Quote:
However, not everyone is convinced the Lakers are going to mail it in the rest of the year. On Grantland’s Basketball Hour with Bill Simmons and Jalen Rose, ESPN senior writer Ramona Shelburne doesn’t anticipate the Lakers will stand pat and tank this year.

They can’t [tank]. This is Los Angeles, Bill. The Lakers have missed the playoffs six times in their entire history. Since Jerry Buss bought the team, they missed it once. 1993-94 and they missed it last year, and they’re going to miss it again this year. You can’t do this in Los Angeles. This is Hollywood. When you are not relevant, when you are not in the game, people just forget about you. It doesn’t matter if they win a championship, [the Lakers] would rather be 8th and at least have their fans engaged in this season, at least have them watching the games….they have to be relevant. They can not not be relevant.

I wonder what kind of trades the Lakers might look at... to keep us under the water? Deron Williams and Josh Smith aren't really difference makers but they will somewhat Improve the team.

Sounds like Ramona's speculating, as opposed to reporting.

Hope Ramona is wrong. For multiple reasons.

1) I want Mudiay in the draft.

2) It would display a pschyzophrenic thought process by the lakers. We could've improved our roster over the offseason (thomas, stephenson), but the FO chose not to. Now after a horrible start they change their mind? If a couple more games go past we will be the longest of shots to make the playoffs.

Heard the same blah blah from her. I think the team elects to keep max cap space for 2015 and not waste it on rundown hand me downs like DWill.

Pretty much. Saw the piece last night, and she just kept making the analogy to actors that don't have something currently out looking irrelevant. Not that she's wrong, but it was a lot of her own opinion. The only thing remotely insightful was that she hears Jeanie at the games talking about having to keep her father's vision intact and having to make the playoffs.

Exactly. So in the midst of 1-7 the FO suddenly realizes "damn we need to be at least a 9th seed?"

Yeah. The Lakers are already irrelevant and have nothing to trade. She is delusional.

This is borderline insulting. Apparently we're all bandwagoners with short attention spans.

We would need a player like Anthony Davis to change things around, not happening.

We're not making the PO's this year...that's all a pipe dream. Might as well stand pat, keep your pick, and improve your flexibility next summer

The Lakers have no leverage to make any trades the best thing to do right now is tank for the future.

I guess the 18,997 that attend the games didn't get the memo. As long as they have Kobe, they will draw fans.

she's a mouthpiece/sycophant for the FO but hopefully she's wrong. best to bite the pillow and take this season in order to keep the pick

edit: used the word "hopefully" since i would not in the slightest put it past this dream team of a FO to do something absolutely stunted/shortsighted like get rid of even more draft picks

I really hope Ramona is wrong.

I don't mind another tank this season. I like the path of brick by brick I'm seeing. I don't want another Nash, fiasco. We need our draft choices and cap space. Forget the win now.

I also think Ramona's wrong about the Los Angeles, Hollywood attitude. I believe we can stomach some down time to win in the future.

Let the dying corpse of this roster go down. Don't spend a fortune and handicap future teams on this roster. Sure, you may "live" another day or two and get an 11th seed instead of the bottom one, but is it worth it? No.

Let Kobe shoot for the records this year (and make sure he doesn't break down). We live to fight another day. Just don't spend that money today.

I don't think that team last year was attempting to tank. They were hoping Kobe could be back to help propel the team. They didn't liquidate assets either.

Or they had convinced themselves that there was enough talent on the roster at the start of the season to contend for the Playoffs. Not exactly a positive sign if that is what their overall assessment was.

Look at it logically, the only thing we have worth trading are Kobe, Nash and Lin's ending contracts, and Randle. Mitch is boss, but even he couldn't turn that into a contender.
