0-5 Start… Good news is the Lakers won’t lose too many more games over the next few days. They don’t play until Sunday.

Somewhere during the second quarter tonight against the Suns and around when Carlos Boozer returned for Ryan Kelly (who played his first minutes of the season), the Lakers lost this game. The Suns developed their biggest lead of the night, and the Lakers were never able to dig their way out of it, falling 112-106.

It’s difficult to reel teams in when you can’t get stops. They came within a point and the game was in the balance, but down the stretch the Lakers struggled to defend the screen roll.

Kobe scored 39 on 37 shots. Jeremy Lin had 18 points. Jordan Hill had 15 and 15.

“Just as easily as we lost five in a row, we can win five in a row,” Kobe said, trying to sound positive despite still simmering from the loss.

At halftime, the press got to talk with Julius Randle. Laker fans are still simmering from that injury.

“I’m not down, upset,” Randle said. “I’ve had my share of tears and frustration and everything, but I’m over that. Just motivated.”

Randle said it felt like someone kicked him when he went up and when he came down he knew it was broken.

“There really wasn’t any pain until I got on the x-ray table. It was more shock, upset because as soon as I did it, I knew what it was, and I told Gary Vitti, I broke my leg.”

The 0-5 start would be so much better if we were watching Julius on the court.

Kobe -- -- A lot of shots tonight. He took his usual and then the bench’s, too. “I felt he battled all night long,” Scott said. With fewer games this week, Scott ran Kobe one some longer stints, playing all of the first quarter and all of the second half. He was Kobe and Nick Young tonight. He missed a lot of chippies around the rim and was a little irked at some no calls. There were a couple of shots tonight that he’s normally automatic on when open in the paint that just didn’t fall. That probably frustrated him, too. On top of that, he also had some FT issues. Scary moment: He jumped over the first row in the crowd and came up a little slow, stretching his wheels before returning to the court. Makes you nervous seeing him do that stuff. That looked like it took a little wind out of his sails there for a few minutes. Hopefully, everything is all right. He pushed through it and didn’t seem to think about it or show any effects the rest of the game. After the game a reporter suggested he was hobbling. Kobe said it was from sitting in the ice bucket. A couple odd stats tonight, the 37 shots with just 1 assist, and the 44 minutes with no fouls. Randle on Kobe: “He was one of the main people to really get me out of my pity party.” Randle said Kobe texted a lot that night. James Worthy also called Randle that night. The Stats: He scored 39 points on 14-37 shots (3-7 from three, 8-12 from the line) to go with 9 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 44 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He missed a three after pumping once. He missed a pull-up from 18 feet out working off the screen. He hit Lin curling with a bounce pass for the layup. He missed a bank on the break. He sank a short pull-up in the lane off the split play. He sank a pull-up at the top of the key. He drained a wing three off the split play. He missed a wing three form the other side, off as soon as it left his hands. Nice challenge on one end, he pushed it out and couldn’t finish over a crowd. He was held in the backcourt on an inbounds pass for instant FTs, he made both. He stutter stepped to put a defender on his heels and hit the pull-up at the FT line. He gave up a layup on iso on the other end. He missed a wing jumper. He sank a three straight away. He was blocked on a drive. He probed the paint and drew FTs, he made one. He probed off a screen and scored a layup over a big. He drew more FTs, getting fouled on a reach, he made just one again. He missed a wing jumper, layup the other way. He had 18 points on 6-14 FTs. Second Half: He missed a short jumper in the lane. He missed a reverse in transition, but Hill cleaned it up. He pushed it up in transition, changed directions, and threw up an And-1 over his head backwards and off the glass, he missed the FT. He attacked the paint after taking a pass off a screen, drew the D and missed the layup (got hit in the body with no call), but Hill slammed it down. He missed a step-through in the paint, got it back and drew FTs, he made just one again. He missed a layup in transition. He missed a jumper, got it back and threw it away. He attacked a crowd and missed, griped to the refs. He drew FTs in transition a few seconds later, he made both. He missed an easy one-hander in the paint badly after getting an offensive board, those are normally automatic. He iso’d on a two-for-one sequence and hit a short turnaround in the lane. He scored a layup in transition. He missed a three next time down. He attacked to his left in a crowd and couldn’t finish. He sank the 18-footer out of a timeout, coming off the little brush screen into a jumper. He popped out on the wing next time down, took a pass and hit the jumper. He missed another jumper. He attacked next time down and scored an And-1 layup after getting his man on his hip, he made the FT. He was called for a travel on a ball fake pass off, not sure about that one. He missed a bank after probing. He missed a layup in transition. He probed off the high screen and hit the step-back wing jumper. He sank a huge three with 1 minute left to cut it to 2. He attacked and missed a drive out of a timeout, that will kill them. Yep, three by the Suns on the other end was the nail in the coffin. He missed a wing three on an inbounds.

