PostPosted: Fri Jul 04, 2014 10:45 pm    Post subject: Who is your internet/TV provider?

I'm shopping for a TV provider and it is so opaque with 2 year contracts for some (DirecTV) and changing rates for all after 1-year.

In addition, Time Warner Sportsnet is not offered by some providers.
Finally, not all providers are available in the area so it's quite a confusing search.

It seems like the minimum one needs to spend for a good sports package that includes timewarner is ~70 bucks a month just for TV with the rate hiking after 1-year.

Does anyone have any advice on this?

You have a choice most likely between 1 local cable company, 2 satellite providers (Dish Network and Directv) and if you are lucky your local phone company offers TV service as well (AT&T Uverse). With DirectV and AT&T merging, you will probably only have the choice of your local cable company or the satellite companies...so in essence you don't have much of a choice.

Verizon FIOS or Google Fiber would be what most internet users would like if they had a choice. Unfortunately most are stuck with the choice of either DSL or bandwidth capped cable internet.

these companies are all so shady with their pricing.
they all say first 12 months and then jack up the prices after a year to whatever they feel like.

Charter's decent. I have it at home, and it's my college's number one provider, so I deal with their service a lot. Their installation workers are jerks(at least the ones my dad dealt with) though. Our internet sometimes slows down on occasion and our cable gets messed up a bit during rainy weather, but other than that, their service is completely fine.

That's not shady. They disclose everything. You're getting new customer promos for the first year. You'd rather not get the discount?

Apologies if you felt it was hostile. What exactly did I say that rubbed you the wrong way?

I just don't understand how what they do is shady. They disclose everything. That's why I asked if you'd rather have full pricing from the beginning or receive the discount.

Don't take it personal buddy. I'm reading the posts, barely looking at usernames unless it's an odd or particularly unique post.

Actually pricing varies depending on how you speak to customer service. I know it was that way for Directv. You can haggle to get a number of discounts in a calendar year. That being said with all the consolidation that is going on in the industry, I expect those to disappear when there are less providers around.

You don't have to haggle. You can just pay full advertised price if ya like.

Not sure I can really contribute to the discussion that much, but I'm currently with TWC. Had the 10 mb/sec (megabits, not bytes) internet plan and they changed it to 15 mb/sec like a year ago. Just got an email right now, that they're upgrading it for free from 15 mb/sec to 50 mb/sec, with a new modem. That's pretty sweet for a free upgrade. Waiting like an impatient little boy right now for the modem to come in the mail!

Lol I'm sure others already have as fast or faster internet, but going from 1.8 megabytes/sec to 6.25 megabytes/sec is going to be sweet!

No offense taken!

I just felt that the practice of not disclosing the future price is shady.
For instance, DirecTV will tell you what it will cost for the first year but there is no information other than long terms of services on the second year's rate.
Note that they require a contract.

I despise having monthly bills of any kind so I just find this variation in price very annoying.

Also Charter nickels and dimes its customers by adding additional surcharges for each TV, installation, etc.

The entire TV subscription industry is really ripe for some major changes.
For the most part, they enjoy monopoly (for instance, Charter is the only game in town for me as far as fast internet goes) and they employ lobbyists to engage in anti-competitive practices and are against innovations such as internet streaming.

how much is TW charging for 100mbps download speed?

Charter charges 100 a month with 200 dollar activation fee.

Thats because pricing for cable/satellite changes year to year depending on the carriage fees. Thats why you can never get stable pricing and why they won't tell you the price next year. They could raise the rates by so and so dollars because this particular network demanded we raise the carriage fees from so and so to so and so.
