Great job by Popovich showing some compassion for Craig Sager and his son. Obviously someone told him what was up and he controlled himself for once.

Popovich: We miss Craig Sager

SAN ANTONIO -- Spurs coach Gregg Popovich says he looks forward to sideline reporter Craig Sager's return and "I promise I'll be nice."

TNT's Sager is missing the NBA playoffs as he undergoes treatment for leukemia. So his son, Craig Sager Jr., filled in for Sunday's broadcast of San Antonio's playoff opener against Dallas, asking Popovich a few questions after the third quarter.

Popovich is famous for his terse answers to in-game questions from Sager and other sideline reporters. Sager even joked about it in a statement Friday confirming his diagnosis: "Too bad, I had some probing questions for Pop."

This time, Popovich was verbose by his standards in discussing the Spurs' play. "Great questions from Craig JUNIOR," he quipped at the end.

The younger Sager, a sports reporter in Atlanta, said he asked his father for suggestions but was told, "You're on your own."

"You did a great job," Popovich said to him, "but I'd rather have your dad standing here."

Popovich then shared this message for his father: "We miss you. You've been an important part of all of us for a long time, doing a great job. We want your fanny back on the court, and I promise I'll be nice."

The ponytailed Sager Jr., 25, wore a sparkly orange tie from his father's closet. A former football walk-on at Georgia, he later tweeted that his dad didn't know about the trip to San Antonio until host Ernie Johnson mentioned it on air at tip-off.

The younger Sager was supposed to tape an interview with Popovich, but the coach insisted on doing it live during the game. Popovich also gave him a hand-written letter to deliver to his father.

Relax. Do you really think that Popovich is like that to everyone 24/7? If so, why do Spurs players love him so much?

I thought that it was obvious that he does those interviews for the amusement of fans and the whole NBA. Making fun of Craig Sager has alwyas been a thing. Players, coaches and tv personalites do it. It's not an accident that he wears those colorful suits. It's entertainment. Both of them obviously just kid around with those interviews.

Anyway, Good luck Craig.

Great news: Craig Sager will return to sidelines for TNT March 5

There is no need to adjust your television, that is really the color of his suit.

We pass along great news for NBA fans:

Craig Sager is the long-time sideline reporter for TNT, a real pro’s pro, and also a guy best remembered for his ridiculous/amazing/one-of-a-kind suits, and occasionally getting under the skin of Gregg Popovich.

Sager had to step away from his job last April when it was announced he had acute leukemia.

The news he has put this cancer in remission and can return to work is great news for us as fans, but better news for the Sager family. It will be great to see him on our television screens again.

Even if his suits might blind us sometimes.

It will be good to see Sager back. I didn't think he would be back this year. Wonder if it's just for a game here and there, or regular work?

They need to televise a game with the Timberwolves. The reunion of Sager and KG will be epic.

I saw a interview with him, forgot who the interviewer was, he's lost a lot of weight.

I'm looking for him to shame Howard's sport coat with his comeback ensemble.

Glad he's doing well. He looks like a completely different guy. I hope he doesn't get ill again. Relapses happen quite often.

Craig Sager has begun treatment, after being diagnosed with leukemia. His TNT colleagues saluted him during today’s playoff coverage, with some loud sartorial selections.

Craig Sager’s son Craig Sager Jr. will interview Gregg Popovich after the third quarter.

Hopefully someone clues Popovich in on what is going on so he can show some class for once and not act like a pompous dick.

Pop is hardly clueless...Pop and Sager are great friends, Pop has been communicating privately with Sager throughout his whole treatments. Their rivalry/banter is all shtick, Pop has been doing it for years and both have benefited greatly from it. There's no animosity at all. There's the best between quarters interview show in the NBA. Hell even Doris Burke loves Pop and he has brought her to tears once. He hates the pointless between quarters interview gig, not the people. Wishing Sager all the best .

Very sad. The worst part of cancer (other than actually passing away) is the fact that even when you seem to have beaten it - it comes right back at you.

Hope he recovers again.

So many great Laker playoff games watching Sager at the sidelines. Lost count.

I wish Sager the best, but his gimmick of wearing bad suits to get attention has always been tacky.

But I do wish him and his family the very best.