Lin -- -- Aggressive from the start, Lin said he needs to play that way every night. A lot of Kobe/Lin split action in this one. As mentioned, this is an easy way that the two of them can both be threats on the same play. Late in the game we got into an awkward set when we went small and Wes was the post man on that play. Just ass-backwards by the Lakers, as usual. Put Hill over there, use Wes to space the floor weakside. Good job in the fourth by Lin to manufacture some FTs from the line. That nearly pushed the Lakers over the top. He was still too indecisive offensively, however, and it made for some awkward moments. “We were in attack mode for most of the game,” Scott said. Well, Kobe’s always in attack mode. We need to get Lin up there with more consistency. Better game, though, in that regard tonight. Kobe said after the game that they need to figure out some things to help Jeremy attack easier. Our two man D down the stretch needs to improve. “They went to some high pick and roll stuff and we weren’t able to get stops we wanted.” The Stats: He scored 18 points on 4-8 shooting (1-2 from three, 9-10 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 2 turnovers and 5 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He attacked and was blocked at the rim (should have finished with his other hand). He attacked the paint and dumped it off to Boozer for the easy one. Nice challenge in transition to get a stop. He sank a corner three on an inbounds pass. He came off the weakside screen, curled into the lane, took the bounce pass and scored the layup. Aggressive attack off the high screen, stopped on a dime, pumped Bledsoe in the air to pick up his second foul, he made one FT. He attacked to his right and scored a layup, but they gave it right back up in transition a few seconds later. Out of control on a drive (his man was in the restricted circle, but Lin was so out of control on a tripping no call that it just looked bad), charge. He attacked the paint, drew the D and dumped it off to Boozer for the layup. He picked up his third foul and had to sit. Second Half: He dribbled a ball off his foot, unforced error, layup the other way. He sank a 19-footer off the split play next time down. He missed a sideline three off the split play. He worked the two-man game with Boozer to set Carlos up for a jumper. He drew FTs on the attack, he made both. He attacked the paint to his left and drew FTs on a sliding bigman, he made both. He thought he had a good block in transition on D, but the refs called a foul. He attacked with speed off the Kobe screen to drew more FTs, he made both. He got undercut badly on a long defensive board on the other end to earn more FTs, he made both to cut it to 1. Not close on a turnaround on the baseline with 3 minutes left. He bricked badly, airballing on a busted offensive sequence with under 2 minutes left (he was completely trying to defer to Kobe on that one, otherwise he had a chance to be aggressive earlier in the shotclock) thankfully, Hill cleaned up that airball.

Hill -- -- His jumper wasn’t there in this one from the start. So Hill battled the glass for the garbage points, giving the Lakers a number of second chances with the 9 offensive boards. “I was just trying to be a hard-nosed player out there,” Hill said, coming away with 15 points and 15 boards. The Lakers have three players right now offensively: Kobe, Lin and Hill. Hopefully, Kelly and Davis can be consistent contributors, as well. Defensively, Hill had a few nice moments with some swats under the hoop. The Lakers couldn’t get stops when they needed them, however. Twice down the stretch Hill fouled Bledsoe as he had to pick him up and challenge the drive. Wish we could have trapped or something on those as we were losing that matchup. It cost us in crunch time. “Our bigs just didn’t do a good job containing those guys,” Scott said. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 4-10 shooting (7-9 from the line) to go with 15 boards (9 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He missed a baseline jumper. Great job securing the board, giving it up and running the floor hard to get it back and he drew FTs on the dunk attempt, he missed both. He missed an open elbow jumper. He iso’d in the post, attacked left, spun, up-faked and drew FTS, he made both. He crashed off the Boozer attack, grabbed the board and was fouled, he made both FTs. He was picked from behind on the perimeter, dunk the other way. Second Half: He follow tipped in a Kobe miss in transition. He cleaned up the Kobe dribble penetration for a dunk. He missed an 18-footer straight away. He grabbed a missed jumper and fed Boozer for the layup. Great help D rotation on the other end to reject a layup. He iso’d in the post, lost the big on an up-and-under for the And-1, he made the FT. He grabbed a Lin airball and dunked it in to beat the shotclock. He grabbed a Kobe miss and earned FTs, he made both. He missed a long jumper.

