This is becoming a trend for our young guys. Everything they do wrong will be exaggerated beyond belief.

Yeah, Nick was straight garbage in OKC too. Talk about living off a reputation (that he earned in, like, preseason )

He tends to regress in a major way when the season is technically over from a competitive point of view. It just happened way way earlier in the BScott era.

He definitely went back in his progress fro the start of the year. Defense is awful, shooting is the same, effort is the same. He need to be evaluated this summer closely by FO and Luke. He need to change his attitude or he need to be gone this summer. His mind is not really in the games and its easy to see it every single time when he is playing.

That's my point. This wasn't a poor defensive game by Randle. Yet if you came to this thread it would seem like it was. To make sure I wasn't seeing things I just rewatched the game and took notes. Here's a recap of every defensive possession of the game that he was in for:

------FIRST STINT--------------------
#1: Sufficient defense by the Lakers culminating in Nick knocking away the ball away and Randle grabbing the loose ball and heading into offense.
#2: Reasonable defense by everyone. Adams missed a hook shot vs. Black and Randle should have grabbed the rebound but fumbled it out of bounds.
#3: Westbrook isoed on Russell and took a 16 foot jumper which he missed.
#4: Adams scores on Randle in the post. This wasn't bad D though, Randle had a nice challenge but Adams shot a hook over the top of him.
#5: Young ate a hard screen from Adams (who was guarded by Black) which freed up Abrines for an open 3 which he made. Nick looked shaken up.
#6: Westbrook penetrates but Randle cut him off well, no rotation though as Adams cut to the basket and was fed for an easy basket by RW. This was not Randles fault, it was confusion between Black and Russell.
#7: Randle matched up with Westbrook in transition until Russell recovered to him then he shifted out to guard Sabonis at the three point line who Nick had picked up. There some some confusion here though as Young then wasn't sure who to rotate off to, Abrines or Robserson. Roberson did a back cut to the rim and Westbrook fed him right under the basket with Black sticking to Adams and Ingram letting Robserson go through to stick to Abrines. Not sure where to assign blame on this one, but the Thunder got an easy layup.
#8: Not sure on this possession as it happened when they were showing a replay but doesn't look like Randle was involved. By the time the camera was back at the action all you could see was Russell grabbing a rebound adn starting the break. Best guess is an Adams shot with Black defending.
#9: They put Russell and Randle into a pick and roll vs Westbrook and Sabonis. Randle switched onto Westbrook and he had to pass out to Abrines and got it right back, reversed side to Sabonis in the post against Russell, who airballed a jump hook. Rebound by Ingram.
#10: Westbrook against Russell in transition. Randle was back and defending Sabonis at the three point line, Young was back and matched up on Abrines. Good challenge by Russell resulting in a miss and a Randle rebound.
#11: Missed free throw by Ingram and the Thunder ran off it with Russell being slow to get back. Abrines scoredan easy layup off a Roberson pass. Randle was didn't lag on this one, it seems like Russell's mistake.
#12: Westbrook to Adams in transition. Young, Zubac, and Randle all rotated to him but he made a nice floater over Ingram.
#13: Westbrook/Sabonis pick and roll resulted in an alley oop by Roberson with Nick getting caught sleeping.
#14: Abrines misses a three in transition. Randle was back. Roberson gets an offensive board resulting in a three by Abrines.
#15: Randle is called for a non-shooting foul trying to poke the ball away from Sabonis in the post.

