Damn, just this weekend i was playing some cream for a young employee looking for some older, more serious stuff to add to his collection. Cream's version of crossroads got me into blues. Politician is my fave Cream song besides the basics. SWLABR and Born Under A Bad Sign are good. Those Were The Days is good, but it's like listening to Stairway. I have to feel like hearing it again in full else I'll turn the channel. Same with Sunshine and I Feel Free. I've maxed out on their big hits. Not saturated with White Room yet, good descriptive, but open ended lyrics that make you picture what they're talking about, reminds me of House Of The Rising Sun by The Animals. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

I used to play electric bass back in my youthful days (late 1980's to mid 1990's). Saw some great bass players including Stanley Clarke, Jeff Berlin, Paul McCartney, John Entwistle, etc. I had to pleasure of seeing Jack Bruce I think in 1992 or 1993 when Out of Time came out. I believe it was the Palace in Hollywood.
It was an especially interesting night because it was the first time playing with Ginger Baker after Ginger had recently discussed his 30 year battle with Heroin addiction. He played the second half of the show. The funny part of the show is before Ginger came on, people in the crowd were making fun of him because, frankly, he looked like a corpse.
Needless to say, Ginger Baker was the best drummer I had ever seen, or at least close to that after that night. That includes Neal Peart, Stewart Copeland, Vinnie Coliuta, Bill Bruford, etc.
For Jack Bruce, he was flawless that night and I remember his Warwick fretless being so loud that he would hit notes and my pants would shake from the vibration of the sound. True story. He loved to be heard and frankly if you could play and sing like him, you would too.
Based on the tributes I have read from Paul Stanley to Flea to Tony Iommi, to Eric Clapton, he was regarded as a pioneer.
RIP Jack. You kicked ass with the four string, amigo.
One of a kind, indeed. |