Boozer -- -- He sucked some life out of the team in the second quarter. He was inefficient offensively and his usual weak self on D. It was a bad combo and it allowed the Suns to go from just a 1-point lead when Kelly was in to a 12-point lead when Boozer replaced him. The Lakers couldn’t dig themselves out of this hole the rest of the game. In the third quarter, he at least brought his offensive game to the table and the Lakers started to make up a little ground. He just can’t be bad on both ends. Otherwise, please sit down. With as bad as our team D is, he probably needs to do that anyway. We’re getting killed. Both Hill and Boozer were blindsided at the top of the arc while holding the ball offensively. Easy scores for the Suns. Just a couple of sloppy little plays like that can kill you in a close game. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-13 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He missed a 16-footer. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Lin. He attacked the paint and drew FTs, he made one. He missed a bank from the left side. He missed a short one-handed bank in the paint. He couldn’t finish another at the rim, but Hill cleaned it up. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Lin. No challenge on a guard layup right in front of him. He was picked from behind out of a timeout for a layup the other way. He took contact in the paint and airballed badly. Second Half: In to Boozer to start the half and he hit a fallaway on iso. He grabbed a loose ball under the hoop, pulled it out and hit the baseline jumper. Nice challenge on a jumper forcing a pass off. He swished the FT jumper off the two-man game with Lin. He missed a baseline turnaround. He iso’d, spun and was blocked.

Johnson -- -- We ran him some at power forward in the fourth quarter as the Suns were small. We actually had some nice stops there as we switched everything on the perimeter during one stretch. We really ran some stupid sets at times on the other end of the floor, not taking advantage of our opportunity to space the floor with that lineup. I’m wishing we had Young to take a good chunk of Wes’s minutes. At least we have Kelly back in the mix to take Boozer’s…hopefully. Don’t want to see too much of Wes at the PF. Some good moments on Dragic when he was defending him. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-4 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He grabbed a board, pushed it up, probed baseline and drew FTs (could have tried to dunk it, but didn’t), he made both. Instead of attacking the rim aggressively in transition, he threw it out of bounds indecisively. He faced up and missed a jumper, way long. He swiped the ball under the hoop. He got backdoored for FTs. Second Half: He missed a three from the top of the arc. He crashed the glass and tapped in the missed Lin three (more please). Wow, looked like he roofed Dragic and blocked him under the hoop, instead FTs.

Kelly -- -- Great to see him back. He came in late in the first for Boozer for the first time this season. Some nice moments defensively on the two-man D when he was in there with Davis. If you remember, Kelly played some excellent team D last year and was very good at challenging shots. His weakness was just not having enough strength as a rookie. Offensively, finally having a stretch four opens the floor for the team. There will be an adjustment period as we’ve run all our sets without that option. Scott limited his minutes severely in this game, I assume to ease him back in. Can’t wait until he’s taking away some of Boozer’s minutes. We should be better defensively. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 1 foul in 7 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He missed a short runner on a nice attack in the lane (Davis got fouled on the putback). He sank the open baseline jumper after Ellington came off Kelly’s pindown screen, took the pass and fed Kelly. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Davis -- -- Good job on the offensive boards. He and Hill had 13 of the Lakers 18. Offensively, we didn’t have a lot of sequences where we set him up. No post ups, few two-man sequences for him. Mostly just garbage plays. I liked the few minutes that he and Kelly were on the floor together with Price defensively. Once you throw Nick in the middle of that bench offensively, that can be a pretty effective unit. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-3 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 9 boards (4 offensive), 2 steals, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He swatted dribble penetration out of bounds on a switch on Dragic. He rushed a spin move and missed the layup. He swatted another shot out of bounds (good D by Kelly to force the Suns into a bad shot to begin with). He grabbed a Kelly missed drive and drew FTs, he missed both. Second Half: He fumbled the ball away on the two-man game. Sloppy moving screen at the end of the quarter and it blew our two-for-one sequence. He battled for a missed three and drew FTs on the putback attempt, he made both. He blocked a shot at the rim and it led to a breakaway layup. He got lucky not to get a 3 second violation as he took the extra pass from Price and scored the layup.

Price -- -- Our PGs need to make the opposing PGs work harder. The Lakers had just 16 assists in this game and Boozer led all players with 4. Not a great game in that regard. At least Lin got Bledsoe into foul trouble early on to take him out of the first half. Really not much of a game on the offensive end from Price. The opposing PGs know we aren’t going to attack with Price, so they can relax quite a bit and save their energy to thrash us on the other end. The Suns bench outscored the Lakers bench 53-17 tonight. “We just have to get better, man. We’ve got to keep moving forward,” Ronnie said. He said the vets have to keep everyone together and focused despite the 0-5 start. He talked about holding guys accountable, but in a positive way. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-4 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 steal and 4 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a three behind a screen. He missed a wing three. He sank a wing three off the Kobe double. Second Half: He swiped a bad cross-court pass. He swung a pass to Ellington for the open three. Extra pass to Davis for the layup under the hoop. He missed a three up against the shotclock.