No major lapses here.
--------------SECOND STINT-----------
#1: Clarkson ate a hard pick from Gibson, and Randle switched off onto his man who then fed Gibson for a 15 footer. Randle did challenge but was out of position and Clarkson hadn't fully recovered yet resulting in a make. Randle did have a slight delay where it appears he was stuck between backpedeling and rushing out. He could have played it better but this was not a major infraction as he was guarding two players at once while Clarkson recovered from a hard screen.
#2: They went back to the pick and roll involving Randle and Clarkson. Brewer rotated over to help on Gibson and Randle recovered to get into good defensive position but Gibson quickly kicked out for a corner three before Brewer coudl recover with Zubac still in the lane defending Kanter.
#3: They stuck with the Gibson pick and roll. This time it resulted in jumper that was relatively well challenged by Clarkson. Randle seemed willing to give space to Gibson here (wondering if this was the strategy against him) and Clarkson rebounded.
#4: Gibson did a dribble hand off to McDermott who got a step on Brewer off the screen. Randle showed help and then leveled off trying to prevent a pass to Gibson as Brewer came in for a decent but somewhat out of position challenge resulting in a score. I watched this on replay a few times trying to decide if Randle should have stepped in here rather than leveling off Gibson but I think he made the right play. Zubac was also in the lane, and if Randle had rotated with Brewer also still on McDermott Gibson would have had an open look or if Zubac rotated Adams had an easy basket down low.
#5: Adams set an off-ball screen on Deng giving Grant the jumper but he instead attacked Zubac and then fed Adams for an easy bucket. Clarkson rotated but he was behidn Adams. Randle did come to help but late, he probably could have shaded further off Gibson here putting him into a better position. He did get his hands on the ball though after Adams fumbled it. Adams won the scuffle a Randle lost his balance stepping on Adams foot, resulting in an Adams jump hook and one with a Deng foul. I think in this situation Randle you could put blame on Randle here for not having the presence to shift onto Adams more quickly, though this was not a lazy infraction Randle began the play just beneath the free throw line with Adams making his cut at the opposite end of the free throw line. There was a lot of space here as a result of Deng trying to recover from the initial pick.
#6: They once again put Clarkson and Rnadle into the pick and roll. Gibson is setting great screens here but Randle did a good job of containing the ball handler who made a pocket pass to Gibson at the free throw line. Randle was containing the drive and started the play a good 5 feet or more away from Gibson but did give a reasonable challenge with Gibson missing the jumper but the Thunder got the offensive board after Adams tapped it out of Clarksons hand. Randle meanwhile had started running but did make it back to recover. Gibson meanwhile scored an easy one in the post against Zubac. This was well challenged but Gibson was right under the basket.
#7: Randle tips the ball away in transition defense resulting in a steal and a Brewer dunk.
#8: Lakers did a decent job on this possession but Grant made an and one over Zubac and Clarkson.
#9: An off ball screen between Gibson and McDermott on this possession forced Randle to rotate onto McDermott after Russell got hit by another good Gibson screen. He defended it well and McDermott threw it away trying to pass to Gibson. I think Russell got his hand on it but was hard to tell. Randle grabbed the loose ball and got out running.
#10: An interesting set by the Thunder on this one in semi-transition saw Westbrook take a scren from Adams, then from Gibson. Randle rotated properly and had good position on Adams, Gibson wound up with a 15 footer with a hand in his face from Zubac. He missed and Zubac rebounds.
#11: They attempted to throw the ball down low to Gibson in transition but Randle was challenging, Gibson dropped the ball out of bounds and wanted a foul.
#12: Another poor job by the tv crew as you couldn't really see what was happening with the thunder attacking while they were showing a replay. Looks like Russell blocked Abrines shot but Zubac fumbled the rebound right to Grant who had an easy dunk.
#13: Westbrook pushed out fast in transition again and took advantage of Russel and Randle both trying to pick him up in position to feed to Abrines who was well ahead of Deng with an open lane but it wasn't a great pass and Abrines fumbled it and Randle grabbed the loose ball after he tried to save it. On this possession I think Randle should have recognized that Russell was back and defended the lane rather than helping on Westbrook. He didnt see Abrines though and Abrines snuck behind everyone.
#14: Lakers had good transition D on this one but Westbrook tried to force a drive and was rejected
#15: Abrines gave a soft screen on Ingram who wasn't bothered at all but then popped to the three point line and Russell didn't stick with him. He got an open three but missed and Randle rebounds.
#16: Westbrook hoists a three in transition and misses, Russell rebound.
#17: Westbrook tries to outrun everyone and challenges Black on a drive and misses. Russell rebounds.
#18: Adams misses a hook in the post against Black. Randle rebounds.
#19: Transitioned straight into a Westbrook and Adams screen with Westbrook misses a challenged jumped against Black. Team rebound in the scramble after the play.

There were a couple of possessions where Randle could have defended it better as noted above. Nothing major though.
------------THIRD STINT-----------------

