Julius Randle in high school played 3 and 4 and averaged 32.5/22.5 and people said he was a man amongst boys and he won't be able to do that to college players.
He goes to college, is double/triple teamed nearly all of the time, breaks Kevin Love's rebound record and averages a double double. People said he was a man amongst boys, he won't be able to do it to NBA players.
I'm sensing a pattern Hopefully it's a dominant one for Randle. I do know Jabari did not like playing against him. Wiggins and him liked playing against each other and it was always a hard game. Even still Wiggins couldn't defend him. He could help side block him when someone else was defending, but when Randle took it inside Wiggins was moved just like the rest of them, and when Wiggins tried to do it to Randle he was stopped. Randle also when he drew an assignment on Okafor on the few occasions he also overpowered him.
But Wiggins was the only guy in high school that could consistently hang with Randle and Wiggins will be a freaking stud as long as he works hard and remains healthy and why Minni has one of the highest upside teams in the league.
There is a reason Randle was considered the best high school player in the country for a while. His combination of strength, speed, size and ability is the kind you just don't see from power forwards unless they are 6'5 like Barkley was from a ball handling standpoint.
Julius is 6'9 however and about as big as Barkley was right now at 19. That is why he demanded double and triple teams in college.
I hope it translates in the NBA.
When it comes down to it, the Lakers fan in me hopes that it will and if Randle becomes as good in the NBA where he requires double and triple teams I will be a happy happy person as long as we have a deep team around him to make teams pay for it.
Heck even if Randle just became a 17/9/4 guy I'd still be happy.
But letting go of that side and just looking at how the Lakers are going to use him. I'm not doubting that the Lakers will play him at the 3 at points and stretches.
Look at this game
The way he was/is able to play with Thompkins tells me all I need to know about if he'll be able to play with Kelly. They can play together particularly if Randle is playing the decoy.
Don't be surprised if the Lakers run a
Steve Nash
Nick Young
Julius Randle
Ryan Kelly
Ed Davis

^ that game shows you another route that Randle's career could take. He could take the path of improving to be a 17/9/7assist half court Point-Forward. I could see him focusing on improving this skillset if his jumper never comes around. He could still potentially play at an all star caliber.
Many fans insist that his career depends on him developing a jumper; failing to realize how versatile he is.
(and by the way, he was also considered the best college player in the country for a portion of the season. Early in the college season, Magic and i believe Byron, said they'd take him #1)

Very much so. The top 3 was Wiggins, Parker Randle in terms of readiness, particularly cause Embiid was injured and even still wasn't NBA ready, it was his potential and the fact he was a center that actually had a post game that people are and should be high on him. But if he can't stay healthy it won't matter.
Also when it comes to Jabari, I've loved watching Jabari Parker play and really did feel the Carmelo comparisons, though he was very athletic in high school particularly when his weight was lower and he wasn't injured.
But the more I watch Jabari the less I feel Carmelo and the more I'm leaning towards a more consistent Rudy Gay. Which isn't a bad thing either because it means he's more patient than he was before and a more willing passer.
I was curious about how much Byron Scott has played his rookies so far in his coaching career to get an idea of how much Randle will play. I understand they are all different situations with teams with varying depth, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless.
Rookies of note:
Stephen Jackson started 40 games and was 7th on the team in total minutes.
Kenyon Martin played 68 games and started all of them, and was third in total minutes.
Richard Jefferson started 9 games and was 5th in total minutes.
J.R. Smith started 56 games and was 4th in total minutes.
Chris Paul played and started 78 games while leading the team in total minutes.
Darren Collison started 37 games and was 3rd in total minutes.
Marcus Thornton started 17 games and was 5th in total minutes.
Kyrie Irving played in and started 51 games. He was 3rd in total min.
Tristan Thompson played in 60 games, starting in 25. Was 4th in total min.
Dion Waiters played in 61 games, starting 48 of them. He was 5th in total minutes.
So not only is Byron okay with playing rookies, he has relied on them quite a bit throughout his coaching career.

Wow. Thanks. Good to know. I think at a certain point that Randle will force his hand. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals

So many good right handed moves. And against bigger guys . He's going to be a beast. I was at that game. When he got the ball it was electric! Reminded me of when kobe gets the ball.. Laker fans are going to love this kid!

If that earlier quote about Randle from BScott is true. Randle may already be forcing it. Good thing training camp starts tomorrow. Can't wait!

Imo, Julius compares favorably to Karl Malone. Karl was drafted in the mid teens, even behind # 2 pick, Benoit Benjamin, because he was raw. Karl couldn't shoot outside, was a poor free thrower, and didn't jump high enough to win a dunk contest. After 1 year of college, Julius is a better shooter, ball handler, can rebound as well, and has the speed to run the floor like Malone. Malone used his body to clear space to finish around the rim and Julius seems to have that same talent. We don't know all of what he can do since he faced zones and double teams a lot, but I expect some really good things when he plays with Kobe, Young, and others who spread the floor and/or run fast breaks.

So much talk of this JR kid. Joining the military has really kept me out of the loop these past years. Too excited to see what this kid is about! _________________

I was an atheist until I saw Kobe step onto a basketball court.
The 2nd most significant thing that I saw tonight, aside from Kobe looking freaking awesome, was seeing what Randle's defensive role is. He showed tremendous potential as a pick & roll defender, which makes sense because of his quick feet. Minimizes his issues with length as well. He got lost a couple of times on the recovery, but all in all, he showed promise. Very encouraged.
I still see a lot of Blake Griffin in him. He needs to get stronger and get a solid NBA body. _________________ "Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships."
