Terrible. One of my favorite players growing up. Tony was one of the best and smartest hitters in my memory. Cancer sucks. |

One of the best baseball players ever, but even a greater person.
IF YOU CHEW OR IF YOU SMOKE QUIT. YOU KNOW IT'S GONNA KILL YOU SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.
If he didnt crew he would still be here right now. |

Such a good guy. I can't think of a single person who had a cross word to say about him. I grew up in North San Diego County... everybody loved him. Wow...that's too bad. So young. And yes, cancer sucks. _________________ So glad we gave you your flowers while you were here, Kobe. |

Damn, this sucks. We're losing sports icons here in San Diego left and right. First Junior then Jerry Coleman, now Tony Gwynn.
Read a stat that he once batted .403 for a 179 game stretch between mid '93 and '94. One of the greatest hitters ever, and one of the most genuinely nice guys in sports. RIP Tony, you will be missed. |

I am shocked, I had no idea he had cancer. I loved watching him do what he did best, hit the damn baseball. Scary, he is the same age as I am. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

I believe he would have batted 400 if the players hadn't gone on strike. He was batting 394. LINK Quote: | "To this day, I really believe I’d have hit .400," he said to Tom Cushman of San Diego Magazine

Yep. He was hitting .394 110 games in to '94 when the players went on strike. |

Yeah, he was challenging Ted Williams back then.
Anyway, stay away from the chaw. Lesson learned.

To lose Tony Gwynn and Junior Seau in just a few years has left a huge hole in the collective sports hearts of San Diego.
Tony Gwynn was a great guy and a brilliant player, one of the best hitters of all time. _________________ Love, Laker Lanny |

He looked like he was in really poor shape post-retirement, easily pushing 300.

This is so unexpected to me because I remember him playing not that long ago. He was almost the same age as MJ.
I doubt he would have hit .400 though. Too much pressure, and because he was a few points below .400, that means he would have had to hit even better over the final 52 games. He was good enough to do it but I think his chances were far below 50 percent.
Maybe he would have done it if some pitchers started feeding him softballs in the last month, thinking it was good for baseball if he did it. There is a reason why nobody has hit over .400 since World War 2. It's just way too hard. But of course we'll never know because of that strike. |

Not a big baseball stats guy, but is hitting 0.400 comparable to Wilt's 100 point game? Like some may get near it but never reach or surpass it? _________________ “Properly read, the bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived.”
