Report: Longtime referee Dick Bavetta retiring

The NBA was reportedly trying to nudge Dick Bavetta into retirement in 2010.

But the referee – famous for his race with Charles Barkley – returned and continued his stories career.

Four years later, Bavetta is apparently ready to hang ‘em up.

Ailene Voisin of The Sacramento Bee:

It’s fitting Bavetta reffed four years longer than the league wanted. It just helps preserve my memory him as stubborn.

But, for better or worse, he was also a character, and if he’s retiring, the NBA loses part of its personality.

Steve Javie and Dan Crawford. 2 refs I couldn't stand.

I like most most of the refs ... except for BENNETT SALVATORE ... D-Bag... I hate him with a vengeance.

One of the refs for what most neutral sports fans say was the worst refereed playoff game in the history of the league.

Substitute "uneducated" for "neutral," and you'd be a little closer to being correct.

Don't forget that they still had Game 7 at home....where all they really had to do was hit their freethrows. Couldn't do it.

I found a lot of Tim Donaghys book to be unbelievable but I believed every word he said about Dick Bavetta. The game is better without him, who cares what team "should" win, call it even and let one team earn it.

Is this about Donaghy's claim that games reffed by Bavetta that seemed like blowouts were intentionally kept close?

Peja is airballing a wide open corner 3 as we speak.

Christie is practicing shooting at the backboard relentlessly as well.

Agreed. There is not one official out there who is even average. It's ridiculous.

I think that one was probably a bigger issue with Vegas point spreads but if any of those teams actually came back to win because of his help, that's a problem. The bigger issue was extending playoff series by taking a game from the rich and giving it to the poor so the NBA gets a longer series and more revenue. That Peter Pan nonsense has no place in sports. Teams in the playoffs are too evenly matched for one game to be a far decider of a series, that's why series don't last one game.

The good ones are the ones who you've never heard of because you never notice them. It means they're invisible just like they're supposed to be. The ones that love the attention always find themselves in controversy, I wonder why.

Another stern ref he was corrupt as the others, just because he was a skinny old man does not make him a good ref. Good riddance.