#1: Interesting start here. Randle did hustle back on D, and Westbrook pushed fast getting the ball to Adams eventually, who gave back to Sabonis who drove on Black. Randle did step in his path which resulted in some daylight for Adams 8 feet from the basket and Sabonis then setting a moving screen against both Randle and Black, completely taking them out of the play for a second but Adams didn't recognize it. But he did make a jump hook over Black.
#2: Randle played well off Sabonis (which I'm not sure I like) but that put him into good position to challenge Adams who got the ball off a Westbrook pick and roll. Randle and Black both challenged and Adams missed an 9 or 10 footer, Randle rebounded.
#3: Adams posted up Black, Russell came down to help and Adams kicked out to Westbrook who swung to Abrines for a challenged three against Ingram that he swished. (Abrines played very well).
#4: Russell and Ingram get a hand on an Abrines drive but he gets the ball out to Westbrook who puts Russell and Randle into a pick and roll with Sabonis resulting in an open 17 footer. Randle was a good 5 feet away when Sabonis got the ball (as he was stepping into Westbrook's path who had a step on Russell) but did challenge. Sabonis swished it.
#5: Westbrook finds Abrines for a three pointer in transition. Ingram challenged and Randle was in the paint recovering to Roberson but Abrines made a contested three. Ingram played this well but he was trying to guard two players at once which got Abrines the space.
#6: Roberson misses a challenged layup in transition against Black.
#7: They double Adams in the post and he kicks to Sabonis who cut across the lane for a 13 footer. Randle was guarding Westbrook underneath the basket, and Ingram was guarding Roberson above the free throw line. Sabonis slipped into the open space but Randle made a nice challenge here from long range causing an awful brick. Randle grabbed the rebound.
#8: Westbrook/Sabonis pick and roll against Randle and Young. Russell jumped the passing lane in front of Sabonis and got the steal but Westbrook forced him into a missed layup.
#9: Sabonis handled the ball on the break here and pushed. Randle ran with Russell so was in the back of the pack but he did get back to make a reasonable challenge on an Abrines three which he still swooshed.
#10: They got out and running again, but all five Lakers were back, Randle gave a soft double on Westbrook with Russell while Sabonis and Roberson were still running down court and then when he shifted to cover Sabonis Westbrook hoisted up a three on Russell and missed. But Adams grabbed the board and hit a jump hook over Black.
#11: Westbrook drove by Young and kicked to Adams who missed a jump hook. Roberson got a tip rebound though the scramble while Black and Ingram challeneged Adams and Randle was on the other side of the floor covering Sabonis at range.
#12: Westbrook again forces in transition and this time finds Abrines for a missed corner three with a hand in his face (though slightly out of position) from Russell. Ingram boards.
#13: Westbrook comes down and misses a 15 footer in transition, rebounded by Ingram.
#14: Sabonis misses an open three (semi challenge from Black but he was far from him at the start), Young rebounds. The Lakers were all back here with one Thunder player not yet over half court but the Thunder at this point were just pushing and firing and trying to score in transition on each and every possession.
#15: Sabonis gives a hand off scren on Russell to Roberson. Randle stuck to Sabonis who slid to teh post, and Roberson curled to the rim. Reasonable challenge by Russell and Black but resulted in a made layup for Roberson. It looked like they defended as they wanted to (with Randle not hedging and Russell slipping between Randle and Sabonis to recover).
#16: Randle cut off Westbrook in transition and wound up matched up one on one. He defended it well but Westbrook swung a quick pass to Sabonis who had 5 feet of space between himself and Ingram who was cheating over on Westbrook. Made three.
#17: Westbrook/Kanter pick and roll against Clarkson and Zubac. Defended reasonably well but Kanter still got a challenged layup (by Zubac) when he slipped into the space between Randle (who was near the free throw line guarding Sabonis beyond the line) and Zubac that he missed. Randle rebounds.
#18: They went back to the Westbrook/Kanter vs. Clarkson/Zubac pick and roll. The Lakers rotated well here but Abrines got a three from the space of Russell's rotation, he missed, but Kanter grabbed the offensive board then got his shot blocked by Zubac.
#19: Despite the Lakers being back Westbrook again forced in transition, getting a step on Clarkson and to the basket. Randle rotated well and challenged but Westbrook fed off to Sabonis when he did for the dunk and one.
#20: Westbrook attempts an alley oop to McDermott but Zubac got his hands on the ball and the ball went out of bounds.

No real infractions in a nine minute stint in the third.
-------FOURTH STINT---------

