There appears to be some clarity on how Byron Scott will fill out his coaching staff.
Mark Madsen is expected to stay on Byron Scott’s coaching staff, according to league sources, after spending the past year as a player development coach for former Lakers coach Mike Do’Antoni and an associate head coach with the team’s Las Vegas Summer League team. Madsen also played a heavy role with the Lakers’ drafting efforts, attending both the NBA pre-draft combine and participating in various draft workouts. Madsen had played nine years in the NBA and was on the Lakers’ 2001 and 2002 championship teams. It is not currently clear what Madsen’s title will be under Scott.
Scott is also expected to add veteran assistant Jim Eyen to his staff, according to league sources. Eyen has spent 23 years as an NBA assistant coach in various capacities, most recently with the Sacramento Kings (2009-2013). Such stops also included the Lakers (1989-92), Clippers (1988-89, 2003-09), Milwaukee Bucks (1992-96) and Portland Trail Blazers (1997-2001). Eyen also had scouting jobs with the New York Knicks (1996-97, 2003), was an assistant coach at University of California at Santa Barbara (1984-88) and served as a consultant for professional teams in the Netherlands, Germany and Japan. Eyen is also the son-in-law of Bill Bertka, the Lakers’ current special assistant and basketball consultant to general manager Mitch Kupchak.
ESPN Los Angeles first reported the Lakers’ likelihood to add Eyen to Scott’s staff.
Scott will likely have four people on his coaching staff. Possibilities include Lakers assistant Johnny Davis and player development Larry Lewis, both of whom are still under contract. It is widely expected that Scott’s son, Thomas, will join his staff after coaching with the D-Fenders, the Lakers’ Development League affiliate. |

Well, if Scott is going to have 4 assistants I hope it doesn't end up being Mad Dog, Davis, Lewis, and Scott Jr. The quote in the article implies that as the possibilities.
Not that any one person listed is bad but we need someone with proven coaching experience as well. |

Ramona's twitter:
@ramonashelburne · 5h
Rest of Scott's staff still being finalized, should be done soon. You've heard the rest of the names.
In reply to someone asking about Horry and Payton:
Ramona Shelburne @ramonashelburne 5h
@sagarkunga not those
So my guess is:
Jim Eyen, Mark Madsen, Paul Pressey, Johnny Davis, Thomas Scott
Development Coach: Larry Lewis
Video Coordinator: Tom Bialaszewski
That's a lot of assistants, but I'm just assuming that the "four" that they talked about didn't include all the holdovers. Eyen, Pressey, and Davis have loads of experience. I would think Madsen has the most upside.

Just because they're great players doesn't mean they'll be good coaches. |

I think it might be opposite actually. The "bad" players have to practice fundamentals more cause theyre not physically gifted and they'd be better at teaching players. Idk just my opinion |

I'm not saying we should have gotten Cooper,Gp, Kareem.
But I am saying that this seems kinda weak.
It's basically our assistant coaches from last year - Dan Dantoni + Thomas scott.
Seems very weak to me _________________ Kobe |

You're assuming that great players make the best assistant coaches. I don't think that's true at all. Coaching and playing are different roles altogether. |

Not sure if Cooper or Kareem were even considered. Have to remember that these guys are Byron's best friends. They were his equals or higher on the court. Not sure how the dynamic would go if he was suddenly their boss... |

the point is that we dont have jack in terms of players that FAs want to play with, so atleast we could have established an Aura of great coaches to attract them. Dwight went to Rockets because of the promise of McHale knowing what to do with a big seeing that he was a big himself.
Not only did we bust in the player acquisitions, we potentially have busted the coaching staff as well.
As of today, the Clippers have every single reason anyone would want to play in LA. the Lakers has lost every single reason they used to have. A truck load of rings in the past, we know doesnt seem to work anymore. Especially with another potential lottery bound season. |

McHale being a big had nothing to do with Howard's decision to go to the Rockets. He has had the opportunity to work with the best bigs on the planet and he has either failed to utilize anything they taught him (Olajuwan) or simply didn't bother even working with them in the first place (Kareem). |
