenders. Just not clean in the playmaking. He sank a couple of threes but missed just about everything else he took. He looked off balance a bit on his pull-up jumpers. We needed more dribble penetration in this game to draw the D and Farmar gave the Lakers a little but not enough. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-11 shooting (2-7 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 3 steals, 4 turnover and no fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He sank a sideline three off the split play. He threw a pass away at mid court. He hit Young for the three. He drained a catch-and-shoot wing jumper at the end of the quarter on the inbounds pass with just a second remaining. He missed a wing three. He fumbled a dribble away on the sideline. He got tapped on a wing three. He created with the shotclock low, pumpfaking to draw FTs with a second left, he made one. He missed a three on iso at the end of the quarter. Second Half: He threw a pass into the feet of a teammate, turnover. He missed a long two, his heels on the three line. He sank a sideline three on a kickout. He attacked past Blake and missed the layup, but Hill cleaned it up. He missed a three in transition (didn’t go straight up). He bricked a bank badly, but Hill cleaned it up. Way low on a lob pass, turnover. He swiped the ball and ignited the break. He missed a long three.

Sacre -- -- The Lakers had very few defensive moments in this game – an occasional steal by Meeks or someone – but Sacre was in on a couple of simple, but effective traps on the sidelines that forced turnovers. The Lakers are rarely pro-active on D. They’ve had athleticism to do it all year, but just never made it much of a philosophy. Sacre is pretty good at committing to those traps and causing problems, wish we could see more of it from the whole team. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-2 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 3 assists, 1 block, 2 turnover and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: Nice double team in the corner to force a turnover. Another good double team trap to force another turnover. He crashed the glass and tipped in a miss in a crowd. Second Half: He fumbled away a bounce pass. He missed a long jumper in early offense. He drew FTs on the defensive glass, he made both.

D’Antoni -- -- He sat Hill and Johnson for Young and Sacre midway through the quarter, score even… He sat Marshall for Meeks down 1… Down 1, he brought back in Hill for Kelly who had 8 points… The Lakers were tied 26-26 after the first quarter. Lakers hit 6 threes… He started a Hill, Sacre, Kelly, Young, Farmar lineup… The Lakers gradually faded throughout the quarter. A lot of perimeter chucking from L.A. and not good looks… Down 9, we went small with the Hill, Wes lineup… The Lakers trailed 58-43 at the half. The Lakers shot 38.6% (17-44, 6-15 3PT, 3-4 FT). The Warriors shot 51% (25-49, 5-12 3PT, 3-4 FT). The Warriors had a 17-0 advantage on the break…. The lead swelled to 20 before the Lakers cut that in half… He brought in Farmar for Marshall midway through the quarter… They quickly faded back by 20 and D’Antoni called a timeout… The Lakers trailed 83-69 heading into the fourth, still in striking distance… He started the Sacre, Hill, Young, Meeks, Farmar unit… They finally hit a three, first one since the first quarter… A little bit of a frenzy by Nick to trim the lead to 11 with 3 minutes left and force a timeout, but too little, too late… The Lakers shot 9-28 from three…

Closing in on Top-5 draft position, that's the most important part.

Basically how I feel at this point...

Missed the game but didn't really miss much.

Thanks DB. Only three more write-ups left for the season, even without the playoffs, it has felt like a long one.
