Ok Laker fans, lets keep things in its proper perspective. The teams recent struggle has us fans questioning everything and everybody but lets take an unemotional view of the situation.

Magic and Rob have been on the job for under a year, and so far they are doing a great job. How you may ask, lets take a look:

The first real test was to start to create cap space for future Free Agency. Right off the back, they found a way to dump one of toxic contracts the Mitch and Jim signed, Mozgov. Yes, it cost us a young player but, it had to be done.

The next test was the NBA draft.... and they crushed it. We started out with possibly just a late first round pick, with a little luck and smart trades they were able to get 4 picks in the draft. Lonzo, despite his early struggles was the right pick and will be the future PG for years to come. and with 2 late first round picks, they found 2 gems in Kuzma and Hart. Hart looks like a solid , 2 way rotation player, and Kuzma looks like a future All Star. the Jury is till out on Thomas Bryant

The next test was Free Agency. unlike the last regime. they did rush out and throw money at anybody that would take it. Magic said from the beginning that they were gonna, in essence punt on Free Agency because there was no Franchise changing players worth the money. And like an OG, he stuck to that. Signing a big, 1 year deal for KCP and excepting back in the Mozgov/Russell deal Brook Lopez who is a huge expiring deal.

Magic and Rob have done, so far, exactly what they said that they were gonna do. They created cap space, drafted good, young players and have set themselves up to be big players in Free Agency. We cant allow the team struggles to cloud these facts. In less than a year, they have done a wonderful job. I know that Magic knows this game and have faith that he knows how to put a team together. When you combine that with Rob's experience with players, contracts, and the business side of basketball, we are in good hands. Keep the faith, we are on our way back up, and the improvement is be rapid and soon we wont even remember this down time.

Thanks for the recap, Magic. Rob would have exceeded the 20,000 character limit J/k

I'm good with the draft picks. Iím skeptical of the mozgov deal until I see the other part of it (2 max FAs) this trade deadline/summer.

Itís encouraging that they compete and are in almost every game, however they desperately need to pile up some Ws. Mavs, Suns, etc. are winning some now so no excuses tbh.

Summer of 2018 has always been the real test. If we get 2 max level worthy guys, then they have accomplished their mission. Until then, too soon to be celebrating or lamenting.

The only gaff and its major, are the public comments that have been a distraction for the players. The unnecessary pressure on Zo and BI. The tampering. The distraction for the vets who arenít in the future plans. The annointing of Luke as their only asset Jerry West and Dr Buss wouldíve never have done this.

The moves I agree with.

A lot of the things that you mention are not abnormal. The issue is that we live in a different era and everything because of the worldwide media coverage and social media, things are magnified. Combine that with the Lakers being.... the Lakers, things are REALLY magnified. Jerry West and Dr. Buss never had to deal with this type of microscope. Magic is learning.

The players issues, are what they are. The Lakers creating cap space and talking about free agency, was by nature gonna create an uneasiness. That's business though. No way around that. They have to get over it. Play hard, and you may be apart of this future team. Sulk and pout and when its time to make a decision, you just made that decision easy.

Sure but not immediately. If they kept Russel and he had a breakout 20+ppg year next to Lonzo(which was expected) they couldíve gotten more than Hart/Bryant and cap filler(Mozgov would probably be as affective as Lopez next to Lonzo). Think if they traded Russell and Mozgov for cap filler and a top 10 pick in this draft at the deadline or next summer. I think that wouldíve been very possible. They rushed into that move because Byron didnít like our best young prospect and was in Magicís ear about it.

They did do really well in the draft, Iíll give you that.

I guess you don't look at the game record at all. You may notice
that the Lakers are doing as bad or worse than last year. They gave away Lou, Swaggy, DLO their best shooters.
Now they lament they can't hit 3 pointers and free throws.
Hey, you traded away your best shooters!!!!!!

And to have a 2 free agent max plan with a bad loosing record
is crazy.
Why not have a doable plan?
Keep your assets and don't throw it away for la la land in the
future.
REad this Magic and rOB PLEASE.

Yep. This has always been my issue, too. Not that I don't understand the reasoning but that it did not have to be done immediately. Also, that it seemed motivated by a personal vendetta.

Rob and Magic did okay, but Magic's big mouth couldn't shut up, patting himself on the back and hyped up what he and Rob had done equated to the Lakers being "new showtime" with playoff aspirations this season, and Lonzo Ball being not just ROY this year but also future HOF, and still also get 2 max free agents next summer.