Clarkson -- -- He came in during the second quarter where Xavier has normally been playing. Very small stint as we played Kobe just about the whole night. Hill filled the Xavier role to perfection with no stats. The Stats: He didn’t shoot or score in 4 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Ellington -- -- Wayne led the bench with 8 points. I liked the brief stretch where we had both he and Kelly on the floor to give us some spacing. A lot of little things didn’t go right for Ellington down the stretch in the fourth. They piled up and killed us. He got tapped on a three, fouled Green on a three and teamed up with Kobe for a turnover on a perimeter pass. Lakers just have too many of those things add up for them to bite them in the end. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-7 shooting (1-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He crossed over, attacked strong and scored the layup. He missed a pull-up from the wing. He sank a wing jumper off the screen. He was stripped in transition. Nice pass to Kelly after Wayne came off the pindown and took a pass for a shot, it led to a better look for Kelly. He missed a baseline pull-up, not getting up on balance on that one. Second Half: He swished a wing three on a swing pass. He drew FTs on a layup attempt in transition, he made one. He fouled Green on a three-point attempt, uggh. He missed a corner three. He got tapped on a wing three. He fumbled a pass out of bounds (probably too far of a pass to begin with by Kobe as it was nearly stolen).

Scott -- -- Aggressive Lin from the start but the Lakers offense still looked so-so out of the gates. The D was better on the other end early on (but had lapses later in the quarter). The Lakers led 10-9 at the midway point… The Lakers trailed 15-11 when Davis came in for Hill… He brought in Ellington and Price for Lin and Wes… Ryan Kelly in, Boozer out Lakers down 4. Good to see Kelly back in the mix… Kobe was in the entire first quarter… The Lakers trailed 26-24 (missing quite a few FTs)… He started the Davis, Kelly, Ellington, Clarkson, Price unit… Good D by the Kelly/Davis combo… He went back with Hill, Kelly, Wes, Kobe and Lin… The Lakers trailed by just 1 when Kelly sat for Boozer… Lin back in for Price to complete the starting lineup with 6:40 left… Defensive rebounding by the first unit leaving a lot to be desired… Boozer on both ends, just horrible… The Lakers trailed 58-46 at the half. Lakers had 8 missed FTs. Bench outscored 30-9, but Scott should have kept more bench in… Better start to the half for Boozer and the Lakers trimmed the lead some… Transition D has been horrible. Obviously, you can’t really defend against the steals and turnovers easily. The Lakers just haven’t even been matching up in transition well. Those are the ones that really hurt. Timeout by Scott after one of those scores… He sat Hill for Davis down 6 (Hill killing it this quarter on the offensive glass and a nice block, as well)… The Lakers trailed 79-75 heading into the fourth… He started a Hill, Davis, Kobe, Ellington, Price unit… A lot of minutes for Kobe… The Lakers started to fall back a little and Scott called a timeout… They trimmed it to 3 when Phoenix went small, so Scott matched by subbing out Davis for Johnson with 7 minutes left. Lakers doing a good job switching everything for once on D… Lin in for Price down 4… Down 4 with 51 seconds left and Scott called timeout. Lakers not getting any stops. They couldn’t score and the Suns hit a three to bury the Lakers for good… The Suns won the break 21-11…

Feels like they are getting closer but not there yet.

0 for 5 start...worst since 1957-58 season? Yuck.

37 shots. Great job Mitchell! Go from Great to Laughingstock of the league within 4 years. I NEVER thought in my wildest dreams it would end up like this.

Thanks, DB!

Is it me or do we really don't utilize the post game at all? I trust there are players who could do that better or more (Davis, Kobe). Does it not fit into Scott's offense?

Somehow I have a growing feeling that Sacre is better than Boozer. Would Sacre-Hill combo be worth to try? Given how Boozer has been no use at all.. do we have anything to lose?

So we have three two-way players on the team right now - Kobe, Lin and Hill. Then some help in D from Davis and Price. Davis should be better used in O and could produce some more. And then some hope in Clarkson and Kelly. Am I missing something? Not much to work with.

