Definitely sad to hear this but Saturday Morning cartoon has been "dead" for more than 5 years now. All the shows have been nothing but repeats anyway. =\

Heyday of teen n twenties toons as well: Beavis, Ren/Stimpy, etc. MTV had 4 I can recall in the mid 90s: Beavis/Butthead, Aeon Flux, The Head (guy w/ a giant head with a creature in it), and The Maxx (purple colored hero, vaguely recall it).

In California in the 80's, it was channels 11 and 13 that would show cartoons from 2:30 until 5:30. The peak was Thundercats/Voltron/Robotech/GI Joe/Transformers/He-Man/M.A.S.K. mid-80s epoch of kids cartoons. That was followed up by 30 minutes of news and would segue-way into Three's Company. Good times!

I was only into TF Gen 1 and Yo, Joe. Still have my 1st series set of Garbage Pail Kids too. Those were my Laker gms of yesteryear. I used to be inundated with trade requests just like I am now.

Hell (bleep) yeah! The toys for those shows were cheese money! I personally can brag and say that I had the pleasure of owning at least one from each show. I even had the Castle Grayskull....trap door and all...was the envy of my block, yo.

Remember the green slime from the He-Man toys? I had a bunch of jars of that stuff. I tended to like any obnoxious toy. I had a slew of those plastic siren whistles that were all over the place back then, they used to sell em at 7/11. They had a moving turbine thingamabob that made them change pitch, had kind of a Piccolo Pete sound. My folks hated those with a passion. http://www.centurynovelty.com/catImages/116-154_large.jpg

My favorite Transformer was Shockwave. That was one of the higher end ones. My brother had Prime. We had a few of the jets and various smalls. Had Devastator, a couple Insecticons. The triple changers were good too. What a cash cow that franchise was, 30 yrs on.

I remember one time after school-- my younger brother and I were watching cartoons (I think it was Animaniacs) and the programming was interrupted to show a high speed pursuit. We watched as the driver led the police on a chase on some fwy and then tried to light some kind of bomb or something INSIDE his vehicle. That didn't work out too well and he ended up stopping in the middle of the freeway. I think he had a dog inside with him that ran off as he parked.

The guy gets out of the truck and lays a blanket down on the road that says something about HMO's. You can see he has some kind of agenda and at that moment I realized it was going to end badly. He is yelling at the cops who have their guns drawn and he pulls out a rifle from his truck. He takes the rifle to the center median and props it up with the barrel facing the sky. Mind you, the camera's are showing this from a helicopter and the clarity is pretty damn good.

He says a couple last things and reaches down to depress the trigger and BAM.... his head explodes. The cameras pulled away and my brother and I were left in shock. That's the day TV cartoons REALLY died. For me at least.
JK. But man, that was awful. We were hesitant to watch after school cartoons after that....

Yeah, that was pretty notorious. Probably 1998, that's what I recall. I saw an extended clip of that years ago. I think every drop of blood that guy had in his body exited his head, the stream went across an entire lane. The most interesting thing was the paramedics off in the distance. There were a few of them casually shootin the sh, smilin/laffin, unfazed by the bloody mess next to em. If you're in a very difficult job long enough, it becomes "normal" to you.

Ever since I had my son six months ago, I have been comparing stuff like this and Seasame Street to how it was when I was a kid in the 80s.

Its a whole different world.

I was talking about this with my wife when I went and downloaded old school seasame street stuff and it happened to have all these old PSAs and commercials bundled with it.

Remember when they used to have preview shows for the new fall Saturday morning cartoons and other shows like the Friday before or a week before they premiered?

Anyway, one of the other things they had bundled with it were all the ABC PSAs and most importantly Schoolhouse Rock.

I loved that as a kid. Truly learned from it back then.

Will show my son those when he's old enough.

Bye.

You never had any (bleep) clue what time or even which Saturday it would air. But every now and then when you randomly ran into it at 1:30 in the morning it was almost as wonderful as finding a descrambled porn channel.

I remember when the WWF used to have a weekend afternoon show....this was before our family got cable. I believed it aired on FOX at the time. I remember they used to bring out the worst jobbers in the world for those shows, but damn compared to RAW these days, it was way more entertaining.

Ah yeah, early 90's. Still quality stuff going on. I was in HS at that point but still watched every one of the above.

Dude, other than the Lakers, those WWF weekend telecasts were a reason for my whole massive family to be gathered around our 19" TV.

Yup, remember this to this day. He started to freak after his dog burned in the vehicle (you could see it trying to get out). After that, when he pulled the trigger, you could see part of his scalp floating in the wind. I think it was after that that the news from then on decided to always pull the camera wide during the ends of pursuits. Remember my dad turning the tv off as fast as possible because of it.

Oye...just looked it up and watched it again....different camera angle but man, I can see why that memory stuck with me 16 years later. You think you're aware when you're 16 years old but looking back at the memory of it, I was a kid who had no idea what just happened.

Hahaha got to meet and hang out with him at his comedy roast a couple months ago. He told me he loved me after I told him the story about how we bought our first VCR from Circuit City then drove straight to Video Town and rented Wrestle Mania 1. Got it all on my video with my phone. Also kicked it with Mr. Belding from SBTB the same night.

Yup. Brooklyn Brawler the king of the jobbers. 1-2-3 kid the one cheap guy jobber who actually turned into something. That's why Saturday Night Main Event was so amazing because the cheap guys were minimal and it was filled with good matches and even ended with a main event. Ahhhhh, how could I forget. I watched that religiously. My mom said when I was about 3 years old, I would wake up at like 6 or 7am every morning, find my way to the living room and was able to turn on the tv and find the right channel to watch it.

Luckily some of the streaming sites have some of the old stuff around. I had my 2 year old niece addicted to He-man.

One show I vividly remember was Bobby's World. It was always on the television when I was getting ready for school in the mornings.

I think the 80s were the last era where those older cartoons like Popeye, Felix, Heckle and Jeckle, Tom and Jerry, the Warner Bros cartoons, etc, were heavily re-runned. Early-mid 80s maybe.
