This may be the blow that ends the student-athlete myth. Colleges can now pay a few thousand dollars per year in addition to the scholarship. This will be appeals, but I read the ruling, and it looks fairly solid.

That should separate the famous athletes from the wrestlers who labor just as hard.

I can see this ruling going both ways...
Some of the bigger programs will end up paying their players a bigger share of the profits...
Meanwhile, the smaller schools might just end up dissolving their programs if the financials don't line up.

Couldn't the whole "student-athlete" thing be solved by simply making any potential scholarship recipient have a 2.5 GPA in high school and have to maintain it for a minimum of 3 years in college? That would a). support the claim that the universities care about their education and b). makes sure they stay in school for at least 3 years.

Don't know about the latter. The problem is keeping your top players from leaving. A multimillion dollar contract still outweighs a 50K scholarship.

Good idea. Only the 1% that are pro quality that weren't really in it for schooling will go straight to the big time.

The rest of the college players should have a requirement. The big risk they take giving a scholarship and soon a stipend should be reciprocated in a higher requirement in return for the school.

Doesn't this already happen in other scholarships?

Bye.

Or more to the point, the people who generate revenue versus the ones who don't. You don't get paid on effort in any walk of life.
