Not sure what you mean by this. The salary cap is a mathematical calculation based on revenue, not some league decision.

Yes, but the other teams a) have sold out most games and b) pay a far smaller amount to watch the team than the Lakers and Knicks.

Why do Lakers, Knicks, Chicago, and Miami have to pay a stipend to the league to try and even out revenue per team, yet the other teams have both A & B? Why not raise ticket prices to what the market will bear there so that the revenue from gate receipts gets less out of balance?

Just saying, not that 5 million will cause any changes, the league is giving franchises a little more to work with. I'd like to see them raise it 20 million. I know, well, I don't think it will happen, don't like to be so absolute.

5 this year, 5 next, keep going till we have a George Steinbrenner atmosphere. LINK

The league isn't giving anyone anything. As 24 says, this is a mathematical calculation governed by formulae in the CBA.

On your broader point, I think that a lot of people around here are way too wedded to the idea that "parity" (which isn't really the right word, but it's close enough) is not good entertainment. The salary cap wouldn't be going up if league revenues weren't going up. There is talk that the next TV/multimedia deal could be double the amount of the current deal. I suspect that some of this is due to the recent creation of several new sports TV channels that are bidding against the incumbents (Fox Sports 1, NBC Sports a/k/a Versus, and even that Middle Eastern owned channel that is buying up soccer rights). Just the same, the league seems to be doing just fine.

It is an article of faith around here that the league is better off with super-teams in the big media markets. You would expect that attitude in LA, Boston, Chicago, and New York. But is it really true? The NBA doesn't seem to think so.

We're slowly but surely creeping into the age of markets being irrelavent thanks to the digital age and multimedia. What Adam Silver does here will define him as a Commissioner no doubt.

The cap is increasing for everyone, it does not give the Lakers an advantage, teams are still in competition with each other, overall it takes money out of the owners pockets puts it in the players pockets.

I know, but I didn't choose to respond to that part. I edit my quotes most of the time. If you want a response to that part, then I'll say that we will never have a Steinbrenner atmosphere as long as there is a salary cap, luxury tax, max contracts, and restrictions on free agency. If you mean that salaries will keep getting bigger, you're right. I expect that the owners will have a hard choice to make in a couple years: Do they really want to go to war to force the players to take a smaller piece of the pie, when the public relations backlash would likely be horrendous this time around?

I was really talking about the pipe dream.

I don't think you understand how it works. The league doesn't decide where to set the cap. The CBA decided that as a percentage of revenue.

About 22.4 for 1 player (an additional 507k in cap hold gets added back in for each additional player you split that up among).

I think the encouraging thing about this news is that in two years the cap could be close to $70 mil. If we stick to the pattern of only signing stars to long term contracts we could potentially have enough space to sign a couple big time guys in two years. If we can get Kevin Love next summer for around $20 mil this is what summer 2016 could look like.

Love - $20 mil
Rookie - $5 mil
Cap holds - $5 mil

Total salary commitments $30 mil, which would leave us close to $40 mil to work with. Say Kevin Durant for $21 mil and then f=go for one of the Centers on the market - Noah, Hibbert, Horford,Brook Lopez, Al Jefferson.
that some 2k Cheese !!!