Who do you think was rushing in to take on Mozgov contract? We are in that same situation with Deng. We cant move him. The Lakers made the right deal, at the right time. They had to get rid of at least 1 of them. they did. You have to remember, these contracts are poison. I can't believe we found someone to take Mozgov deal, and you think Magic should have just said, nah, we will wait. Really?

The Summer of 2018 will be the real test. The FO has stated their intent is to sign 2 max FA. Weíll see if their plan and dream scenario comes to fruition.

Magic's interview last month sounded like they're already back peddling on that, saying they may just sign 1 FA and wait for 2019.

Ok, lets look at the other possibility. What if Russell sulked at having his starting point position taken and given to a rookie, did play as well and lowered his trade value? Then what?

There are things that are going on behind the scenes that we don't know about. Magic sees and are around these players daily. The know their personalities and who could or would cause a problem in the locker room. we have to give front offices the benefit of the doubt. We don't know these players, they do.

I don't know if its back peddling. Just being realistic. Lets say, they think that 3 possible free agents are worth max money and could put us over the top, but they were only able to sign 1. Should they now over pay for a guy that's not worth it, just to stick with what they said or, should they save a max spot for next summer, to get a guy that they think is worth it.

We have to make up our minds as fans. When Mitch and Jim frivolously spent money on gusy that wasn't worth it, we got mad. Now that Magic is saying that they wont do that, and if that means we will only sign 1 max player, we again have a problem with that.

I look at it different. If we make the playoffs next season, i say success. What good is getting big money players if we don't make the playoffs. That's the next step...get back in the playoffs.

I am not as enamored as others with the 2 max plan in the first place but even if they pull it off there are a lot of questions to be answered before it can be considered a success or failure.

Who are the 2 max? How do they fit together and with the roster? At what cost financially and asset wise to make it happen? What other additions or subtractions will be made around the 2 max? Does the team come together or struggle with chemistry?

FO signing 2 max is just the beginning point. No guarantees it suddenly fixes all issues or turns the team into a consistent contender. Could just as easily be a fiasco. One that emphasizes the inexperience of the FO, HC and players and the lack of fit or patience by the 2 max players.

2 max makes headlines but it will be interesting to see if it actually results in significant wins. Even if they pull it off!

No, the message they are sending out is "play hard but you might still not be part of this future team because we need to sign max players". I guess you have no idea how this disrupts a team's chemistry. Only a dysfunctional organisation would allow the manager to create this kind of culture.

Agreed. Magic also not completely backtracking and saying no max free agents in 2018 pretty much locks in Paul George being a Laker this off-season. If we miss out on LeBron and Cousins, we can give Nerlens Noel a one-year make good $18 million dollar contract to be a stop-gap.

PG- Lonzo / Vet
SG - George / Hart
SF - Ingram / Vet(Bring back Swaggy?)
PF- Kuzma / Nance
C - Noel / Zubac / Bryant

I can roll with that.

Ok, so what's the alternative? Magic nor Rob has ever said that any of the young guys are being traded. The media are the ones saying that. They are the ones trying to read the tea leaves and putting all of this speculation out there. Its just unfortunate that the players are listening to the outside noise instead of just going out and playing.

They have to get over it. Play hard, and you may be apart of this future team. Sulk and pout and when its time to make a decision, you just made that decision easy.

No, the message they are sending out is "play hard but you might still not be part of this future team because we need to sign max players". I guess you have no idea how this disrupts a team's chemistry. Only a dysfunctional organisation would allow the manager to create this kind of culture.

JR was playing well in preseason then got benched. Then got 15 mpg even when they were shorthanded and rookie Kuz was playing 40mpg. If he "was in the plans" then he'd be starting all season.

Magic & Co. developed a strategy and they've stuck to it. Right now, it's too early for me to be praising or criticizing them.

If they get one or two max free agents, their Mosgov dump will have achieved its goal. Depending on what happens after that, and what Russell turns into, that might look like a smart or dumb move in the future.

Right now, their draft picks look solid, but I am wary of every young player on the roster being declared a "future all-star" by someone. Drafts that look like huge successes after 30 games might not look like huge successes after two years. Heck, two years ago people were going on about the "future all stars" we had in Russell and Randle, and how Anthony Brown was going to be a great rotation player.

So I am content to see how things play out, but I am not ready to pop any champagne corks. This type of post is the equivalent of jumping up and yelling, "Rah! Rah! Go team!"

If we donít win more games than last season then this season is a failure. But hype rules.

I disagree with the premise of this being a "Rah, Rah" post. Its more about giving credit where credit is due. Everybody is freaking and out and have completely lost focus on the bigger picture. Rob and Magic deserve the proper amount of time to undo a lot of mistakes and to institute their own plan before receiving ridicule. I think so far, they have earned that much.
