Was going to say Rocky 5 as a dumb joke but I can't bring myself to ever say anything positive about it.

The Shining. Not horror movies, per se, I like most 80s flicks. A lot of them have a hokey, comedic element, accidental or intentional. Most King adaptations are inherently enjoyable.

Interesting to note that King doesn't like Kubrick's Shining https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=uZr1gaAOin4#t=38

King even wrote a TV version of it in 1997 that I haven't seen, but I've heard it's pretty terrible.

I thought King did a good job with helming "The Stand" and "It" but was limited by broadcast TV standards and FX budgets. "Rose Red" wasn't very good to me because the book it was based wasn't that good to begin with. "The Shining" suffered from poor casting (Steven Weber as Jack) and having to live up to the high standards set by Kubrick's version. "Under the Dome" suffers from just bad writing and trying to turn a story that can be told in a few episodes into a series.

To get back on topic though, I watched "Frankenstein's Army" a few months ago and found it surprisingly good and scary to boot. It walks a thin line between monster movie and the torture porn genre I despise but somehow they made it work.

I've heard so many good things about the "The Conjuring". I tried watching it but didn't get past the first 10-15 minutes. I'll give it another shot since it's the spooky time of year but this demon possession genre of horror movies has just been so overdone the past few years.

Another creepy one that will have you going "What the bleep" throughout the movie is Honeymoon. It's a recent one starring the redheaded Wildling from Game of Thrones.

1984 NBA Finals

Original Halloween
Friday the 13th 2-4, 6. Just a big Jason Voorhees fan.
Original Elm Street
Christine
The Exorcist
The Original Omen

I really do love the classics especial Halloween. Just the thought of a dude across the street from ya crib and he's standing there staring at it. Then he walks towards it.

I knew I'd see The Shining a few times in here. Confession: I've yet to watch it in it's entirety but I am making a point to finally sit down and see the whole movie. American Werewolf in London is also on my list, partially because Arclight Presents is having screenings and also a friend really really enjoys that movie and he has good taste in movies.

I think most people like The Shining because of the Kubrick effect more than the King novel. The movie apparently is quite different from the novel in parts. There's a rumor that King wasn't a fan of that adaptation, though I've never seen or heard him discuss it. King has a hokey comedy style and is heavily influenced by pop culture. I remember him on Conan years ago talking about horror films he likes, he said he will watch any and every one he comes across. The movies that he had creative control or influence over definitely show that hokey humor and simple plots that he makes interesting with his great ability to paint a picture in minute detail. He's in some of them. His Jordy Verrill character in Creepshow (82) is the best example (a Jim Bob style redneck turns into a weed because he touched some "meet-e-er schhidt!"). Silver Bullet is full of his small town drunkard caricatures too.

Forgot to give a shout out to Cujo earlier. That's a surprisingly gripping movie, again, very simple premise. It's basically one of those movies with one major backdrop and a few lesser ones, like Reservoir Dogs, but with an actual dog. A St. Bernard, btw. For some reason everyone remembers it as a Rottie.

American Werewolf is a John Landis movie, so it's got its share of his typical college-age humor with a good bit of gore, and the talents of Rick Baker's makeup, which was groundbreaking at the time, and still beats out crappy CGI. Michael Jackson liked it and hired both of them to do the video for Thriller. I saw David Naughton (the main character) on an old ep of 25K Pyramid. He got a category on things associated with wolves. He said, "I WAS one!" He was a good player, btw, won 10K for his partner.

[edit] = I just talked on King's take on Kubrick's adaptation and apparently Jello's Jigglin schooled me on the same thing a page back.

Honorable Mentions: Gremlins 1 & 2, The House of the Devil, Bride of Frankenstein, Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, Little Shop of Horrors (1986), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Evil Dead series, Halloween (1987), Eraserhead, The Mist, Psycho (1960), Alien

Always liked Gremlins. Saw it when it came out. That was done by Joe Dante, who directed the The Howling 1. He used gimmicks and actors from that in Gremz, including Dick Miller, one of those instantly recognizable cameo actors from the 80s. Because Dante was a horror film guy, their first draft was much more violent, to the point where it was definitely not a kiddie movie. Example, in the first script, head Gremlin Stripe cut off Billy's mom's head and rolled it down the stairs, haha. That woulda been a good version. As it was, they still were concerned that it was too violent. The Grems launching Mrs. Deagle out of her motorized staircase chair, etc. Deagle was "Kiss my grits!" Flo, btw. You either instantly recognize that phrase or you've never heard of the show Alice.

Apparently, Landis, Dante, and Spielberg were pals back then, presumably why Steven let Dante direct his Gremz project. Anyway, those 3 and George Miller, of Mad Max fame, collabo'd on the Twilight Zone: The Movie project. Speilberg and Landis, the two biggies, produced the lamest bits and Dante and Miller's were the saving graces of the movie. Not only that, but Landis got himself and Steven in hot water when his hectic and dangerous decisions wound up decapitating Vic Morrow and 2 child actors at 2 am. They both got sued and Landis was lucky to avoid manslaughter. I gotta think that strained their friendship.

The Making Of video that was included in the special features of the DVD is great too. Great stuff. It's too bad that idea didn't occur to the bored daughters of directors in other great films so there'd be content that you hadn't seen a thousand times. They used the "Heeeere's Johnny!" scene in the movie with some before and after content. I'm guessing that was a 1-take scene because there's only one door to bust up and it had REDRUM written on it from a previous scene. Jack comes down from his hotel room passing Shelley, Stanley, and all the people buzzing around him and they go to scene and the camera keeps rolling a little bit after the cut. Needless to say, Jack is the man. He had the superstar persona whether the camera was rolling or not, charismatic from the moment he rolled outta bed. It also shows Shelley Duvall in all her dramatic glory. She admits liking attention and being jelly of how everyone fawns on Jack. She stages a fainting episode to get people to notice her. Stanley yells at her toward the end for screwing up a take while they had to wait around in the snow. There's a sweet scene with Scatman who cries when questioned about Danny, who brought back memories of his son as a child. Just re-watched Cuckoo's Nest the other day. I miss Scatman. Danny was a clever littler bugger. Jack brought him a shirt that said CHILD STAR.
