Looks like 11 players to me that are fixed, most likely additions? Steve Nash (not getting dumped), Xavier Henry, Tompkins, Woolridge Jr. or Rodrique Beabouis.

Unfortunately, the chances of him winning it all this year is practically nil anyways.

The much more likely scenario is, if Duncan gets his 6th ring, does Duncan go above Kobe?

I think so. He's the best ever in his position. Been a solid anchor for that franchise since his was drafted. Multiple MVPs, finals MVPs, and the most fundamentally sound big man in the last 2 decades.

Come on now... let the man have his wet dream for the duration of this thread.
I'm just saying don't sleep on the Mamba.

Jello, this is a five man game, Kobe proved pre Pau he could not drag a mediocre team to win. An older, post injury Kobe will not either; brain storm if you will but it's not happening.

I don't think this team is as mediocre as some of you are saying. Definitely not pre-pau bad.

People forget how good that 2007-2008 team was before Pau. If memory serves me correct, they were something like 28-13 or so. I know that Bynum had gone down and would be basically lost for the season, but that team with a healthy Bynum, before Pau, was a contender.

It would cement his legacy as a top 3 player. He would pass Magic as the all time greatest Laker. Unfortunately, it's not gonna happen.

What? First off, he didn't win with a bunch of scrubs. Kenny Smith and Sam Casell were solid and they had serviceable forwards. He also got to play alongside Ralph Sampson and didn't win with him. He also won in a year when the real best team took a year off. Hakeem was great but he wasn't legendary in his day. For some reason he seems to get better and better the more time passes. It seems he gets better and guys like Bill Russel get worse. Go figure.

Unquestionably the greatest Laker ever, and arguably the greatest player ever (the argument against coming from Stat geeks aka ESPN).

What, pray tell, are 8 players that you can rank in front of Kobe?

I would say all of these players can be re-arranged in any order in the top 5 or so spots, depending on your take on era-to-era comparisons and player positions.

MJ
Wilt
Kareem
Shaq
Magic
Bird
Russell
Kobe
Duncan

If LeBron continues to make finals appearances, put up his current stats, and win another title + FMVP with Cleveland I'd say he'd join the conversation.

He is generally above these guys..

Bird? 3, Shaq? 4, Duncan? Never repeated or three-peated

All those other guys, depending who you talk to, will be GOAT.

Most of the bball people rate Kobe, Shaq, TD (in various different orders) as the 7,8,9 best players of all time..
so, yeah - I think it'd be a pretty safe bet that TD winning another ring probably nails down that 7th spot for him and Kobe/Shaq are then contesting 8/9th

and this laker team isnt a bunch of scrubs.

name me the SCRUBS on this team?
sacre.....
.....
exatly

the rest of the guy are solid guys

swaggy p is as good as kenny or mario elie, if xavier pans out he could actually be solid like mario elie.solid defender, pretty good consistent scorer that coudl hit the 3 when needed.

cassell was ultra clutch. a combination of Lin and nash could = sam
a young horry = julius randle. then we still have boozer.

kobe is hakeem.

so yes if kobe wins with this team. he will be hakeem. basically winning with a non 2nd or 3rd star cast. he should therefore go down as the GOAT no questions asked.

I think some are downplaying what a feat it would be to win with this team. Anything is possible, but this isn't a team built to win now.

I have him as the third best Laker ever and I don't think a championship would change that, but if they win, it will probably be in a much more spectacular fashion than I can imagine and I might reconsider after actually experiencing it. Or it could be the opposite, where Kobe reduces his role and enables other players to do what we didn't know they were capable of.

As of now, I rate them:

Jordan
Russell
Magic
Kareem
Bird
Wilt
...and then fill it out with Duncan, Kobe, Shaquille and Hakeem in some order.

Staying true to the topic of winning rings, and not being based on his talent, Kobe would rank among the top 15 players with 6 rings or more in the NBA.
His ranking at number 10 would tie him with the following players:
Jordan 6
Pippen 6
Kareem 6
Bob Cousy 6

Robert Horry has 7 rings and no one seems to ever mention his name with the other more talented players on this list, but he still and always will have 7 rings. We could have the age old discussion of they played in different era's or the one where is was 15 teams in the league in that era, but the NBA history book doesn't rank greatness based on talent, only on how many fingers those rings can cover. So does that mean Bill Russell has a toe ring

Shaq and Kobe's two Finals losses changed everything for them.

What separates Jordan from everyone else, that not many people talk about enough is 6-0. two 3-peats. 6 Finals MVPs. The reason why Joe Montana always has the upper hand over the Elways, Unitas' and brady's, is 4-0 in the Super Bowl, 3 mvps and 11 TDs and 0 INTS.

Imagine if Shaq had gone 6-0 in the finals. He would have won championships with 3 different teams and more than likely have 5 Finals MVPs.

Had Kobe gone 7-0 in the finals, 2 3-peats, 4 out of 5 titles. He would be a 3 time Finals MVP, would have beaten the Celtics twice and would have pushed the Lakers to the top spot in titles.

In Shaq and Kobe's two finals losses each, their teams were the favorite. So you cant say it was a Lebron in 2007 thing or AI in 2001.

I have said many times, had Shaq won all 6 of his finals appearances, I felt he would be #1 all time at the center position. No worse than two with Kareem being #1.

Kobe, would have undoubtedly be #2 AT WORST and in the top 5 had he gone 7-0.
