This Ebola outbreak is getting scary. Over 600 deaths and wide spread infection in the affected areas in Africa. Now on CNN they said they are flying 2 infected Americans to Georgia for treatment. Obama is meeting with some African leaders next week at the White House which may or may not be cancelled. With the air travel these days this could get out of hand. Scary times!!

Yeah, why are they bringing these people to the U.S.? I mean, I honestly don't know what treatments entail, but I would imagine it would be better to leave them where they are and bring treatment to them if possible.

Gonna sprinkle them with that anthrax and bubonic plague the CDC misplaced and set them free in the subways and airports

**just looked up some info on those mishaps and found this article on a city in China where man died of bubonic plague on July 16th..whoa..

Scary. It's caused by consuming or being exposed to infected wild animals such as fruit bats which are common in Africa. Garcinia kola (African bitter kola) have been used to treat Ebola and HIV which is more prevalent in that part of the world as well.

Well any vaccine or cure requires a huge profit by the pharmaceutical companies. Treating a few hundreds is not profitable.

There are organizations that fund this research. For example, the new potential Malaria vaccine was funded in large part by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.

I don't think transporting infected Americans will cause an outbreak, more so, Obama meeting African leaders... come on, you do know how Ebola is transmitted?

There are a handful strains of Ebola with varying degrees of death rates after infection. Supposedly Ebola can not be transferred in an airborne manner. What if it mutates to a point in which it does?

Time to start stockpiling food and ammunition!

The strain with the highest mortality rate is responsible for the current outbreak.

Ebola isn't airborne. Not really a threat in our society unless you make a habit out of touching other people's fecal matter. The spread of Ebola is more a testament to the sad state of sanitary systems in the third world than Ebola as a threat in the States.

So poop is the only way it is spread?

Quote:
When an infection does occur in humans, there are several ways in which the virus can be transmitted to others. These include:

direct contact with the blood or secretions of an infected person
exposure to objects (such as needles) that have been contaminated with infected secretions

The viruses that cause Ebola HF are often spread through families and friends because they come in close contact with infectious secretions when caring for ill persons.

During outbreaks of Ebola HF, the disease can spread quickly within health care settings (such as a clinic or hospital). Exposure to ebolaviruses can occur in health care settings where hospital staff are not wearing appropriate protective equipment, such as masks, gowns, and gloves.

Proper cleaning and disposal of instruments, such as needles and syringes, is also important. If instruments are not disposable, they must be sterilized before being used again. Without adequate sterilization of the instruments, virus transmission can continue and amplify an outbreak.

Don't touch the baskets at the grocery store without first wiping it down. I heard that 72% of those baskets have fecal matter on them. Disgusting. We have hand sanitizer at our front door. You ain't stepping off the mat unless you took one hit.

Public or not, it certainly involves the exchange of bodily fluids. But, please, keep it private.

This was written by a friend of mine who is a Ph.D. bioinformatics researcher, who is in Africa right now doing field research:

Ebola spreads like wildfire in Africa BECAUSE it is Africa. They are poor, they have very good reason to avoid interactions with government officials, they are extremely undereducated as a whole and their organizational funding and capacity is not "negligible" but pretty Damn close in many areas. This is even the main reason given for the out of control nature of the outbreak. They are poorly staffed/equipped to sufficiently deal with the SCALE not the NATURE of the situation.

Almost none of these apply to the US or most developed nations. I'm not saying that no one could die from Ebola here. I'm saying that achieving anything near the SCALE of west Africa's problem would be next to impossible here.

Patient Zero would be identified within hours or days of the first suspected case. Zero's contacts within the incubation period identified and contained within hours to days after that. Zero's contacts' contacts identified and contained or observed as well. This will be much easier than in Africa even without the fact that we don't have to go deep into the bush to find them. We simply have MANY MANY more people who can perform this work and we as a society are MUCH easier to find (for better and worse).

Yes people will be scared and will do stupid things. Yes it may cause entire neighborhoods to be shutdown/cut off from entering leaving their areas. But we are equipped to do this and believe it or not many cities already have protocols written for this type of thing and have even 'war gamed' it.

It's not that everyone will be fine. It's that it won't be able to burn anywhere near as hot or long as it burns in Africa.
