He has developed into an elite defensive player and can cover multiple positions well. Those type of guys don't grow on trees.
He is a good low post scorer.
He is a very good rebounder
He is a good passer
He can really run the break.
How do you not give him a qualifying offer? How do you trade him?
One could argue he is our best player this year.
All of this is true, but he still doesn't have a reliable Jumper, which I feel is the only barrier to him being a sure fire choice for a new contract. TBH Kuz's emergence has been a problem for Jules, since you have to wonder if he will accept a long term role off the bench behind BI/Kuz/Maybe Nance.
If he keeps putting up 24/7/5 consistently, the Lakers would be very stubborn to trade him, just read what one of the Lakers said, when he plays like last night he is one of the best players in the NBA.

Plug in anyone's name there. If anyone on this team put up those nice numbers consistently, said person would most likely not be traded.
these posts are too short, could somebody write a 20 page thesis on why Julius was great last night? I won't read it, but I'll take comfort in knowing it is here...

i.e. Lopez? Clarkson? If any of these guys are averaging those kind of numbers by the end of the season how can you justify trading them to bring in an aging LBJ? _________________ Not a legend

He's become so effective off the ball (barely isos at all anymore) my ideal line up would actually be to start him and move Ingram to the bench. Fat chance that'll occur, though.
The second section of this is about Randle's great game last night. Amazing work off of the ball.
I love him at the top of the key distributing - that's how the Warriors used Bogut to maximize space/minimize his lack of shooting. And Julius can drive on most centers who come out to try and disrupt his passing lanes.

I just want the Lakers to be in a position where they DO NOT have to renounce his caphold while still being able to sign two guys.
If they can keep his rights, they can play the waiting game with him and possibly score him on a longterm deal for value, somewhere between 40-50 million over four years.
Luke gives some insight here on his frustrations with Randle, and the sort of things they're tying to get from him:
It basically comes down to intensity and focus for Randle. They want him to play "locked in" on a more consistent basis. He has done a MUCH etter job of that this year, but there have still been some lapses. He played with high intensity last night, but he didn't do so in the previous two games before that. It's good to see that his play last night was rewarded with 32 minutes.
Randle has played well enough that you really don't want to let him walk. But it's also tough to justify giving him a large contract to come off the bench. Kuzma is our starting PF of the present and future, and Nance is an effective, economical backup.
The only real opening for Julius is at the center position. I think he's played well enough to deserve a legit audition at starting center. When Nance gets back, maybe rest Lopez for a couple games, and start Randle at the 5. If he's able to be a full time center, then you have to strongly consider passing on Cousins this offseason. Or maybe you use Nance + Hart + future 1st, or something like that, to dump Deng. And basically let Randle play 30-ish minutes per game backing up both frontcourt positions. 28+ minutes would justify the large contract. It could look something like this:
Lonzo
George
Ingram
Kuzma/Randle
Cousins/Randle

Watching Ben Simmons today he really reminded me of Randle and got me thinking that they play the game very similary.. Are we missing something with Randle by forcing him to become more of a perimeter player instead of letting him and encouraging him to play his game? When you watch Simmons its crazy how much he actually has in common with Randle. Leftie, plays a lot of bully ball, always gets into the body of the defender...
Maybe we are not utilizing Randle properly and maybe there is more untapped potential there if we would get him off the leash and try to play him like a point forward, just tell him to bulldozer his way to the rim like Simmons and Giannis do it?
Big difference between the two is that Simmons is longer. However Randle can handle the ball and pass at a really high level. Last few years we have been trying to convert Randle into a perimeter player but maybe the league is either moving away from that a bit or players like Simmons and Giannis have shown that maybe you can succeed in todays game without a jump shot?
While Im happy Randle has developed a jumpshot you have Simmons and Giannis succeeding while playing the same game that is also Randle's original game to put it like that. Do you think he simply cant do what Simmons and Giannis do, either because he lacks length or because his skills as a ballhandler arent as elite?
I mean last few years it seemed like its impossible to succeed without a jump shot but with the emergence of Simmons ans Giannis...maybe the blueprint is now there? They are both the focal points of their team, wonder how Randle would do if we just told him to get out there and play like Simmons and Giannis.
I think it's unfair to compare Randle to 2 of the best non jump shot shooting players in the league. One guy has handles and elite vision, and the other has elite "I can get anywhere I want on the floor in 1 dribble"
Randle is doing what he needs to as Mr. Energy and I don't think he should be something he's not.