#1: Westbrook/Adams picka nd roll against Clarkson and Randle was defended well forcing a kick out to McDermott at the three point line. He gets a step baseline on Russell but Randle is there to help and give a nice challenge, forcing a miss. Randle rebounds.
#2: Same play as above but this time Westbrook stops for a 17 footer. Randle had given him space but does challenge reasonably well, shot missed short. Clarkson rebounds.
#3: Westbrook posts up on Clarkson but has his shot blocked by Nance on help.
#4: Gibson posts up Nance but Clarkson knocks the ball away on a double team. Westbrook misses a contested (by Clarkson) screen in the scramble. Nance rebounds.
#5: Westbrook/Adams vs. Clarkson/Randle on the pick and roll again. Well defended initially but Adams finds Roberson for three who had about 10 feet of space when Ingram rotated. Russell stayed glued to Abrines. Made three.
#6: Clarkson handles Westbrook well in semi transition and he had to give it up and get ti back from Adams. Randle then doubles him but Clarkson doesn't seal baseline and Westbrook gets by him. Nance rotated well here and Westbrook gives it up to Gibson who Russell rotated to pick up. Nance recovers and gets a piece of the shot but Adams get the offensive rebound over Randles back and feeds to Westbrook for a layup.
#7: Randle grabs Westbrooks jersey on the fast break resulting in ball out of bounds.
#8: Westbrook makes a tough 16 footer one on one vs. Clarkson.
#9: Randle trips Roberson who was coming off a curl resulting in ball out of bounds.
#10: Sabonis sneaks in off a screen while Nance and Clarkson double Westbrook and finds himself weide open with 10 feet on the nearest defenders under the basket (Randle and Russell). Randle was late in rotating here, waiting until the pass was coming to slide over while sticking to Adams on the other side of the basket. He challenged and Sabonis took advantage with an up and under layup.
#11: Roberson dunk in transition with no Lakers back.
#12: Westbrook isolates against Clarkson and Randle cheats over. Westbrook ships it to Sabonis who does a nice shot fake to get Randle into the air, but Nance was in his path. He kicks out to Roberson for an easy made three though as Ingram also clogged the lane on help.
#13: Missed three on one of those possessions where the Thunder had to shoot and the game was basically already over.

There were two possessions in the fourth where I think Randle could have defended better, as noted above. Overall though he had a decent showing defensively. So my point is that people who are looking to be critical of his game when he has a bad game automatically go to he didn't play any defense as a crutch. There was no lack of effort.

So I'm guessing you didn't see the game? He was neither of those things.

Bad offensive game. But passive and invisible, he was not.

I saw the game, but I saw not much from Julius. I'm the last one bashing our young guys, but for this game criticism has to be allowed. It was a bad game - and not only offensive. He wasn't able to compete against any of the spurs bigs (even David Lee).

He was hiding a bit today. With his speed, he has to drive to the rim in every game to finish or to kick out. He looked a bit afraid to blow by defenders.

Maybe you looked more intensively at JR, I didn't notice much of him in this one.

Wow, he played that bad today?

I see Randle being traded on draft day for a high first round pick.

E.g. Randle to bucks for the 13th pick and their 2nd rounder.
I wonder how high in the draft we could get if we packaged the Houston 1st rounder with Randle...If we could get high enough to draft Malik Monk or Jonathan Isaac I'd pull the trigger.

Ideally though I'd rather get a young vet in return.

If everything goes as expected between now and the draft, I would expect both Monk and Isaac to be drafted in the top 14 and thus not available for a Randle + Houston pick package.

If Houston has some bad luck and/or something negative happens with Monk or Isaac, then I will adjust my expectations.

Julious has a lot of truble socring against length like the spurs have. Needs to work on that right hand and the jumper it will help.

Except some of his best games this year have come against lengthy front courts.

He seems to have made adjustments in his approach to length from last year, such as using his footwork to go around defenders rather than go over the top.

#14: Abrines misses a three in transition. Randle was back. Roberson gets an offensive board resulting in a three by Abrines.

I just felt that this was worth repeating🏀

Or one could do both. And still see the same old complaints by the same old posters here.

This is becoming a trend for our young guys. Everything they do wrong will be exaggerated beyond belief.

And the same people are hoping we suck enough to get another young player that will suffer the same fate. It is what it is, no one has to take a basketball competency test to post here

It happens on both sides. There have also been a lot of posts in here saying he would dominate the league and is on pace to be better than Draymond and so on.

That is also true, and a big negative for being able to post things on a message board, everyone wants to be the first with their hot take. I prefer patience and waiting to see how these young players develop.

anyone think Julius is more confused by the offense now? More guys like Ingram are actually moving hard off picks and moving towards the basket, which they weren't really doing before so now Julius is doing that, "where do I go" thing again.

Someone debunking an often cited myth makes them a players agent?

The last time Julius faced the SAME front court he had 22 points on 61% shooting, shot 85% from the line, in addition to having 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

Except some of his best games this year have come against lengthy front courts.

He seems to have made adjustments in his approach to length from last year, such as using his footwork to go around defenders rather than go over the top.

Even last year some of his better offensive games came against front courts with length that are known for good defense. It's not that Julius struggles against length, he just struggles sometimes, he's still inconsistent (like all the young guys).

Actually Draymond Green is the one that said he's on pace to be better than Draymond Green.

If we were to trade Randle for a pick, what would be his value?

I just felt that this was worth repeating🏀

Not sure what JC Smith said but I'm gonna have to say he won that argument on pure effort alone.

Decent offensive game. The problem with Julius is that he gives too much on D. He doesn't have any defensive awareness off the ball.

Didn't read either but this kind of dedication has to be respected