Feels like we're getting closer if we're hanging with teams like Phoenix in our current predicament and it coming down to one or two plays at the end, obviously better than we were the last time we played Phoenix.

But it's really.. REALLY games like this where we miss Swaggy.

I don't know if we're any closer. We still can't get any stops when we need them. Offense is still to Kobe-reliant. I certainly don't trust Boozer one bit. He didn't replace Pau. He replaced DFish as the one who clanks layups and can't defend.

37 shots by Kobe? 42% of the team's shots. I understand he's desperate for a win (and Byron as well for playing him 44 minutes), but that's way way too much. Lin was open in the right corner, but Kobe took the tough drive at the end and came up empty. Suns get a 3 to close.

Finally they are dumping most of the two point jumper motion offense and moving toward the Corner Offense (split game) and high pick and roll, and the offense looked better for it. Defensively, still making the same mistakes.

But more importantly, I was screaming at my screen for Byron to take Kobe out of the game immediately after he jumped into the crowd. He was clearly playing out of control and we're lucky he didn't hurt himself. What the HELL is going on out there on the bench?! When they came out of the break and he was still in the game, I turned the game off out of disgust.

Terrible defense. So many layups and buckets in the paint.

Head-scratching turnovers. Terrible game... terrible team?

0-5, wow, to what depths have we sunk?

Always look forward to DB game summaries.

Kobe too emotional and forcing the issue in this game. I agree he played too many minutes. IT and Green too athletic for Lakers though Bledsoe and to a point Dragic were kept in check. Boozer was terrible save a few decent shots in the 3rd.

Get some rest Kobe.

Defense and FT's, missed shots, bad passes. Could have won this game if all those departments were just a tad improved.

Green and Thomas were simply a tough guard and Green is streaky and freakishly athletic - you just have to hope he misses. They pushed the ball up court after every Laker made basket.

Maybe it's time for Scott to tweak the starting lineup?

I'd try Ellington at the SG, move Kobe to SF.

Thanks DB!

No one in this league should ever get 37 shots. More picks for Lin please...

not that it would have mattered but Kobe should have passed out to an open Lin during the last seconds in the game...

as long as the games are 'close' we will lose every clsoe game because kobe demands and wants to be the closer, in which he will be double and tripled.

kobe doesnt seem to either trust anyone or just wants to be the hero to relive his old days of former glory.

love kobe's effort, just not his 4th quarter last minute antics.

I was shocked when I saw Kobe literally jump over a row of fans and land like he did....could have been the season right there....thank god.

Kobe drags this pathetic team through most of the game, then, when we need big buckets or stops, Kobe has nothing left in the tank.....but since his name is Kobe, he's gonna try.

And flame out.

I've said it before. You'll see a lot more of that this year and unfortunately, people are going to start remembering those failed attempts at heroics, and attribute Kobe as non clutch.

This team is complete garbage. Its horrible. This is by far the worst team in years. There's no hope. Tanking is the best option, and i really do hope, that when the season is finally nearing the end, and were fighting off the other tankers, that the organization, makes the right move and tank

But, but the Lakers don't do that, someone will say.

They didn't hang banners for anyone, begging them to stay either

Thanks DB, always can't wait to read. Be honest, Suns should win as they played more like a team.

As long as Kobe is doing what he is doing from the last night. LAL will lose a lot more games.

The way he is playing there is nobody who can get into any flow except himself.

I see his effort on everything which is good for him. I see him try to defense hard and he hustle and go after loose ball. I don't challenge his effort but he is over doing it on the offensive end.

Except the first half from Boozer, I don't think other LAL players are playing really that bad.

Think about when somebody made a shot, got some confidence, got a feel of their shot. And Kobe is taking the next 5, 6 shot before that person can even have a chance to touch the ball on the offence. How can anybody get into any flow.

They keep talking about spacing. There can be 4 people standing outside on the 3 pts line wide open but it won't help anything when everybody know what is going to happen is Kobe going to shot a contested jump shot himself. You would see multiple times when Wes or Jeremy open outside but Kobe have absolutely no intention to pass. There will be space when Kobe actually pass it out. Defender need to chase out, people start to rotate, then there will be space in the middle.

You see PHX would made multiple passes on the perimeter to get open shot. Make it or not they are taking good shot.

With the way Kobe is playing, It does give the team many chances to find a good shot.

A lot of people were happy even losing the Clippers game. Because it was a team effort and everybody contribute, Kobe only took about 15 shots and have 5 or 6 assist. People see light for the team. Play the way they play against the Clippers they will win some games.

The way they play last night, even so close at the end. but I think they will lose a lot more game playing the way they are playing.
