Gary Payton, a candidate for Bucks coaching staff, is also a candidate for Lakers staff under likely new head coach Byron Scott. |

I would welcome it. GP was a defensive beast. Good man to show the young guys the angles.
Caveat: he isn't the most eloquent individual. _________________ "I don’t give a [expletive] what you say. Loved his tenacity on Defense. He'll get guys working hard on D. With all due respect to the "no-name" coaches we had on our staff last year, we need a few of these ex-NBA guys on our coaching staff. Having a solid coaching staff not only helps on the court, but their player relations could help attract FAs. |

Just thinking how good prime GP would be in today's driving guard game, and shutting down, truly shutting down the star PGs of today. GP vs. CP3 - cmon. Westbrook would still be a handful, until GP got into his head sometime in the 2nd quarter. But mainly thinking of his offensive game. |

Gary seems too Type A, in your face for an assistant. We'll see how it plays out if it comes to fruition. |

I'm not saying I'm for or against him, but just a general remark: when have great defensive players ever been great defensive coaches? It's very rare.
In fact, the great defensive coaches were usually lousy defenders as players.
Not saying this is with everyone, and I don't know how Payton coaches, but just saying that we shouldn't go around shouting our team will have "great defense!" just because a coach was a great defender when he was a player. _________________ Kobe |

Reminds me of Tom Thibodeau, he wasn't exactly known as a great defender during his playing days. |

Why can't Gary Payton be the Head Coach instead? |

It could work. Payton was Tim Grgurich's prized pupil. It famously only took GP a couple of all star break sessions to turn Kobe into a 1st defensive team player after Kobe sought him out for help. So maybe coaching comes natural to him. His dad Mr. Mean is a coach too. |

Michael Cooper was a Defensive Player Of The Year and he was Laker assistant for a few years. How did they do defensively?

Best defensive PG in NBA history. That should auto-qualify him for the coaching staff! DO IT MITCH! |

Have assistant coaches ever been thrown out of games for talking (bleep) to opposing players? _________________ *sighs*
